The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down what Puerto Azul has in store for us.
Honestly, the whole 16-day stretch is a tough one. The swell hangs around but the wind just won’t get right – a persistent cross-shore breeze messes up the surface the entire time. The first week is a total loss. From Thursday 6 August right through to Friday 14 August, it’s all poor surf. That’s nine straight days of bumpy, choppy conditions.
Even when the swell size picks up, the quality stays bad. Around Saturday 15 August, the swell hits 7 ft from the ENE with a period of 8 seconds, and the wave energy climbs to a moderate level. But with that cross-shore wind still blowing, it’s a messy, lumpy ocean. That size is getting a bit big for beginners, but for the experienced crew, there’s some power if the wind would only turn. It never does.
The second week doesn’t offer much relief. Sunday 16 August still has cross-wind, with swell at 6 ft from the ENE (8 sec) and energy easing a bit. Monday 17 August goes small and weak, and Tuesday 18 August brings stronger cross-wind again.
I can’t find a single standout day here. The wind never goes offshore or glassy. The swell is coming from the ENE and NE, which isn’t the optimum NNE direction for this point break, so the waves won’t set up right. Honestly, this is looking more fun for kite surfing than paddle surfing with that constant cross-breeze. Keep an eye on it – forecasts can change – but for now, it’s a bummer.
