The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the table in feet and miles per hour.
Water temp is pretty normal for this time of year, nothing to write home about. The first real chance to paddle out is Thursday, August 20th at Kewalos. It’s a reef break, so it’s for advanced surfers only. Morning brings a clean 2ft swell from the SSW with a super long 18-second period. The wind is light offshore from the NNW, glassing it up. The combined swell energy is moderate (262). That’s the pick: Thursday morning and afternoon have the best mix of size, direction, and clean conditions. Crowds are likely here, so get there early.
Wednesday the 19th is flat and weak, with 1-2ft surf and a moderate cross-off breeze – not worth the leash. Friday the 21st picks up to 2ft from the SW, but the wind turns cross-on or cross and the conditions are questionable. Skip it.
Saturday the 22nd through the middle of next week is all about strong ENE trade winds, 15-31 mph, and a building but messy windswell. Wave heights climb from 2ft to 7ft, but the period is short, 6-8 seconds, and the combined energy gets strong (614-751), but it’s rough and poor quality. Sunday the 23rd has 6-7ft surf but with 7-second period – that’s a washing machine. By Monday the 24th we’re at 6-7ft with near gale winds. Not surfable. This stretch looks better for kiteboarding.
We get a little relief around Wednesday the 26th afternoon with a 2ft S swell and a long 18-second period, but the wind is still a fresh 19 mph cross-off. Clean, but marginal. Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th mornings have waist-high 3ft S swells, periods of 14-16 seconds, with moderate cross-off wind. It’s grovel territory, but there’s a chance.
From Friday the 28th afternoon through the end of August and into early September, it’s poor. Swell runs from 5ft to 6ft, but it’s all short-period windswell from the ENE, with moderate to fresh cross-off wind. The energy is moderate to strong (331-501), but the quality is junk.
Now for the long-range look: Tuesday, September 1st, things change. Swell jumps to 7-8ft from the E, with period stretching to 11-13 seconds. The combined energy goes to very strong (1506-2564). Wednesday the 2nd is even bigger, hitting 10ft from the E with 12-13 second periods and energy over 3000. Wind is still cross-off and fresh to strong, so it’ll be clean but that size is for experts only. It’s promising, but it’s more than a week out, so keep checking in – could be a proper bomb.
Rusty.
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Warm (max 27°C on Thu afternoon, min 24°C on Tue night). Wind will be generally light. | Days 5-7 Weather SummaryLight rain (total 5mm), mostly falling on Mon afternoon. Warm (max 27°C on Sat morning, min 25°C on Fri night).
