The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Riviere de Galets. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, so let’s break it down.

The first few days are a bit of a write-off, to be honest. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th have some swell, but the wind is a pain and the quality is just not there. You’ll see some chest to head-high waves from the ESE, around 6ft to 8ft, but the cross-shore wind will chop it up. Not worth paddling out for.

Now, Friday the 17th morning is where it gets interesting. The wind drops to glassy, absolute perfection, and we get a clean 3ft groundswell from the south with a very long period of 17 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (791). This is a point and reef setup, so that long period will wrap in nicely. It’s a small, clean session for the early crew. Crowds are sometimes here, so you might have a few friends.

Saturday the 18th morning is also a cracker. Another glassy morning, 4ft of south swell, period at 14 seconds. Again, clean and fun (667). This is the kind of weekend morning you dream about.

Sunday the 19th drops off a little, small SW swell at 3ft, still clean but weaker.

The real standout window is Monday the 20th. Monday morning is looking prime. We’ve got a 5ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period, glassy conditions, and the combined energy is strong (1447). The direction is right on the money for this break. This is excellent, experienced surfers will be smiling. Monday afternoon picks up to 7ft, but the wind shifts onshore, so the morning is the call.

Tuesday the 21st holds some size, with 8ft SSW swell, but the wind is cross-on all day, making it a bit lumpy. That’s a powerful wave, but not clean.

From Wednesday the 22nd right through to Sunday the 27th, the wind is a persistent cross or cross-on from the east and southeast, and the swell is all over the shop. The waves are big, 7ft to 10ft, but the quality is poor. The combined energy is high (over 2000 at times), but it’s just messy. This stretch is more for kite surfers than paddle surfers, to be honest. The cross-shore wind is strong, 15 to 18 mph, and the surface is lumpy.

Then we get a massive pulse on Friday the 24th. The morning has a 8ft SSW swell with an 18-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 4943. That’s some serious power. The wind is cross-shore, not ideal, but the size and period are huge. The afternoon is even bigger, 10ft, but the wind picks up and the report says it’s too big for this break. That’s an expert-only window if you’re feeling brave, but be warned.

The final days of the month, from the 28th to the 30th, are more of the same: strong cross-shore winds, big lumpy swell, and not much quality. The 30th morning has a 10ft ESE swell with a short 9-second period and onshore wind – that’s a no-go.

So, to sum it up: the best bet is Monday the 20th morning. That glassy, 5ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period at Riviere de Galets is the pick of the bunch. Clean, powerful, and well-directed. The other standout is Friday the 17th morning for a small but glassy session. Everything else is either too windy, too messy, or too big for the conditions.

Keep an eye on the forecasts, because the second week is promising but uncertain.

Rusty.
