The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. The surf this week is a bit of a mixed bag for the spot we've got on the radar. There's a waiting game to play before things get exciting.
We're starting with Riviere de Galets, a reef and point break. The water temp is running a touch warmer than normal for the time of year at 77°, so you might be able to get away with a slightly thinner suit than usual.
Sunday the 19th gives us a hint of things to come, but honestly, the conditions are marginal with a light onshore breeze and a weak 3ft swell. The combined energy is weak at 535, so it's not worth paddling out for. That's a day for the repair kit, not your board.
Things start to look up on Monday the 20th. Monday morning is the real standout of the early period. We've got a clean 7ft groundswell out of the SW with a long 15-second period, and the wind is a perfect cross-offshore light breeze. The energy jumps to a moderate 1947, and conditions will be excellent for experienced surfers. That's your best window in the first week, no question. Monday afternoon though, the wind swings cross-on and the swell gets a bit jumbled, so morning is the move.
Tuesday the 21st morning is still clean with that cross-offshore airflow, and a 7ft SSW swell keeps the energy up at 1320. It's a good follow-up session before the wind turns onshore later.
Wednesday the 22nd through to Saturday the 25th is a write-off. The wind is onshore and fresh, building to a fresh breeze on Thursday with lumpy, choppy surf. There's a gap of about 3-4 days with no good recommendations in that stretch. Swell size drops and the quality is poor, so sit this one out.
Now, for the second week, there's some serious size on the horizon, but it comes with a major caveat. Starting Sunday the 26th, the swell really starts to build. Sunday afternoon we're looking at a 10ft S swell, but the combined energy is a strong 1865 and the forecast is clear: the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. It's the same story on Monday the 27th with a massive 12ft S swell and energy hitting a very strong 5089. The wind is light offshore, so it'll be clean, but that's advanced, big-wave territory only, and even then, it's questionable if the break will hold it. The conditions say it's too big, so even though it looks perfect, it's for experts only. That pulse continues through Tuesday and Wednesday with more oversized SW and SSW swells.
We get another huge push on the 31st of July with 12ft SSW swells and energy over 5787, but again, the forecast flags it as too big for the break. Into August 1st, we see 13ft SE swells, but the wind is onshore and messy, so it's a no-go. The setup could be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing given the wind and size, honestly.
So, to sum it up: your one true standout is Monday morning, July 20th at Riviere de Galets. Clean, offshore wind, a solid 7ft SW swell with good period. Get in the water then. Everything else is either blown out, too small, or too big for the spot.
Stay stoked,
Rusty
