G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk surf.

Alright, we’re looking at a solid run of swell at Dreamland over the next couple of weeks, but don’t get too excited just yet – the wind is gonna be a constant battle. This is a beach and reef setup that’s fairly exposed, and the optimum swell direction is SW. We’re getting a mix of SSW and SW swells, so that part is fine, but those cross-off and onshore winds are going to keep things from being perfect. The water temperature right now at the start is 81°F, which is pretty much spot on average for the time of year.

The first wave of real energy hits from Wednesday the 8th of July. We’ve got a solid 7ft SSW groundswell (15-second period) rolling in, but it’s blowing 19 mph from the ESE – cross-off, not ideal. That’s a lot of chop for a clean wave face. The wave energy is very strong (1915). This pattern carries through Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th – same story: overhead swell (7ft to 6ft), long period (15-16 seconds), but the wind stays fresh and breezy. Thursday morning actually shows offshore wind, which is promising and will clean things up, but the overall forecast still calls it marginal. You’ll get waves, but they won’t be the best version of themselves. For the experienced surfer, these are doable, but beginners should steer clear when it’s over 5ft – and this is over that mark.

Saturday the 11th sees the swell drop a touch to 5ft, but still with that persistent ESE cross-off wind. The wave energy is still moderate to strong (1159-1255). By Sunday morning the 12th, the wind goes light offshore (12 mph) and the swell drops to 3ft – clean, but small. This could be a fun little window if you’ve got a log. Monday the 13th is tiny (2ft) but has a very long period 23-second groundswell – that’s a weird one. At that size and period, it’s mostly just an ocean heave. The energy reads higher (613) because of the long period, but don’t expect waves you can actually ride.

Then we get a pulse back on Tuesday the 14th – 6ft to 6ft SSW swell (18-second period), very strong energy (2163-2580), but again, cross-off winds from the ESE. This is the frustrating pattern. This window repeats through Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th, with swell holding around 5ft to 6ft, all cross-off. The wave energy is strong (1080-1764). Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th see the swell ease into the 4ft to 5ft range, still cross-off, still breezy.

The best window in the whole run? Look to Sunday the 19th of July. You’ve got a 5ft SSW swell (14-second period) with a light 12 mph cross-off wind from the SE. It’s not glassy, but it’s manageable, and the wave energy is moderate (847). It’s not the biggest, but the conditions will probably be the most user-friendly. Then Monday the 20th drops off briefly (3ft), but the energy picks back up.

Now the standout – and you’ll need to wait for it – is Tuesday the 21st of July. A strong 8ft to 8ft SSW swell (16-second period) slams in. The combined wave energy is huge (2659-3692). But, again, the wind is cross-off at 16-19 mph. This is big, powerful, long-period groundswell – it’s going to be a heavy, straight-breaking wall at Dreamland because it’s a beach and reef. This is expert-only territory, no doubt. The period is over 15 seconds, and on this setup, that means the waves will be shifty and hard to position for. Still, for the crew who can handle it, it’ll be the most energy of the whole 16 days.

After that pulse, Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd settle back into the 6ft to 7ft range. Thursday the 23rd actually shows the best winds of the whole forecast: a gentle 9 mph cross-off breeze, and the model says excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. The wave energy is still strong (1375-1520). That’s a late-game highlight and worth a look if you’re keen and patient.

Crowds are possible at Dreamland – it does say “sometimes,” so expect company on the brighter days, especially those cleaner windows. This break is fairly consistent, so the surf keeps coming, even if the quality is held back by the wind.

For the first week, the conditions are marginal. The second week has the biggest swell but also the same wind story. There’s a few gaps of small surf (like Monday the 13th), but generally, there’s something to ride every day.

Rusty.
