The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with ya. The outlook for the next couple of weeks is a tough one for the Herzliya area. The swell is barely ticking over, and the winds are mostly a mess. There’s a couple of brief windows where it might be worth a look, but you’ll have to be patient.
Let’s start with what we’ve got. The only spot in the frame is Haambatia (Herzliya). The water temp is sitting at 82°, which is about 2° warmer than the long-term average for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a touch on the warm side, so you’ll be fine in a spring suit or just boardshorts.
The first real chance of anything comes on Saturday the 25th of July. The swell bumps up a little, with a 4ft wave from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. That’s a short period windswell, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and less powerful. The combined energy of all swells directed here is 138, which is moderate energy. The morning has a light cross-shore breeze from the SSW at 6 mph, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but not totally blown out. Haambatia is an exposed beach break, so it picks up what’s out there, but it’s inconsistent and can get crowded often. This is your best bet in the whole window, but it’s not a classic. It’s a small, short-period wave for the patient surfer. The afternoon, however, switches to a 9 mph onshore WNW wind, which will chop it up, so make the most of the morning.
The build-up to that Saturday is a whole lot of nothing. From Sunday the 19th through to Friday the 24th, the swell is tiny – 1ft to 3ft – with periods of 5 to 7 seconds. The winds are mostly cross or onshore, with a few glassy mornings on the 20th and 31st, but the swell is just too small to do anything. The combined energy during this stretch is consistently weak, with values like 26, 16, and 8. It’s a flat spell. You’re looking at a solid 6-day gap of no surfable waves.
After the Saturday peak, it drops back down again. The swell fades to 2ft on Sunday the 26th, and the winds become cross-onshore from the NNW, so it’s messy. The rest of the week into August is more of the same: tiny swells, marginal conditions, and poor surf quality. The morning of Wednesday the 29th gets a score of 1 out of 10, meaning it’s only marginal, with a 3ft swell and clean onshore wind, but it’s likely still too weak to ride.
The only other glimmer is on the morning of Friday the 31st of July. The wind goes glassy from the WSW at 3 mph, but the swell is only 2ft with a 7-second period. The combined energy is 47 – weak. It’s a small, clean wave, but it’s for the longboard or a funboard. The afternoon blows out again.
For the first week of August, the swell is tiny again – 1ft to 2ft – with poor winds. The morning of Monday the 3rd of August is glassy again, but with only 2ft of 5-second period NW swell and combined energy of 12, it’s basically flat. The setup is so weak and the winds are often cross-onshore, that if you’re into kite surfing, you might get more out of the afternoon breezes than trying to paddle. The waves are just too small for a proper paddle session.
The bottom line: the best on offer is the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. It’s the biggest swell, but it’s short period and inconsistent. The glassy mornings on the 31st and 3rd of August are clean, but the swell is tiny. It’s a quiet period, so keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
