The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board and let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, so we gotta pick our moments.
The surf starts out pretty weak and wobbly, but things build into a solid pulse by the end of the first week. The standout window looks like the 11th through the 14th, with a real taste of quality in there. Be patient early on, because the ocean is going to have some mood swings.
Wednesday morning (5th) kicks things off small at Luna Roja, a reef break that’s exposed to the SSE swell. We’re looking at a modest 2ft SE swell with a short 9-second period. The water is sitting at 51°F, which is a massive 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a bit of a treat. Light offshore wind will keep it clean, but it’s pretty gutless. The combined energy is weak (89), so it’s only just surfable.
The rest of Wednesday and into Thursday (6th) goes a bit south. The wind swings onshore and lumps things up, dropping the quality fast. By Friday (7th) morning, there’s a bit more push with a 5ft S swell and a moderate cross-offshore wind, but the energy is still only moderate (360) and it’s a marginal call. Friday afternoon cleans up with a WNW offshore, but the swell backs off to 3ft, so it's ordinary.
Saturday (8th) gets messy. The swell builds to a 6ft SW, but the wind is howling from the WSW at 22-28 mph, making for clean but blown-out conditions. The energy is getting stronger (537 in the arvo), but the wind is the killer. Not a paddle day, more of a sit-on-the-beach day.
Now, Sunday morning (9th) is where things get real. The swell jumps to a solid 10ft SSW with a 9-second period, and the energy is strong (1992). The wind is offshore from the W, so it’s clean, but this is way too big for the break. This is expert-only, and even then, it's likely a washing machine. Unless you're a legend, give it a miss. The afternoon sees the wind swing onshore and the quality drops out.
Monday (10th) is more of the same poor, cross-onshore conditions, with a 7ft S swell and fresh winds. Not worth the paddle-out.
Then we get to the good stuff. Tuesday morning (11th) is a standout. The swell eases to a manageable 7ft SSE, the period stretches to a solid 11 seconds, and we get a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is strong (2027). This is a proper clean, powerful reef wave for the experienced crew. It's not for beginners, but if you’re confident, this is the pick of the first week.
Wednesday (12th) is still nice, with a 4-5ft SSE swell and a very light offshore wind, dropping to a 3 mph breeze. The energy is moderate, and the waves are clean. Good conditions, a notch down from Tuesday but still a solid run.
Thursday (13th) backs off a bit to 2-3ft, but the period stretches out to 12-13 seconds, making for clean, lined-up walls. It’s small but fun.
The real gem might be Friday morning (14th). The swell is 3ft SSE, but the period jumps to a very long 16 seconds. This is proper groundswell, and with a light offshore wind, it’ll be glassy and perfect for the reef. The afternoon pushes up to 5ft with a 15-second period, and the energy is strong (1059). This is the true standout for quality over size, but for the next week, the bigger Tuesday morning will have more power.
After that, the surf starts to taper off into the second week. Saturday (15th) has a fading 4-5ft SE swell, but the tide and conditions look questionable. By Sunday (16th) it’s dropping to under 3ft, and the wind goes cross-shore on the arvo. The swell window is basically over.
The final stretch gets poor. From Monday (17th) through Wednesday (19th), we see a mix of gale-force winds and fading easterly energy, dropping from 3ft to 2ft. It’s not worth your time, honestly. By Thursday (20th), it’s flat and messy, with swell heights down around 1-2ft and a weak cross-shore.
So, to sum it up: the early week is junk, the weekend of the 9th is too big, but Tuesday the 11th and Friday the 14th are your best bets. Both have clean conditions and solid energy, just different kinds of waves. Don't sleep on that Friday morning glass.
Rusty.
