The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s cooking at Dreamland over the next couple of weeks.
The pattern is looking pretty solid for a stretch, but we’ve got to dial into the details. The water is sitting at 78°F right now, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing strange there.
The first real action kicks off on Tuesday, 18 August. We’ve got a clean 6 ft swell from the SSW, with a very long period of 16 seconds, meaning it’s proper groundswell with heaps of energy (2475). The wind is cross-off from the ESE at 16 mph, so the faces will be tidy. This is a beach and reef setup, and with that long period, the reef will be your best bet for a well-shaped wall. It’s a strong option, but the overall quality is held back a bit by the tide and conditions.
Wednesday, 19 August, the swell bumps up to 8 ft to 8 ft, still SSW, with periods pushing 17 to 18 seconds. The energy is huge (3575 to 4125). This is expert territory – over 8 ft is serious. The wind is still cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but this is a big, powerful ocean. Only for the experienced crew.
The standout morning is Thursday, 20 August. The swell is 8 ft from the SW, period 16 seconds, and the wind goes offshore from the ESE at 12 mph. That’s the magic combo: clean, strong, and offshore. The energy is still massive (3531). This is the best on offer in the whole window – a true highlight for those who can handle it.
After that, the swell drops a touch but stays in the 6 ft to 8 ft range through to Monday, 25 August. The wind stays cross-off, so conditions remain clean, but the tide issues keep the quality from being perfect. It’s still plenty surfable, especially for intermediate to advanced surfers.
We hit a bit of a lull around Wednesday, 26 August, with the swell dropping to 5 ft and energy falling to 880 (weak). The water gets a little cloudy too. Nothing too exciting.
From Thursday, 27 August, the swell picks back up slowly, but it’s still on the smaller side until we get to Saturday, 29 August, where it’s back to 6 ft to 7 ft from the SSW. The energy climbs (2116). The wind is still cross-off, so it’s clean but not glassy.
Now, the next real standout is Sunday, 30 August. The swell is only 4 ft from the SSW, period 13 seconds, but the wind drops to a light breeze from the SSE at 6 mph. That’s as close to glassy as you’ll get. The energy is moderate (1206). The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions,” and for a spot that can be a little inconsistent, this is a sweet, smaller day for anyone.
Finally, Monday, 31 August, rolls in with a 6 ft SSW swell, period 16 seconds, and light cross-off winds. The energy is solid (1574), and the conditions are rated excellent for experienced surfers. It’s a clean, lined-up wave, and the crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might get a few out, but it’s not a zoo.
The second week is a bit more uncertain, but the promising days are Sunday, 30 August and Monday, 31 August. The early window (Thursday, 20 August) is the real standout for the big-wave hunters.
Dreamland can be a bit inconsistent, but this stretch looks like it will deliver a few proper sessions. The reef is your friend with those long period swells.
Rusty out.
