The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s break down what’s heading to Dreamland over the next couple of weeks.
The first few days are pretty quiet, with no surf worth talking about right away. Surf shows up from Thursday the 16th, but it’s nothing to write home about. Swell sits around 5ft to 6ft from the SSW and SW, with a solid 15 to 16 second period – that’s proper groundswell, and with that long period it’ll wrap in nicely at this beach and reef setup. The combined energy is moderate to strong (1093 to 1218), so there’s some push, but the wind is a fresh ESE breeze all day, cross-off, meaning it’s clean but not glassy. Water temp is 80°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a wetsuit. Honestly, Thursday is just a so-so start – the scores are low and the conditions are only marginal.
Friday the 17th is similar, with fresh ESE wind blowing offshore in the morning – that’s a positive for clean faces – and swell about the same size, 5ft from the SW. The period bumps to 16 seconds in the arvo, pushing energy up to 1218, but again, it’s only rated as marginal. Saturday and Sunday drop off a little more, with the swell easing to 4-5ft and the period shortening to 13-14 seconds. Energy dips into the 700-900 range, and we’ve got rain showers and even a risk of thunderstorms on Sunday. Nothing special here.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday the 20th sees a solid pulse of SSW groundswell hitting 7ft with a very long 17 second period in the morning, and the combined energy jumps right up to 2698 – that’s strong stuff. This is the standout period for the first week. The wind is cross-off from the ESE at a fresh breeze, so it’ll be clean but a little bumpy. That size is pushing into expert-only territory – over 8ft is big, and 7ft is still solid, so beginners should sit this one out. The long period means it’ll break a bit straight at the beach, but on the reef it should line up nicely. Tuesday the 21st backs off to 5-6ft, and by Wednesday the 22nd we’re back to 4-5ft, all with moderate energy levels and cross-off winds. Crowds at Dreamland are sometimes an issue, so keep an eye out.
The second week starts off flat-ish from Thursday the 23rd through Friday the 24th, with swell down to 3-4ft and energy dropping below 800. Not worth getting excited about. But then Saturday the 25th morning has a glimmer – 4ft SSW swell with a 15 second period, offshore ESE wind at a moderate 16 mph, and energy of 1480. The score is a bit better here, and the offshore wind will make it clean, but it’s still only marginal.
The real highlight of the whole outlook, though, is the last few days. Sunday the 26th morning has a 5ft SE swell, but the period is only 8 seconds – short period windswell, not as nice. Skip that. Focus on Tuesday the 28th: 5-5ft SSW swell, 15 second period, light to moderate SE wind, and combined energy climbing to 1358-1548. Then Wednesday the 29th is the pick – 5ft SSW swell, 14 second period, gentle SE breeze at just 9 mph, cross-off but clean, and the conditions are described as “expect very good surf.” Energy sits around 1082, so moderate but quality. Plus, the wind is light, so it’ll be glassy. This is the one to aim for. Thursday the 30th also looks fun with 3ft SW groundswell and a very long 18 second period, gentle breeze, and good conditions. Friday the 31st brings a major spike in energy – up to 2024-2382 – with 3-4ft SSW swell and a super long 21-22 second period. That’s a very long‑period groundswell, which will be best on the reef here, but the wind is a moderate sea breeze, so it won’t be as glassy as Wednesday.
For the best on offer, I’d say Wednesday the 29th is the standout – clean, gentle wind, decent swell size and energy, and the reef should handle that long period nicely. Tuesday the 28th and Thursday the 30th are close seconds. The big Monday the 20th is worth a look for experts wanting size, but the wind is a bit stronger.
That’s the picture from here. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because things can change, but for now, Dreamland has a few gems scattered through the fortnight.
Rusty.
