Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s run through what’s happening in feet and miles per hour.
There’s no surf right now, but the action kicks off on Saturday the 4th of July. Riviere de Galets (Reunion) gets a SSW swell pushing through about 6 ft in the morning, dropping a touch to 5 ft in the afternoon, with a 13-second period. The wind is a cross-shore breeze from the east at 9 mph. It’s not perfect, but it’s rideable for intermediate folks. Water temp is 78°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year. The energy is strong, at 1425 in the morning and 1194 in the afternoon—plenty of punch. Crowds can show up sometimes, but it’s not a dealbreaker.
Sunday the 5th slows down. The swell drops to 4 ft in the morning, and the wind goes cross-onshore. The waves will be messy, not your best bet.
Monday the 6th through Wednesday the 8th is a write-off. Strong winds, onshore and cross-onshore, blowing 20–25 mph. Swell gets up over 8 ft, but it’s just a blown-out mess. This spot is a reef and point break, but with that much wind and size, it’s more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session. Energy is huge—over 2600 at times—but not for us.
Thursday the 9th is tricky. Morning has a 10 ft ESE swell, but it’s too big for this break, and the wind is still cross. It’s for experts only, and even then, risky.
Friday the 10th looks cleaner. A 4 ft SE swell in the morning with a cross-offshore breeze from the ENE at 9 mph. The wave report says “clean”—that’s what you want. Energy is moderate at 539, but shape should be fun. The arvo goes average again.
Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th see a big SSW/SW groundswell, building to 10 ft with 16-second periods. That’s serious long-period energy, perfect for the reef and point. Saturday morning has glassy conditions with only a 3 mph easterly wind—that’s your standout. Energy peaks at 4239 on Sunday morning. This is for experienced surfers only, but if you’re good enough, it’s the best of the two weeks.
From Monday the 13th onward, it gets choppy and cross-onshore with swell holding around 8 ft. Not worth it.
Thursday the 16th is marginal, with a 8 ft ESE swell and a cross breeze. The period is short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be weak and messy.
Friday the 17th brings a new SSW swell with a very long 18-second period in the morning, at 5 ft, building to 7 ft in the afternoon. Energy jumps to 3451. Wind is light cross-onshore, but with that period, the waves will have plenty of push. Still, not clean enough to be a standout.
After that, the last days fade out with onshore winds and lumpy surf.
Your best bet is Saturday the 11th morning—glassy, solid 7 ft SSW groundswell, long 16-second period, strong energy. Sunday the 12th is also big, but the wind gets a little cross-onshore. For confident surfers, that’s the pick.
Rusty.
