The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, in feet and knots for those who think that way.
Let’s be real about Gibbs. This whole 16-day outlook is one long wait for something that just doesn't show up. The first hint of a wave isn't until Thursday, August 20th, and it’s a sad little bump.
The story is all strong east and east-northeast trades, blowing offshore and clean, but there’s zero swell to groom. For the first several days, the combined energy is literally 0 – a dead flat ocean. The water temp is a normal 84°F, so at least you can float without a shiver.
Thursday the 20th brings a tiny north swell of about 0.7ft. The wind is fresh offshore, which is perfect for the surface, but the period is only 8 seconds with a combined energy of 4-5. You’ll see a ripple, but that’s it.
Friday the 21st is as good as it gets, which isn’t saying much. A 1ft north swell with an 8-second period, combined energy hitting 11-12. The wind is a moderate offshore breeze, so it'll be clean. For an advanced reef break, that’s barely enough to wet your wetsuit. You’ll be hunting for any little ripple that stands up.
After that, the tap turns off again. From the 22nd onward it’s flat, flat, and more flat, with combined energy scores in the single digits or zero. There's a tiny blip on the 31st – a 0.3ft north swell, 9-second period, combined energy of 2. That’s not a wave, it’s a whisper.
So here’s the truth: the next 16 days are a washout at Gibbs. If you need to paddle, Friday the 21st offers the only chance at a gutless little knee-high wave. Otherwise, find a different hobby until this pattern breaks.
Rusty.
