The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Long Beach has got in store for the next couple of weeks in good ol’ feet and miles.
Alright, I won’t sugarcoat it—this stretch is pretty grim. The first week, from Monday the 17th through Sunday the 23rd of August, is a total write-off. Every session is tagged as poor surf conditions. Cross-on winds blowin’ from the east and east-northeast at 12 to 19 mph, and the swell’s short-period, only 7 to 8 seconds. Wave energy’s moderate, in that 200-400 range, but it’s all messy, lumpy, and choppy. That ENE swell direction is cross-on, so nothin’ clean. Water temp’s about 84°F on Monday morning—average for this time of year, so that’s a small plus.
Then comes a glimmer on Monday the 24th of August. The mornin’ session is still messy with moderate cross-shore wind from the NE at 12 mph, but the swell jumps to 12 seconds—that’s a long-period groundswell—from ENE, with strong wave energy (673). Still marginal, but there’s hope. Then Monday afternoon gets real interestin’: the wind goes light from the SE, only 6 mph, onshore. The swell pumps up to 7ft from ENE, with a very long period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy hits a strong 1275. Conditions are unknown, but this is the standout of the whole outlook. That long period will make the waves more powerful and better shaped, though at a beach break like Long Beach, it might break a bit straight. For an intermediate lookin’ for some grunt, this is your session.
But after that? Tuesday the 25th of August goes back to poor surf with onshore winds and short-period junk, and from Wednesday the 26th right through to Tuesday the 1st of September, it’s the same old story: cross-on winds, 7-8 second swell, poor conditions. There’s a bit more energy on the 1st of September with 6ft swell, but the wind’s still cross-on and it’s poor. So, overall, it’s a bleak run. Long Beach is inconsistent anyway, so a blank streak like this ain’t that unusual. But if you’re keen for a wave, circle Monday afternoon the 24th—that’s the one.
Hang in there, mate. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
