The Lowdown
Alright folks, let’s talk about the next 16 days. The only wave on the map is Kewalos, a serious reef break for advanced surfers only, and it likes the swell coming from the SSE.
Starting off on Thursday, August 20th and Friday, August 21st, we’re looking at tiny surf, just 2 ft. The wind plays nice though – Thursday morning has a light cross-shore, and Friday afternoon goes dead glassy, which is a dream for clean face. Swell is coming from the SSW/SW, not the ideal direction, but the water temp is normal for this time of year. Energy is low, in the 261 to 312 range, so it’s weak. Friday afternoon is the only time worth paddling out in this first bit.
Then things go sour. From Saturday, August 22nd all the way to Sunday, August 30th, the trade winds roar at 15 to 25 mph from the ENE. The wave height climbs to 6 ft, and the energy gets strong (384 to 982), but it’s all short-period windswell. That’s blown-out, choppy junk. A long dry spell with nothing good to say – looks more like a kitesurfer’s playground.
Here’s the payoff: Monday, August 31st brings a big jump. Swell hits 8 ft to 8 ft from the ENE, with a very strong energy reading of 1986 to 2053. This is expert-only territory, no joke. The period stretches to 13 seconds – real groundswell – but the direction is cross-off for a reef that wants SSE, so it’s a little wonky.
The best window is Tuesday, September 1st and Wednesday, September 2nd. Still overhead at 7 ft from the ENE, strong energy (around 1597 to 1610), and the period settles to 10-12 seconds. The wind eases to a moderate 12 mph breeze. This is the cream of the crop – solid, powerful, and cleaner than anything else in the forecast. For the experts, that’s the call. By Thursday, September 3rd, it’s fading back to 5 ft and the energy drops quick.
So your one shot is that August 31st to September 2nd stretch. Big, powerful, expert swell with the cleanest wind we’ll see. The first two weeks are a wipeout from the trades. Crowds at Kewalos are often there, but with this size, only the grizzled locals will be out.
