The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Dreamland over the next couple of weeks.
It's a bit of a slow burn to start with, but there's definitely some juice building towards the end. The guiding principle here is a solid, long-period SSW groundswell, but for the first week or so, the wind is a persistent cross-offshore breeze. That's not terrible – it keeps the faces clean – but it's not the glassy, perfect combo we're all chasing. The real standout window is the first week of September, where the wind drops right back and the swell pulses.
We kick off on Monday the 24th of August. The swell is a lumpy 6 ft from the SSW at a long 16 seconds, but the cross-off wind is a bit stiff. The combined swell energy is pumping at 1766 (moderate to strong), but the conditions are just "marginal." It's surfable, but you'll be working for it. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
The rest of that first week – through to Friday the 28th – is similar. The swell hangs in there, bumping up to 8 ft on Friday morning (energy hitting 3887 – strong), but that moderate cross-off keeps it from being a standout. That 8 ft is getting into expert-only territory, especially with the strong energy.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th see the swell drop back a touch, with the wind still moderate and cross-off. The energy is still there, but the quality is just okay.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Monday the 31st of August, the swell period stretches out to 19 seconds – that's a proper, raw groundswell. The swell is 4 ft, but the energy is a solid 1581. That long period will make it grind and wall up at Dreamland, but it might be a bit too straight for the beach section. The wind is a gentler breeze, which is a big improvement.
But the real highlight is the first week of September. Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd have a clean 7 ft to 7 ft SW swell (energy around 2268-2322), with a moderate cross-off. It's still a bit on the bigger side, but consistent.
The absolute best of the forecast, however, is Sunday the 6th of September. The wind is a light, 6 mph cross-offshore breeze – almost glassy. The swell is 6 ft from the SSW, but the period is a dreamy 18 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 2940. The data says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." This is the one. The sets will be clean, powerful, and long. Monday the 7th follows it up with a similar 8 ft swell and light wind (energy 2566). That's your call to action. The 6th and 7th of September are the standouts, no question.
Remember, crowds can be possible at Dreamland, so get in early for those sessions.
Keep an eye on the 4th and 5th of September too – the wind turns a little onshore, so the quality drops off before the Sunday blast.
Rusty.
