Alright, Rusty here. Let's break down the story for Long Beach.
We've got a solid two-week stretch ahead, and I've got to be straight with you – there’s no good surfing in this forecast. The same crummy pattern holds from start to finish: cross-onshore wind, dud swell period, and generally ugly water.
Starting Friday, July 3rd and going right through to Saturday, July 18th, the wind is hammering from the east and east-northeast at 15 to 25 mph, always cross-onshore. Swell heights bounce between 4 ft and 8 ft, but the period is stuck at 8 seconds – that's weak, short-period windswell. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits a moderate 819, but with that wind it’s meaningless. Expect lumpy, choppy, messy conditions every session.
In that first week, through July 9th, the swell sits around 6 ft to 8 ft, but cross-onshore winds ruin any chance of a clean wave. By July 10th, it gets bigger – up to 8 ft – and the wind hits 25 mph, making for an even worse mess. That's too much size for learners, and with this surface chop, even experienced surfers are better off staying home. Into the second week, from July 13th onward, the wind doesn't let up. The swell slowly fades from about 7 ft down to 4 ft by July 18th, but it’s still choppy and lumpy the whole way.
The swell is coming from the east, while the optimum direction here is southeast. So not only is the wind wrong, the swell direction is off too. The waves will be weak, sectiony, and hard to enjoy.
If you’re into kite surfing, this wind consistency might be your jam. For a surfer with a paddle in hand, it’s a long, blank run. The only hopeful note is that it gets smaller at the very end, but the quality never improves.
Rusty.
