The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming up for Kewalos over the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s gonna be a slow start, with mostly marginal conditions for the first week and a half, before we get a couple of windows that might get you excited. Water temp is 26°, right on average for this time of year—nothing odd there.
First up, Monday afternoon July 13th, we’ve got a tiny 3ft swell out of the SSW with a long 15 second period. Combined wave energy is moderate (542). Wind is a cross-off from the ENE at 19 mph, so it’s clean but small. This is an advanced reef break that’s inconsistent and often packed. Honestly, barely worth paddling out.
Tuesday morning the 14th stays clean with a cross-off breeze, but swell drops to 2ft from the SW at 14 seconds, energy down to 337. Afternoon is even worse. Wednesday the 15th brings some cross-chop in the morning and still tiny—2ft. Not your day.
Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th? Tiny 2ft to 2ft swells with long periods, but no height. Wind stays a fresh cross-off, but surf is poor.
Then Saturday the 18th—a shift. Swell jumps to 6ft from the ENE, but with a short period of just 7 seconds. That’s windswell. Combined energy is moderate (466). Wind is a strong 25 mph cross-off, so it’ll be clean but lumpy. At 6ft, it’s pushing into intermediate-expert territory. Quality still isn’t there.
Sunday the 19th is similar—6ft ENE swell at 8 seconds, energy around 525. Marginal. The pattern holds through the week—smaller S swells mixing with short-period ENE pulses, all with cross-off trades. Nothing’s firing.
Now, Saturday July 25th shows a bit more life. We’ve got a 6ft ENE swell at just 7 seconds, but the combined energy jumps to 903—strong territory. Wind is a fresh cross-off from the NE at 19 mph, so it’s clean. At 6ft with that short period, it’s punchy and stacked—one for experienced surfers.
Sunday the 26th holds 6ft from the ENE at 8 seconds, energy 808. Still marginal, but clean.
But the real highlight is Tuesday July 28th. This one’s the session to circle. We get a solid 7ft groundswell from the ENE at a long 13 seconds, and combined wave energy hits a strong 1386. Wind is light from the ESE at just 6 mph, laying down a glassy cross-shore with only small ripples. That long-period groundswell will wrap perfectly around the reef at Kewalos, giving powerful, well-shaped lines. At 7ft, it’s strictly for experts on a reef, but the energy is legit. The crowd will be there because it’s such a quality setup.
Monday the 27th has some cross-on and onshore wind with thunderstorms, so that’s a write-off. But come Tuesday morning and afternoon the 28th, it’s your best window. Long-period ENE groundswell at a reef like this—you’ll get the right walls.
So, bottom line: the first week and a half is mostly small and average. The 25th to 26th has some size but short period. The real standout is Tuesday July 28th—big, clean, powerful groundswell with light winds. That’s your day.
Rusty.
