The Lowdown

Right, listen up. Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at the next couple of weeks for this stretch of coast. We’ve got a bit of a slow burner on our hands, a lot of swell in the water but the quality is gonna be the main talking point. The wind is mostly going to be blowing across the waves, not off them, which will keep things a bit lumpy and messy. The water’s sitting at 78°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no dramas there, just your usual boardshorts weather.

We’re looking at a run of surf starting Wednesday the 19th and running through to the end of the month, but it’s hardly going to be firing. The first few days are all about that cross-off breeze and a solid 8ft to 8ft of SSW swell, with the energy strong, reading 3575 on Wednesday morning. It’s got some decent period to it, around 18 seconds, so there’s plenty of push. But the wind isn't quite right, and the call keeps coming back as ‘marginal’ with questionable tides. We’re getting waves, but they’re going to be harder work than they should be for the size. This is a big, powerful swell, pushing past 8ft, so it’s more for the advanced crew out at Dreamland; beginners should sit this one out. It’s gonna be pretty full-on.

Through Thursday and into Friday the swell stays solid, but the wind just keeps messing with it. We had a brief moment Friday morning where the wind flicked offshore, making things cleaner, but the swell backed off to 5ft to make it a bit more manageable. That morning’s looking like the pick of the first few days, but the waves themselves will be a bit weaker on energy (2607). It’s a long period SSW swell too, which can make the beach breaks a bit walled-up and straight. Dreamland's a beach and reef mix, so a reef could be your friend here to find a better peak. By the weekend and into next week, the size drops a notch, hovering around 6ft to 7ft, but the wind is stubborn, staying cross-off and keeping things clean-ish but with a bit of texture. The consistency is only ‘fairly consistent’ so you’ll be waiting for sets. We’re not talking about any standouts in this first week, it's just going to be a lot of average, slightly disappointing surf.

As we roll into the following week, the energy starts to fade out. On Wednesday the 26th, we’re down to a 5ft swell with the period dropping out, down to 13-14 seconds. The energy is weakening, dipping to 845, and the whole thing just looks like it’s shutting down. There’s a tiny blip Thursday afternoon, but it’s short-lived and still just a cross-off breeze.

But then, hold on. Thursday the 28th. That’s the one I’ve got circled. Early on Thursday morning, the wind drops right out, going glassy. And we’ve got a nice clean 8ft of SSW swell with a 16-second period rolling in. The energy is right back up (2821) and the call is for “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is the standout of the whole run. Get yourself down to Dreamland for that early session, because it’s going to be the cleanest and most powerful it’s been all week. The size is still on the big side, so you need to know what you’re doing, but with the wind off and the lines stacking up, that’s where you want to be. The long period means you might have to be a bit patient between sets, but the ones that come will be worth it.

After that, the run fizzles out. It’s back to average conditions through the weekend, with the swell dropping to 5ft and the period shortening up. Energy dips back down to 918-1026, and the excitement is just gone. Monday’s a bit of a tease with some long-period swell showing up (21 seconds), but it’s weak on the face.

Then, heading into the second week, look out for Tuesday the 1st of September. We’ve got a jump back to 8ft of SW swell, with the energy back up to 3839. It’s another solid one, but the wind is cross-off again, so it’ll be messy for a big day. It looks powerful but not pretty. A smaller, cleaner window shows up on Wednesday afternoon, the 2nd, with the wind going offshore but the swell only 6ft. That could be an alright afternoon. We finish the period with a bit of a pulse on the 3rd, back to 6ft and moderate energy, but nothing that’s screaming ‘drop everything’.

So, it’s a mixed bag. A lot of waves, but not a lot of quality. The standout is Thursday morning, the 28th. If you can, go and get some. Otherwise, you’ll be making the most of a lot of cross-off, average conditions. It’s not going to be flat, but it’s going to test your patience. Keep an eye on that Thursday morning.

Rusty.
