Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Riviere de Galets is cooking up for us over the next couple of weeks.

The swell window is showing some activity, but the first few days are messy. We’ve got a pulse of solid SSW groundswell rolling in over the weekend, but the winds are going to mess with it. Saturday morning, July 11th, has a 6ft SSW swell with a 16-second period – that’s proper long-period groundswell, which will groom up nicely at this reef and point setup. The wind is cross-off from the East at 13 mph, keeping things clean. The combined energy is solid at 1543, but the forecast calls it marginal due to tide. Saturday afternoon gets worse with a cross-shore chop, so the morning window is the only move.

Sunday, July 12th, sees the swell building to 8ft from the SW, with a 15-second period and cross-off winds from the ENE at 9 mph. This is a solid, punchy groundswell – combined energy jumps to 3847 – but at 8ft, this is getting into expert territory. It’s still clean, so if you’ve got the skills, Sunday morning is a standout for the week. It’s too big for beginners, but for the crew who can handle it, this is where it’s at. The water temperature is sitting at 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.

Monday morning, July 13th, drops slightly to 7ft from the SW with a 14-second period and the same clean cross-off wind. The energy is still strong at 2324, and conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. That morning session is the call. Monday afternoon turns onshore and choppy, so don’t sleep in.

Then we hit a rough patch. Tuesday, July 14th, through Wednesday, July 15th, has the swell dropping to 5-6ft, but the wind cranks up to 16 mph from the East and ESE, creating a cross-chop. The energy is moderate (between 1126 and 1874), but the quality is poor. Not worth paddling out.

Thursday, July 16th, drops further to 5ft from the East with a short 9-second period. Cross-off wind, but the combined energy drops to 757 – weak and short-period junk. Not your day.

Now, here’s a real bright spot: Friday, July 17th. We get a 3-4ft S swell with a 16-second period. That’s a very long period groundswell, and the winds go glassy – only 3 mph from the NE in the afternoon, cross-off. The energy is still decent at 1457. The conditions are “excellent for experienced surfers.” This is the sleeper standout of the whole outlook. Small but perfectly clean and lined up. This is the day to bring your favourite board and enjoy some super clean, long-period waves.

Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are similar small clean windows with 5-6ft ESE swell at 9 seconds, combined energy around 693-758. “Expect very good conditions” with light land breezes. Nice for a cruise but not the big stuff.

Now, Monday, July 20th – wow. The swell pushes up to 10ft from the SW with a 16-second period. Combined energy hits 4485. That is a very strong, very long period groundswell. The forecast says the swell is too big for this break, and the wind and tide are favorable – but at 10ft on a reef/point, that’s only for the absolute top tier of big-wave chargers. The afternoon settles to 8ft with still clean conditions, which is more manageable but still expert-only.

After that, Tuesday through Sunday, July 21st to 26th, the wind turns mostly cross-shore or cross-on, and the swell direction swings around to SE with short periods (8-9 seconds) and moderate energy. There’s a pulse of SSW groundswell again on the 25th and 26th with 5-6ft and 16-second period, but the cross-on wind spoils it. The combined energy is strong (1884-2888), but the quality is marginal. The last afternoon on the 26th is a write-off with choppy conditions.

The takeaway: The true standouts are Sunday morning, July 12th for the big, clean, expert-level SW groundswell, and Friday, July 17th for the glassy, small-but-perfect long-period S swell. The week of the 20th has potential for experts only, but the wind is less reliable.

Signing off,
Rusty
