The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about the waves on offer for Dreamland. The next couple of weeks are looking consistent with a solid run of SSW swell.
We kick things off on Saturday the 22nd of August with some solid energy already in the water. It’s a touch crossed-off from the SE at 12 mph, but the swell is a clean 7 ft at 16 seconds from the SSW. The combined energy is ripping at 2204 (moderate to strong), so there's plenty of push. Water temp is sitting at a warm 78°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year.
Sunday the 23rd is where it starts to get interesting. Morning brings offshore winds from the ESE at 16 mph. That's the good stuff. Swell drops a touch to 6 ft, but still a long 15-second interval from the SSW. Energy is still high at 1986 (moderate to strong). This is the standout of the first week. Dreamland will be clean, lined up, and grunty. It's an advanced spot, and the energy is decent, so it won't be for the faint-hearted. Afternoon sees the wind swing cross-off again, so hit that morning session.
The pattern holds through Monday and Tuesday, with consistent 6 ft to 6 ft SSW swell and 16-second periods. Winds stay cross-off, keeping things reasonably clean. By Wednesday the 26th, the swell drops to 5 ft, but the morning still has that offshore flow from the ESE, making it a very worthwhile session for the experienced crew with energy still at 907 (moderate).
Thursday the 27th sees a bit of a lull in size, with a 4 ft SW swell in the morning, but it jumps back up to 6 ft in the afternoon with bigger 15-second period and a massive energy reading of 2587 (strong). Friday the 28th is the big one for the experts. Look at this: 8 ft at 16 seconds from the SSW with energy at 3823 (very strong). The wind is a light cross-off from the SE at 9 mph. That's a big, powerful groundswell and it's going to be pumping, but at this size, Dreamland is strictly for advanced surfers only.
After that peak, the swell backs off a bit through the weekend and into the start of September, but stays fun. A quick note for Sunday the 30th: morning is 5 ft, but the energy drops to 886 (moderate). The run finishes off the first week strong and stays consistent.
Looking into the second week, things stay active. Monday the 31st of August has a weird one – a 4 ft swell but with a very long 19-second period, jumping to 3 ft at 20 seconds in the afternoon. Energy is still up around 1660 (moderate). That kind of period can be a bit too straight for a beach and reef setup, but it'll still offer some clean lines.
Tuesday the 1st of September sees a new pulse of SW swell, hitting 6 ft at 17 seconds with energy rocketing back to 3105 (very strong) in the afternoon. Wednesday the 2nd keeps that energy with 7 ft at 17 seconds. Again, this is heavy, hollow swell with strong energy and only cross-off winds. By Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th, things taper off significantly, with the swell dropping below 4 ft and energy falling out of the back of it – 640 (weak).
The final standout window of this outlook is the morning of Sunday the 6th of September. Swell bumps back up to 6 ft from the SSW, with a very light breeze from the SSE at only 6 mph. It'll be almost glassy. The energy reads 1186 (moderate). For a session over a week and a half away, that's a promising sign for a clean, fun surf.
Overall, the biggest, best, and cleanest window is Sunday the 23rd of August through Friday the 28th of August. If you're an expert, pencil in Friday the 28th. For a cleaner, slightly more manageable size, Sunday the 23rd morning is the true standout of the whole run.
Rusty.
