The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a 16-day window for Playa Parguito, and I gotta be honest with you – it’s a tough stretch. The whole period is a bit of a battle, with the wind playing havoc and the swell not quite lining up right. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird there.

We kick off on Saturday, 08 August, and there’s just nothing happening. The swell is weak, only 3ft from the NE with a short period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy is a paltry 70. The wind is a cross-onshore E at 16 mph, so it’s choppy and messy. This pattern sticks around for days. Through Sunday and Monday, it’s more of the same – cross-onshore winds, small 3ft to 4ft swell, periods barely hitting 6 seconds. The energy stays low, in the 60s and 80s. Honestly, it’s a write-off.

Tuesday, 12 August, we see a tiny bump in the afternoon with energy hitting 101, but the swell is still only 4ft and the wind is onshore from the ENE at 22 mph. It’s not surfable. Wednesday and Thursday mornings are also lumpy and cross-onshore. Thursday afternoon, 13 August, the swell picks up a bit to 5ft from the NE with a period of 7 seconds, and energy jumps to 200, but the wind is still onshore and messy.

Then we get to Friday, 14 August. The morning is a risk of thunderstorms with a cross-onshore wind, but the afternoon shows a bit of promise. Swell hits 7ft from the NE with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 761. The wind turns light onshore from the NE at 9 mph. This is the biggest swell of the whole run, but it’s still onshore and the quality is poor. For a beginner spot, 7ft is getting too big, and the wind won’t clean it up. It’s a shame.

Saturday, 15 August, the swell drops back to 6ft with a period of 8 seconds, energy at 413, but it’s cross-onshore and lumpy all day. Sunday, 16 August, the swell drops right off to 3ft, and we’re back to weak energy. Monday, 17 August, has a long-period groundswell of 12 seconds from the NNE, but the swell is tiny at 2ft to 3ft, energy around 189 to 224. The wind is still cross-onshore or onshore, so it’s not going to be any good.

From Tuesday, 18 August, right through to the end of the forecast on Sunday, 23 August, it’s a repeat of the same sad story. Small swell, 3ft to 4ft, short period of 5 to 6 seconds, and persistent cross-onshore winds from the E or ENE at 16 to 25 mph. The energy stays below 100 for most of it. The whole setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.

There are no standouts here. The best on offer, if you’re desperate, is the Friday afternoon, 14 August, when the swell is biggest, but it’s still poor quality. The rest is a long gap of nothing. For a spot that’s usually very consistent, this is a real dry spell. Don’t hold your breath; forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.

Rusty.
