The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee, settle in. Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for Dreamland. Now, before you get too excited, I gotta be straight with you - the next 16 days ain't the cleanest run we've ever seen, but there's some real meat on the bone if you know when to go and you're an experienced surfer. This is a spot for the crew who have earned their stripes. The water's sitting at a toasty 78°, with the temp anomaly being just about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there, nice and comfortable.
The whole pattern is dominated by a long-period SSW groundswell. This swell has got some serious legs on it, period pushing 15 to 16 seconds, creating waves with proper shape and energy. Problem is, for most of this run the wind is cross-off, not true offshore. It's clean, but not quite the perfection we dream of. That said, the combined swell energy is often pumping in the thousands, showing there is a lot of power in the water (2415 on Saturday morning). But the overall quality ratings are just marginal, so we're picking the best of a tricky bunch.
The standout window is sitting right at the start. Saturday, the 22nd of August. The morning session is the one. Clear skies, a moderate offshore breeze from the ESE at 12 mph, and a solid SSW swell of 7 ft with a 16-second period. That's proper groundswell. The combined energy is hammering at 2415, meaning there's plenty of push. These conditions are labelled as excellent, and for advanced surfers, this is your golden ticket. It's a bit too much size for beginners, but if you’ve got the skills, you'll be in for a treat. The wind is true offshore, so those waves will be holding up clean and tight. Keep in mind the SSW direction is bang on the optimum for Dreamland, so it should line up nicely.
After that Saturday morning, the rest of the first week and into the second is a bit of a wash of "marginal" surf. The swell hangs around in the 5 ft to 7 ft range, with that cross-off wind sticking around. The combined energy drops a bit, but it's still moderate to strong. Then there's a bit of a lull with smaller surf and shorter periods towards the end of August.
Now, for the second week, we jump to Monday the 31st of August. That afternoon session has a nice bump. A clean 6 ft swell from the SSW, but the period jumps to a very long 20 seconds. The combined energy rockets back up to 2317. That's a serious groundswell pulse. It’s labelled as excellent for experienced surfers again.
Then, the biggest energy spike of the whole outlook hits Tuesday, the 1st of September. The morning is the real deal. A 7 ft SW swell, with a long 18-second period, and combined energy at 3345. The wind is a gentle offshore breeze from the ESE at 9 mph. That is clean, powerful, and lined-up. This is the second big standout. It's big, around 7 ft to 8 ft, so definitely for the experienced crew only. The afternoon gets a bit gusty, so get on it early.
The pattern fades out after that, with the combined energy dropping back below 1000 on the 4th and 5th of September, before a final, promising pulse on Sunday, the 6th of September. A big SSW swell of 7 ft to 8 ft returns, with combined energy cranking up to 3157. The period is a solid 18 seconds. The wind is a gentle offshore breeze in the morning, making that a very promising last call.
So, to cut the chit-chat, there are two absolute standouts: Saturday morning, the 22nd of August and Tuesday morning, the 1st of September. Both offer excellent, powerful groundswell with offshore wind. Get on it.
Rusty.
