The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a good hard look at what’s coming for Kewalos. To be honest, we’re in for a bit of a lean stretch. The first few days are a write-off, but there’s a glimmer of something more promising further out if you’ve got the patience.
The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real shot at anything rideable doesn’t show up until Tuesday the 14th. It’s a clean, cross-off breeze, but the swell is a tiny 3ft from the SSW, with a weak combined energy of (274). It’s a marginal call, and honestly, it’s one for the longboard if you’re desperate. Wednesday the 15th is even worse with a score of zero thanks to cross winds and poor conditions.
We’ve got a long gap of basically nothing from the 15th through the 18th. The wind is howling out of the ENE at 18 to 22 mph, keeping things clean but the swell is just too small and weak to bother. Thursday the 16th has a 2ft SSW swell with a very long period of 17 seconds and strong energy (412), but the height is just too small to do anything with it. Same story repeats through the weekend.
Then Sunday the 19th, we get a bump in height to 5ft, but it’s short-period windswell at 8 seconds from the ENE and the energy is high (459). That’s a messy, closeout combo for a reef break, and the rating is a flat zero. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st see a drop in height to 3-3ft, but the period stretches out to 14-16 seconds from the S. The energy is moderate to strong (up to 620), and the wind is cross-off. It’s still only marginal, but it’s just about surfable on a high tide.
The standout window, if you want to call it that, is from Wednesday the 22nd onward. The swell is still small, 2ft to 3ft, but the period gets very long, hitting 24 seconds on the 22nd afternoon. The energy is strong (730) and it’s a clean, cross-off wind. The best day on offer is likely Sunday the 26th. The morning sees a 3ft SSW swell with an 18-second period and very strong energy (1156). It’s still a clean cross-off breeze. The rip bowl at Kewalos should have some walled-up lines, but remember, with a period that long, it’s going to be a super straight, fast wall. It’s an advanced wave no matter what, and with that sort of energy, it’s for experienced surfers only. The crowd can be a factor here, so be ready for a lineup.
Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th also have some potential with 3ft to 4ft SSW swell, good period, and strong energy. The 28th afternoon jumps to 5ft from the ENE with a short period, which is a red flag for quality.
To sum it up: The first week is a dud. The second week has some really long-period, clean SSW groundswell, but the heights are tiny. The best bet is the 26th morning with the biggest energy, but don’t expect a big wave day. This is a finesse game for the experts.
Rusty.
