The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Dreamland over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of groundswell on the cards, with a long-period SSW pulse rolling in. The water is sitting at 78.1°F and that’s about what you’d expect for the time of year – nothing weird going on there. The first action kicks off Friday afternoon, 21st August, with a 7.5ft SSW swell at 17 seconds. That’s proper long-period groundswell, carrying a lot of energy (3305). The wind is cross-offshore from the ESE, so the wave faces will be clean, but it’s a moderate breeze, so a bit of texture. This is advanced territory – 7.5ft with that long period will have some push, so it’s not for the learner crew. The break is a beach and reef setup, fairly exposed to the swell, and the direction is spot on for the optimum SW.
Saturday morning, 22nd August, is where it really starts to sing. The swell drops a touch to 7.2ft, still from the SSW and still a 16-second period. The wind goes offshore – ESE at 15 mph – and that is a major plus. The wave energy is strong (2417), and the conditions are clean. This is the standout for the first week. For experienced surfers, this is the session to aim for. The south-west swell direction matches the break’s optimum, the energy is there, and the offshore breeze will keep the lines tidy. Crowds are a possibility at Dreamland sometimes, so get in early.
Sunday morning, 23rd August, keeps the run going. 5.9ft of SSW swell, 15-second period, and again offshore wind from the ESE at 12 mph. Clean, moderate energy (1986), and excellent for the experienced crew. The afternoon turns cross-off, so the morning window is the pick.
The middle of the week (Monday 24th through to Thursday 27th) stays surfable but the quality drops a notch. The swell hangs around 4.9ft to 5.9ft, still from the SSW, but the wind goes cross-offshore, and the energy dials down. It’s clean, but not the same punch. Thursday afternoon the 27th sees a bit of a spike in energy (2749) with a 5.9ft SSW swell, so keep an eye on that.
Friday 28th August brings another push. The swell jumps to 8.2ft from the SW, 16-second period, and the energy is thumping (3415). That’s a big day – definitely only for experts. The wind is cross-off from the SE, so the surface will be clean, but 8.2ft of groundswell on a beach and reef setup is serious. The south-west direction is bang on the optimum. The morning is the bigger of the two sessions.
After that, the swells taper off into the start of September. The last week of August and first few days of September are a bit of a mixed bag – the swell drops, the period shortens, and the energy fades. But hold on, because Tuesday 1st September morning has a 5.6ft SW swell at 17 seconds, and the energy comes back up (2471). The wind is cross-off, but the afternoon turns gentle breeze and cross-off, with a 5.2ft, 16-second SW swell, and the energy is still strong (2498). The conditions are excellent for experienced surfers.
Wednesday 2nd September is the real standout for the second week. Morning brings a 7.2ft SW swell at 17 seconds, with a gentle breeze from the ESE and cross-off wind. The energy is up there (2898) and the conditions are clean. That’s a big, powerful swell with the right direction. It’s a long-range call, so it’s promising but less certain. If it holds, that’s the one to circle on the calendar.
Thursday 3rd September keeps the good run going with a 5.9ft SW swell in the morning, light breeze from the SSE, and cross-off wind. Clean, good energy, and excellent conditions. The afternoon also holds.
The final days of the outlook (4th and 5th September) see the swell drop back to 4.6ft to 5.2ft, with shorter periods and lighter energy. Still surfable, but nothing to get too excited about.
