The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Dreamland stretch.
The first half of the window is a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s a real standout building towards the end of the month and into the start of September. The water temp is sitting at 78°, which is bang on average for the time of year, so no worries there.
The first few days from Thursday the 20th into Friday the 21st are seeing a solid 8ft to 8ft SW groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (3737). But the wind is cross-off from the SE, making it more of a bumpy, tricky wave than a clean one. The conditions are labelled as marginal, so it’s not the pick of the bunch. The swell sizes are a bit too big for beginners, and the long period might make it break a bit straight at the beach.
Saturday the 22nd morning is where things start to look up. We’ve got a 7ft SSW swell, still a long period of 16 seconds, and the wind goes offshore from the ESE at 16 mph. That’s proper glassy conditions, especially for the experienced crew. The combined energy is still strong (2417), and it’s rated as excellent surf for those who know what they’re doing. The only downside is the break is fairly consistent, so you might be sharing it with a few others.
Come Sunday the 23rd, the early session is another beauty. The swell drops a touch to 6ft, but the wind turns even lighter, a gentle offshore breeze from the ESE. That’s the kind of clean, lined-up swell that’ll have you stoked. The period is still a lengthy 15 seconds, so expect some power.
The middle of the week, from Monday the 24th through to Wednesday the 26th, the swell drops off to 5ft to 6ft, and the wind flicks back to cross-off. It’s clean but not special, with the combined energy falling to moderate (943 to 1563). The scores are low, so it’s a bit of a lull.
Then we hit the real standout. Thursday the 27th morning sees a small 4ft swell, but by the afternoon it’s back up to 3ft with a very long 19-second period and a combined energy of 1563. The wind is a gentle cross-off from the SSE, and it’s another afternoon of excellent conditions for the experienced. Still, keep an eye on the tide.
The real meat and potatoes, though, is the run from Friday the 28th into the start of September. Friday the 28th morning has a 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and a gentle SSE wind. The combined energy is strong (3313) and it’s rated excellent. The best of the best, however, might be Tuesday the 1st of September. That morning is showing a 8ft SW swell, 18-second period, and a gentle SE breeze. The combined energy is a beastly 4546. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a bit of a long-range call, so it’s promising but not locked in. The wind is cross-off, but it’s light, so the waves will be holding their shape.
After that, Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd still have decent 7ft to 5ft SW swells, but the energy drops off into the moderate range. The wind stays cross-off, so it’s still surfable, just not as epic.
The last few days, Thursday the 4th of September, see the swell drop to 3ft to 5ft, with a long period of 18 seconds, but the energy is moderate (1183 to 1230). The conditions are marginal, so it’s a quiet end to the run.
Bottom line: if you’re after the cleanest, most powerful waves, aim for the Saturday morning the 22nd, the Sunday morning the 23rd, and especially the Friday the 28th morning and the Tuesday the 1st of September morning. The Tuesday the 1st is the one that’s got my heart racing.
Rusty.
