The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Riviere de Galets. This is a reef and point setup, so it handles a decent amount of swell, and it’s a fairly consistent spot that works best when the swell comes from the SW.
Right now, the water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year, so no need to dig out the 5/4 just yet.
To be honest, this forecast starts off with a bit of a slow burn. The first week is pretty average. We’ve got a lot of cross-shore wind and some choppy conditions, with the swell just not quite lining up. Most days are scoring as marginal, which means the tide or the wind is messing with the shape. The first real window of opportunity hits on Tuesday the 25th of August. That’s the standout. The morning brings a clean 6ft SSW swell with a 13-second period and a nice light cross-offshore breeze from the east. The combined energy is moderate at 1245, and it’s going to be a proper session. Then Tuesday afternoon gets even better – the wind goes completely glassy, calm, with a 6ft SSW swell. That’s the best you’ll see all forecast. The break likes the SW direction, so this is all lining up.
Wednesday the 26th of August fades a bit. The wind swings onshore, and the quality drops. Then from the 27th of August right through the first days of September, it’s a classic case of too much of a good thing. The swell cranks up big time – we’re talking 12ft to 18ft of SSW groundswell, with a very long period around 17 seconds. The energy readings are insane, like 10020 up to 17599, but it’s all going to be blown out by strong onshore winds. This setup would be more interesting for the kite surfers, honestly. The conditions are just too messy and powerful for a fun paddle surf.
There’s a big gap of poor surf after that, with fresh cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions through the end of August and into early September. The last few days of the forecast, around the 3rd and 4th of September, show a bit of a rise in swell again, but the wind is still fresh and cross-shore, so it’s still a marginal call.
So, the clear winner: Tuesday the 25th of August. Morning is clean, afternoon is glassy. That’s the one to circle.
Stay sharp.
