Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Dreamland's got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water is sitting at a warm 81°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The outlook starts on Monday the 6th of July, but honestly, it's a bit of a slow burner. That first week is gonna be a grind. We've got a decent amount of swell pushing through, with a solid south-southwest groundswell. The combined energy is strong, hitting values in the thousands (1404 to 2116), and with periods hanging around 15 to 17 seconds, there's plenty of power behind it. The problem is the wind. It's a persistent cross-off from the ESE to SE, blowing 16 to 22 mph. It keeps the surface clean, sure, but it's going to make things a bit lumpy and tricky. For an advanced spot like Dreamland, it’s doable, but the forecast notes suggest the conditions are marginal due to the wind and tide. It’s not going to be pretty.
The waves are going to be in the 4ft to 7ft range through the first week, so it's solid, but the raw energy isn't matching the quality on offer. It's a big, powerful groundswell that really needs cleaner conditions to shine. There are a few moments with offshore wind on the morning of Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th of July, which will be a big step up in quality. Tuesday the 14th morning looks promising with a fresh offshore ESE breeze and a 6ft SSW swell pumping with 17-second period and an energy reading of 2185. That could be the first real standout window, but it’s still a way off.
Now, hold onto your boards, because the second week is where this forecast gets seriously interesting. The period from Saturday the 18th of July through to Tuesday the 21st of July looks like the absolute highlight of this whole outlook. The wind drops right back to a light breeze (6-12 mph) from the ESE to SE, still cross-off but much more manageable. We’re looking at solid 5ft to 8ft swells from the SSW with periods still in the 15 to 17-second range. The energy readings are huge, climbing from 1649 up to 2701. That’s proper, powerful groundswell. For an advanced break like Dreamland, that’s gonna be game on. The Saturday morning and Sunday morning windows in particular are being flagged as "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." This is the time to be there. The swell size sits above 5ft, so it's not for beginners, and when it pushes over 7ft on Sunday and Monday, it’s strictly for the experienced crew.
The standout: Without a doubt, the window from Saturday the 18th through Monday the 20th of July. The combination of a big, long-period SSW groundswell with light winds and clean conditions is the best bet we’ve got. The swell direction (SSW to SW) matches the optimum direction for Dreamland, and the energy is through the roof. Just be ready for the crowd – Dreamland can get busy, and with this quality on offer, it’s going to be a popular spot.
Don't bother paddling out in the first week unless you're desperate and don't mind battling the wind. The second week is where the magic is.
Rusty.
