The Lowdown
Alright, it’s Rusty here, and I’m gonna level with you straight up. The next 16 days are looking pretty bleak for a proper surf, especially here at our local spot.
Right off the bat, we’ve got nothing decent lined up. The first potential window, starting Sunday the 26th of July, is a write-off: the swell is weak at just 3ft from the WNW with a short period of 7 seconds, and a stiff 12 mph NW wind is blowing straight onshore. The combined energy is a measly 82, which is just pathetic. The water is sitting at 84°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's small comfort when there's barely a wave worth paddling for.
For the next few days, it's more of the same. Monday the 27th sees a tiny pulse of energy (126 combined) early, but the cross-onshore wind kills any chance of quality. Tuesday the 28th is even smaller with only 2ft, and by Wednesday the 29th we're down to 1ft and 12 combined energy. Honestly, it’s a desert out there. There’s a stretch from the 26th of July right through until the 10th of August where not a single session earns more than a 1 out of 10 rating. That’s over two weeks of virtually nothing.
If I had to pick the least ugly option, it’d be the morning of Monday the 3rd of August. The wind goes completely calm – glassy – and there's 2ft of weak, short-period swell from the NW with a combined energy of 65. It’s surfable, but only just, and it’s tiny. Definitely not a standout, just a moment of complete calm on an otherwise choppy, blown-out mess.
The reality is that for the whole 16-day window there's no strong groundswell, no long period, and no clean offshore wind. The swell direction hangs in the WNW to NW zone, which is actually what this break ideally wants, but the size and period are just too small. If you’re a beginner and just want to bob around, maybe that morning of the 3rd is your only chance, but for anyone looking for a proper wave, this is a total bust. It’s a long blank run, but this area often goes quiet for stretches like this.
Stay patient, boys. The board stays in the car for now.
