The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening. Honestly, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions, so don't expect much until later on.
Right now and for the next several days, Leivada (Tinos) is being hammered by strong northerly winds, which are blowing straight onshore. We’ve got some small swell, starting around 3 feet from the north on Monday the 14th, but the period is short, just 4 to 5 seconds, and the combined swell energy is weak (37). The wind is a fresh breeze, so the surface will be messy. There’s no quality on offer here.
This pattern continues through the week. By Wednesday the 16th, the swell picks up a little to 5 to 6 feet, with the energy climbing to 211, but it’s still short-period and the onshore wind is relentless. It’s not worth paddling out.
Into the weekend of the 20th and 21st, we see the swell building again, reaching 7 to 8 feet from the north-northwest on Monday the 21st, with combined energy up to 628, which is strong. But the period is still short at 6 to 7 seconds, and the wind is strong and onshore. This is more of a windy, messy situation – looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, honestly.
The wind finally starts to ease on Thursday the 24th. We get a gentle offshore breeze from the south-southwest, and the surf is clean. But the swell is tiny – just 3 feet from the north with a short 5-second period and weak energy (40). It’s not really enough to get excited about.
The best chance we see is on Sunday the 27th. Swell from the north around 6 feet, with a 7-second period and combined energy of 388, so moderate energy. The wind is a fresh breeze from the north, which is onshore, so it won't be perfect. It’s not a standout, just the biggest of a poor run.
So, overall, there’s no true standout session in this 16-day window. The conditions are poor, and the wind is the main problem. If you’re desperate, Thursday the 24th has clean conditions but almost no swell, and Sunday the 27th has the most size but onshore wind. For now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
