Alright, my friends, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you: we’re in for a long, dry spell. I’ve checked every day from now through July 21st, and there isn't one session worth paddling out for. This is a full 16-day stretch with a big fat zero on the board. No standout, no hidden gem, just a whole lot of nothing good.
The only spot in the mix is Long Beach. It’s an exposed SE-facing break, and it hardly ever breaks consistently anyway. From Monday, July 6th, all the way to Tuesday, July 21st, it’s the exact same sad story: a relentless fresh cross-onshore wind, mostly from the E or ENE, blowing at 15 to 22 mph. This constant onshore breeze is killing any chance of clean waves, leaving the ocean lumpy, messy, or choppy the entire time. The water temp is 83°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least it’s warm.
The swell is there, but it’s completely useless with this wind. Swell heights run from 4 ft to 8 ft, but it’s all short-period windswell from the E or ENE, with periods of just 7 to 9 seconds. The combined wave energy hits moderate to strong levels, but none of that power translates into good rides because of the wind. Even when the swell pushes past 8 ft on Thursday, July 9th, and Friday, July 10th, it’s not a plus—that size, with that wind and short period, is just dangerous and messy, for experts only. For the rest of the time, the 5 ft to 7 ft range is too big for beginners given the conditions.
Look, this is a beach-and-reef setup. With this much onshore wind and sloppy swell, the whole period looks way more interesting for kite surfing than for paddling. Sometimes the run stays poor for a while, and this is one of those times. We just gotta wait it out—forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
