The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. We're looking at Kewalos.
Water temp is about 81°, right on the money for this time of year. First few days are pretty meager, but there's a tiny window of clean surf if you're sharp.
Monday the 17th kicks off small. Swell is around 3 ft from the south with a long 14-second period. Wind is a fresh cross-offshore breeze, so it's clean, but the wave energy is only moderate (690). It's a small, long-period groundswell – not much to work with.
Tuesday the 18th is a total skip. Swell hits 4 ft, but it's short-period junk from the east-northeast at 7 seconds. Wind is cross-off, but the conditions are poor.
Wednesday the 19th drops right down to 2 ft and 1 ft. Too small.
Here's the highlight: Thursday the 20th. This is your window. We've got a clean 2 ft south-southwest groundswell with a very long 17 to 18-second period. Wind goes super light – a light breeze in the morning, almost glassy in the afternoon. Wave energy is still moderate (279-270), but that long period will give the waves real shape and power at a reef like Kewalos. Expect good surf conditions. This is your go.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd slide back into the marginal zone. Swell is 2 ft from the southwest, but the wind goes cross-shore, putting a bit of ripple on the face. Energy picks up (314 to 369), but it won't be as clean. Saturday afternoon gets blown out by a fresh 30 km/h breeze.
From Sunday the 23rd onward, it gets big and ugly. The east-northeast windswell builds to 6 ft on Sunday, hits 8 ft by Tuesday the 25th, and roars to 12 ft by the 27th. The period stays short (7-9 seconds) and the wind is a strong cross-offshore (25 mph or more). Wave energy goes through the roof, hitting strong to very strong (1015 to 2730), but the quality is poor. This is big, chunky, wind-blown surf. For a reef, this will be a messy, powerful mess. It's too big for beginners after 5 ft, and honestly, with that short period and wind, even experts are in for a fight. This setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The final days of August and into September keep the trend: big swell (5 ft to 7 ft), short period, and strong winds. Confidence is lower this far out, but the pattern is consistent – big and rough.
So, the clear winner is Thursday the 20th. Small but clean and long-period. After that, there's a long stretch of poor to marginal days. The window slams shut.
Rusty.
