The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a proper surf. We’ve got a run of days where the waves are just gonna be a mess of short-period, cross-onshore slop. There’s a stretch from now until the 13th where things are just plain poor, with weak energy and choppy conditions. It’s not a good look.

The swell is coming in from the ENE, which is cross-on for Playa Pelua. This is a point break, and it’s inconsistent even on its best days, so you really need the conditions to line up. They aren't. We’re looking at wind speeds around 12 to 15 mph for most of the mornings, chopping up what little swell there is. The water temp is 80°, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing while you’re getting skunked.

There’s a small bump in energy as we head into the second week. On the 14th, the swell starts to pick up a touch, around 5ft, but it’s still coming from the wrong direction and the wind remains cross-on. By the 15th and into the 16th, we see the most size on offer, with the swell reaching 6ft on the morning of the 16th. The energy numbers climb too, up into the 500s (combined energy of all swells directed here: 509), which shows there’s more push. But, and it's a big but, the period is only 8 seconds, so it’s gonna be a messy, crumbly wave. All that extra size isn't going to turn into clean lines.

Honestly, the best you can say is there is surf, just not surf worth getting excited about. The conditions never improve enough to make it a genuinely good session.

There’s a chance on the 18th that the wind drops to a light breeze in the afternoon, which could make it less of a washing machine. Also, on the 21st, we see some storms around, which might mess with the wind. That’s about the only bright spots on the horizon.

So, my call is to wait this one out. It’s a poor outlook, and I don’t see any standouts in this entire 16-day window. Save your energy for a better swell.

Rusty, signing off.
