The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s shaping up for Dreamland over the next couple of weeks.
First up, we’ve got a solid little run coming through, but it’s one for the more experienced crew. The water’s sitting at 78°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so nothing to worry about on that front.
The action kicks off on Monday, 17 August, with a bit of a tease. We’re looking at 5ft of SSW swell, but it’s a bit messy and the wind is cross-off, so it’s more of a warm-up than a standout. The real fire starts on Tuesday, 18 August. That morning, the swell jumps to 6ft from the SSW, with a 16-second period – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is offshore from the ESE at 12 mph, which is a major plus, meaning clean, lined-up waves. The combined energy is pumping hard at 2883 (moderate to strong energy). This is the pick of the early window, and for experienced surfers, it’s going to be excellent. The only thing to keep in mind is that long-period swell like this, with 16 seconds, can be a bit too straight for the beach break, but Dreamland is a beach and reef setup, so the reef should sort it out.
Wednesday, 19 August, sees the swell max out at 8ft from the SSW, with a 17-second period. The combined energy is massive at 4101 (strong energy). However, the wind is cross-off, not full offshore, and the forecast notes suggest marginal conditions. That’s a lot of water moving around, and with that size, it’s definitely for experts only. Over 8ft, you’re in the big league.
The rest of that week and into the next, from Thursday, 20 August, through to Saturday, 29 August, we’ve got a long stretch of fairly consistent surf, with swell sizes ranging from 5ft to 8ft, mostly from the SSW. The combined energy stays in the moderate to strong range (between 1158 and 3695). But the wind is almost always cross-off, and the comments are constantly “marginal.” It’s not bad, but nothing is really firing. It’s a bit of a flat spell for quality, to be honest.
We do get a bit of a spark on Sunday, 30 August. The morning shows 7ft of SSW swell, with a 16-second period, and the wind drops to a light breeze from the SSE. The combined energy is 2336 (moderate). The notes say “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers,” and that light breeze should glass it off. That’s a solid morning option.
Then, looking further out, Monday, 31 August, and Tuesday, 1 September, we see a real pulse of energy. Monday afternoon has 7ft from the SSW, with a 19-second period, and combined energy of 4218 (strong). Tuesday, 1 September, has 8ft from the SW, with an 18-second period, and energy of 4045 (strong). That’s real groundswell, but again, the wind is cross-off, and the conditions are described as marginal. The size is only for experts, and the long period means it might be a bit roping at the beach break, but for the reef, it could be something special. Keep an eye on that.
So, the standout on offer is Tuesday morning, 18 August: clean, offshore, 6ft, and pumping energy. The other one to watch is Sunday morning, 30 August, with lighter winds. The big swells at the end of the month are promising but less certain, especially with that cross-off wind.
There’s a bit of a gap in quality from the 20th to the 29th, where it’s just surfable, not spectacular. But overall, Dreamland has a fairly consistent run here, so it’s not a total write-off.
Rusty.
