The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m going to level with you—this is a tough outlook for Moliets Plage. The next two weeks are a real mixed bag, and honestly, a lot of it is just going to leave you frustrated. We’ve got a solid stretch of weak, messy conditions early on, but there are a couple of windows where it might just come together for a wave or two.

The first real chance we see is Thursday, the 6th of August. The morning has a clean look with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, and the swell is a bit more substantial at 4ft from the NW with a period of 8 seconds. The combined wave energy is moderate at 178, so there’s some push there. The water temperature is a very notable 76°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—a real bonus if you’re in a thin wetsuit. That morning session is your best bet early on, as the afternoon gets choppy again.

After that, we’re back into a trough of poor surf conditions with small, weak swell and onshore winds. You’ll see a couple of mornings on the 13th and 14th of August that are clean again, with light cross-offshore winds, but the swell is tiny—3ft and 1ft respectively. Those are “surfable but very ordinary” days; fine for a beginner to practice pop-ups, but not much else. The combined energy on those days is weak (70 and 84).

Now, the standout that’s worth circling on your calendar is Monday, the 17th of August. The morning session is the one. We’ve got offshore wind from the SE at 6 mph, clean conditions, and a 4ft NW swell with a 9-second period. The combined energy hits 222, which is solid, moderate wave energy. It’s consistent and the wind will keep it clean. Crowds are *sometimes* an issue here, and given it’s the best looking window in two weeks, expect others to have the same idea. This is the one to aim for. The afternoon is more marginal, so get it early.

Outside of that morning on the 17th, it’s a long haul of mostly small, choppy, or just poor surf. The gap between the Thursday the 6th and that Monday the 17th is nearly two weeks of very ordinary conditions. For a spot like Moliets Plage, which is *fairly consistent*, this kind of blank run is a bit of a bummer, but it happens.

Until next time, keep your eye on the horizon.
