The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, switching to feet. Honestly, the story doesn’t change – just the numbers. I’ve stared at the charts for Punta Pitt and the next couple of weeks look grim. We’re looking at a real flat spell with only tiny, grovelly little waves sneaking in, and nothing worth getting excited about. This isn’t a case of the forecast being moody; it’s just a persistent run of close-to-nothing swell and cross-off winds.
The whole 16-day window is a tough one. From Wednesday the 19th of August right through to Friday the 28th, every morning and afternoon shows either no rideable swell or absolute dribble. You’ll see the odd 0.3ft to 0.7ft reading from the north-west or north, with a short period of 8 seconds – that’s pure windswill with hardly any push. The combined energy is low, sitting at just 3 to 6 for most of that time, which is about as weak as it gets. The wind is a constant cross-off from the SSE or S, mostly in the 9–16 mph range, which keeps the surface clean but does absolutely nothing to help the lack of waves. Honestly, for a solid week and a half, there’s nothing to recommend.
A slight flicker shows up late on Friday the 28th of August in the afternoon. A little 0.7ft pulse from the NNW creeps in with an 11-second period (moderate groundswell), bumping the combined energy to 11. Still poor, but at least a tiny bit of texture. The next day, Saturday the 29th, the morning bumps up to a combined energy of 10 from a 0.7ft, 8-second north swell, with the same cross-off breeze. It’s still tiny and gutless, but the conditions are clean. That’s the least bad option of the whole window, but I wouldn't call it a standout. Not even close to worth a paddle if you’re serious.
After that, it fades again into the first few days of September, with only whispers of 0.3ft swell from the NW and periods climbing to 11–13 seconds. That long period suggests a groundswell, but it’s so small it won’t break properly on Punta Pitt’s reef setup. The combined energy hangs around 5–6. It’s still poor surf.
I hate to say it, but there’s no real standout here. Not one session gets even close to a 5/10 on the fun scale. The wind is always cross-off or occasionally cross, which is fine for keeping it tidy, but there’s just no swell to work with. If the swell were bigger and the wind howling, you might think about a kite, but not with these feeble little 0.7ft bumps. It’s a blank run that looks pretty normal for this spot when the north-west swell is absent. Forecasts can change, but right now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
