The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and we're looking at a stretch for Dreamland. It's a beach and reef set-up, fairly exposed to the swell, and the optimum direction is from the SW. The water's sitting at about 78°, which is about 1° cooler than normal for this time of year – pretty average, nothing to write home about.
Alright, let's get into it. The next few days are a bit of a mixed bag. The surf is there, but the conditions keep it from being anything special. We've got a solid groundswell running, with periods around 15 to 16 seconds, which is long-period stuff. That means good shape potential, but at a beach and reef break like Dreamland, those long lines can sometimes jack up and close out or be a bit tricky. The wind is a persistent cross-off from the SE, which keeps the surface clean, but it's not the classic offshore glass we'd be hoping for. The energy is moderate to strong, with swell heights hovering around 6ft. That's fun-size for an intermediate, but nothing that will blow your mind. The morning of Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are your best bets early on, with that clean, cross-off wind. It's rideable, but it's not a standout.
Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th see the swell drop a touch to about 6ft, with the period still solid. The energy dips a bit, but it's still there. The wind stays cross-off. It's still clean, still fun, but the power is fading. You'll get waves, but you won't be bragging about it.
Now, Thursday the 27th is where it gets interesting. The morning swell drops to 4ft, but the period jumps to 16 seconds. The real story is Thursday afternoon: the swell bumps back to 4ft, but the period skyrockets to 20 seconds! That's a very long period groundswell, and the energy is pumping. This is the kind of swell that really needs a good setup to work. For a beach and reef, these long lines can be a bit too straight and fat, but if the tide is right, you might get some proper, lined-up walls. The wind is a gentle breeze, cross-off, so the surface will be good. This is a promising window, but a bit of a specialist swell.
The best of the whole run, without a doubt, is Friday the 28th. Both morning and afternoon are pumping 8ft of SSW swell with a 16-second period. The energy is massive – strong to very strong. The wind is still cross-off from the SE, keeping it clean. However, at 8ft, this is expert territory. This is big, powerful, long-period swell hitting a fairly exposed beach and reef. It could be absolutely epic for the right crew, but it's not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced. If you're a competent charger, this is your window.
After that, the swell backs off. Saturday the 29th through to Monday the 31st see the size drop back to the 5ft to 6ft range, with periods dropping to 13-15 seconds. The wind stays consistent. It's still clean and rideable, but the magic is gone.
We roll into September. Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd see another pulse of swell, with 6ft to 7ft and a 16-17 second period. The energy is back up. This is another good, solid run of surf, with that same clean cross-off wind. Thursday the 3rd through Saturday the 5th is a slow fade, with the swell dropping to 4ft and the energy weakening. The wind stays good, but the waves get small.
Then, looking at the long-range, Sunday the 6th of September shows another pulse. The afternoon looks best, with 7ft of SSW swell at 16 seconds and good energy. The wind is a gentle cross-off. This is a promising, more distant call. It's a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but it could be another great day. Monday the 7th follows with 6ft, still clean.
The standout here is Friday the 28th of August. That's the day for the big wave crew. If you're looking for the best balance of size, power, and clean conditions, that's it. For the rest of us, Thursday the 27th afternoon with that super-long period is an interesting wildcard, and the whole first week of September has a consistent, solid run of surf. The crowds at Dreamland are listed as 'sometimes', so you might have company on the good days.
