The Lowdown
Alright, surf fam, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
The big picture? We’ve got a solid run of groundswell from the south-west, but it’s a classic case of the swell being a bit too much for the average punter. The energy is pumping, but the conditions are often marginal, so you’ve got to pick your moments. The standout is clear: Saturday morning, August 22nd.
Let’s kick it off. The water sits at 78°, which is just about bang on average for this time of year – nothing to write home about, but nice and warm.
The first real window looks like Thursday, August 20th and Friday, August 21st. Swell is solid, pushing 8 ft from the SW with a 16-second period on Thursday morning, dropping to 8 ft on Friday afternoon. The wind is a cross-off from the ESE at 12-16 mph, which keeps the surface clean. The wave energy is strong – you’ll feel it at 3737 on Thursday morning. But the forecast says it’s marginal, likely due to the size and tide. This is a big swell for a beach-and-reef set-up, and honestly, the power is more suited to experienced surfers. A beginner will get eaten alive.
Now, the real gem. Saturday morning, August 22nd. The wind swings offshore from the ESE at 16 mph, and the swell is a solid 7 ft from the SSW with a 16-second period. The wave energy is still strong (2427). This is excellent, clean, offshore surf for those who know what they’re doing. The swell is a bit much for the average surfer, so if you’re not confident, sit this one out. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might get a few mates out, but it’s worth the paddle.
Things settle down a bit from Sunday, August 23rd through to Wednesday, August 27th. Swell drops to 5-6 ft, still a clean SSW groundswell, but the wind is cross-off, and the wave energy is moderate to strong (down to 882 by Wednesday afternoon). The forecast is consistently marginal, so it’s not a total write-off, but the conditions are just okay. You’ll get waves, but they won’t be the best of the run.
We hit another interesting patch around Friday, August 28th. The morning looks excellent again: 7 ft from the SSW, 16-second period, and a gentle cross-off breeze from the SSE at 9 mph. The energy is back up to 3031. This is another solid, clean option for the experienced crew.
The same pattern holds for Saturday, August 29th morning – 6 ft, clean, light breeze. Good, but not as punchy as the previous Friday.
After that, the swell stays in the 4 ft to 6 ft range for a few days with moderate winds, nothing that screams “drop everything and go.”
But hold on. Monday, August 31st afternoon looks promising, with 6 ft from the SW at 19 seconds – that’s a long period groundswell – and a gentle breeze. The energy is strong (2837). Then Tuesday, September 1st morning: 7 ft from the SW at 18 seconds, light breeze, clean. That’s excellent for experienced surfers again.
The last few days of the forecast, into Wednesday, September 2nd and Thursday, September 3rd, are more of the same – clean, but marginal. The swell is 6-6 ft, and the wind is light, but the energy drops off.
The verdict: If you’re an experienced surfer and you can handle 6 ft+ groundswell, the Saturday morning, August 22nd and Friday morning, August 28th sessions are the pick of the bunch. For the rest of us, the mid-week mornings from August 29th to September 1st offer cleaner, smaller options. But honestly, this is a run for the big dogs. The SW groundswell is relentless, but the conditions are often just on the edge of being more about survival than flow.
Keep your eyes on the forecast for these two big mornings. The long-range stuff (end of August into September) is promising but less certain.
Stay safe, and don’t be a hero if it’s too big.
Rusty.
