The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of swell coming through for Dreamland, but it’s not quite the clean, perfect picture we’d hope for. The wind is a bit of a letdown for most of the forecast, blowing cross-off from the SE, which keeps the surface tidy but not the glassy perfection we dream of. Still, there’s plenty of energy to go around.
The water is sitting at 78°, which is about 0.9° cooler than normal for this time of year – so just your average late summer temp, nothing to write home about.
We kick off on Sunday the 23rd with a 6 ft SSW swell, but it’s already a bit of a mixed bag. The wind is a moderate 16 mph cross-off, and the wave comment flags it as marginal. The combined energy is moderate at 2256, but the quality is just not there. Monday the 24th is similar, with 6 ft SSW swell, but still that cross-off wind and "marginal" tag.
The first real standout shows up on Thursday the 27th. Thursday morning is still a bit meh, but Thursday afternoon – that’s the one. The swell drops slightly to 4 ft, but it’s from the SSW with a very long period of 20 seconds. That’s groundswell gold for a beach and reef setup, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 2579. The wind is a gentle 9 mph cross-off, and the forecast calls it "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." This is the best on offer in the first week. The long period will mean nice, lined-up waves, but expect some longer lulls between sets.
Friday the 28th brings a big jump in size – 8 ft SSW swell, with strong energy readings of 3612 and 3255. But that’s expert territory. The wind is still cross-off, and the wave comment is back to "marginal." For the average surfer, that’s probably too much, and the setup might be more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.
The swell stays solid through the first week of September, with another 6 ft to 7 ft SW swell on Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd, but the wind never really turns pure offshore. It’s always that cross-off SE breeze, which keeps it from being truly epic.
A second standout is on Monday the 31st of August afternoon – 5 ft SSW swell with a 17-second period, gentle 9 mph cross-off wind, and an "excellent" call. That’s a great session for the experienced crew.
Looking further out, the energy drops a bit into the first week of September, but we see another pulse on Saturday the 5th of September with 6 ft to 7 ft SSW swell and strong energy readings (2645 and 2136). That’s promising, but it’s a long way off, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, the best session is definitely Thursday the 27th afternoon. If you’re an experienced surfer, that’s the one to circle. The Monday the 31st afternoon is also a solid pick. For the rest, it’s consistent, but the wind holds it back from being truly special.
Rusty.
