The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about your local surf for the next couple of weeks.
We've got a solid, long period SSW groundswell rolling in for Dreamland, but it's a bit of a tricky one. The whole 16-day window is dominated by a big, powerful swell, but it's coming with a persistent cross-off wind from the ESE to SE. This keeps the waves clean-looking but not exactly glassy perfection. The surf is for experienced surfers only for most of the run, especially when the swell is pumping.
Kicking off Wednesday the 19th of August, we’re already in the thick of it. The swell is a chunky 8 ft from the SSW with a 17-second period, so that's a whole lot of energy pushing in. The water temp is sitting at 78°, which is about 1° cooler than the seasonal norm, so nothing too unusual there. The wind is a moderate ESE breeze at 16 mph, keeping things cross-off and clean, but it's a big, powerful wave. This is expert territory only.
The pattern holds through the rest of the week and into the next. Thursday and Friday see that swell staying over 8 ft, with the wind a steady 12-16 mph from the ESE. The sheer energy is massive. The period is mostly in the 16 to 18-second range, which is a proper groundswell, so expect long, clean lines with a lot of push. These are waves for experienced surfers who know their way around a heavy, long-period swell.
The first truly standout session comes on Friday the 28th of August. The swell is still a solid 8 ft from the SSW, but the wind drops right out. We’re talking a light SSE breeze at 6 mph. That's as close to glassy as it gets. The energy is still huge, and the 16-second period gives it that real deep ocean hum. The wave comment says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers," and I absolutely agree. That morning is the top pick of the whole run. The Friday afternoon is nearly as good with a gentle breeze, making it another prime session.
After that, the swell slowly starts to ease. We get a couple of days around the 5 ft to 7 ft mark, but the wind picks back up to a moderate SE breeze. The consistency is still there, but the quality drops a notch. The wave energy is still moderate to strong, but it's not the same magic as that Friday.
The real gap in the action comes from the 30th of August through the 3rd of September. The swell drops below 5 ft, and while the wind is mostly light, the energy is much lower. The 3rd of September morning has a small window of "very good surf conditions" with a 5 ft SW swell and a light SSE breeze, but it's a far cry from the power of the week before. The rest of that period is marginal.
So, bottom line: Dreamland is a go for the next couple of weeks, but it's not a beginner's spot. The big, long-period groundswell is the main event. The absolute standout is the morning of Friday, August 28th. Get on it if you've got the skills. The second week is a lot quieter, with only a fleeting moment of quality on the 3rd of September.
Rusty.
