The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what's on the table for Riviere de Galets. We’ve got a solid two-week stretch, but don't get too excited for the first few days—it's a bit of a slow burner.

Right now, on Friday the 21st, we're looking at a 4ft SW groundswell with a nice long 14-second period out of the southwest. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the east at 12 mph, so the morning session should be clean enough. The combined energy is in the moderate range (757), but honestly, it's got "marginal" written all over it with the tides not playing ball. The afternoon sees the swell bump up to 5ft but the wind goes cross-shore, introducing a bit of chop, so the window is short.

Saturday the 22nd looks similar. Morning brings a 5ft SW swell and light cross-breeze (6 mph), which gives us clean-ish lines, but again, the tide doesn't do us any favours. Expect small, workable waves that are best for intermediate surfers – not really a standout, but a chance to get wet.

Now, Sunday the 23rd is where it starts to get interesting. The morning swell jumps to 8ft from the SSW, still with that lovely 14-second period. The combined energy is strong at 2515. The wind is light and cross, so it's a bit lumpy but not blown out. For a solid intermediate surfer, this is a good window. Monday the 24th holds that 8ft SSW swell but the period extends to 15 seconds. The energy climbs to 3118, which is getting serious. The wind stays light and cross from the east in the morning. This is the strongest, most consistent wave energy we've seen so far, but the cross wind keeps it from being truly world-class.

The big news is Thursday the 27th. We've got an 8ft SSW groundswell with a 15-second period in the morning, but the wind is cross-onshore. The energy is pumping (3052), but it's messy. However, Thursday afternoon is a standout. The swell hits 10ft from the SSW, period stretches to 16 seconds, and the energy is through the roof at 4213. The wind is still a light cross-onshore, but the tide and wind are finally favourable. This is *big* for a reef and point setup—too big for beginners, this is expert territory all the way. It'll be a powerful, heavy wave with long lines. The period is so long it might be hard to get into the set waves, but when you do, hold on.

From Friday the 28th through to Tuesday the 1st of September, forget it. The swell stays huge (13ft to 16ft) with winds screaming at 25 mph. It's a complete mess—strong cross-offshores and cross-onshore winds will turn the break into a washing machine. This is kite-surfing weather, not paddle-surfing. There's a solid week of poor to dangerous conditions here.

Things finally clean up on Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning session is the best call for the entire outlook. The swell settles to a cleaner 8ft from the east, but the wind goes light cross-offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. The combined energy is moderate (1487), but the conditions are glassy and the direction is right on the money for this break. This is an excellent session for experienced surfers. The water temp is average for the time of year, so a spring suit is fine.

The last call is Saturday the 5th of September. The morning is promising with a 8ft east swell and absolutely glassy conditions—wind is almost nothing from the SSE at 3 mph. The energy is moderate (1702), and it will be clean and lined up. Another great option, but remember, this is almost two weeks out, so keep an eye on the forecast.

Overall, the standout is that Thursday 27th afternoon session for experts, and the Thursday 3rd of September morning for a cleaner, slightly smaller session for the experienced crew. The rest is either underwhelming or pretty grim.

Rusty.
