The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s be straight with you. Looking at the next 16 days for Punta Mero, the honest truth is it’s a tough stretch. We’ve got a long run of marginal to poor conditions ahead. There’s a nearly two-week gap of poor surf quality before we finally see a window of something rideable.

The outlook starts with Sunday afternoon, September 13th. We’ve got a tiny 1.0ft swell coming from the SW, but with a cross-onshore wind and choppy conditions, it’s pretty much unsurfable. That theme continues day after day. The swell does build a bit, hitting a combined energy peak of 377 on Tuesday the 15th with a 3ft SW swell, but the wind stays messy and cross-onshore, ruining any shape. The water temp is a scorching 81°, which is far warmer than normal for this time of year, but you won’t care when you’re staring at a choppy sea.

We do see the swell period stretching out to 20 seconds on the 19th, but again, the winds aren’t cooperating. It’s a real grind.

Finally, after day after day of poor scores, we get a flicker of hope. On Monday morning, September 28th, there’s a light rain forecast and a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE. This is the only standout in the whole window. For that morning session, the conditions are actually clean. We’ve got a small 2ft swell from the SW with a very long period of 19 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 356. This long-period groundswell is going to wrap nicely around the Punta Mero point, offering lined-up, shaped waves. It’ll be small, but clean. Since it’s a point break, that long period will work beautifully. Just keep in mind, the crowds here are often, so you’ll have company.

So, the call is: don’t bother for the first two weeks. Wait for that Monday the 28th morning. It’s a small, clean session for the patient surfer.

Rusty.
