The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s break down what Dreamland is serving up. Water temp is about 78°F, which is pretty standard for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The run starts Wednesday the 19th with a real thumping. We’ve got 8ft to 8ft of SSW groundswell, with a long 17-18 second period. The energy is massive, reading 3637 and 4123. That’s a lot of power. The wind is a clean cross-off from the ESE, keeping the surface smooth. This is proper, heavy surf. Beginners should stay on the beach, but for experienced surfers, it’s a good challenge. The long period means the waves will have shape, but the sets will be spaced out.
Thursday the 20th is much the same, with 8ft to 8ft of SW swell at a 16-second period. The cross-off wind holds, so it stays clean. The energy is still very strong, in the 3500-3100 range. More of the same powerful stuff.
Friday morning the 21st is the pick of the early days. The swell drops to 5ft, but the period is a long 18 seconds, and we get a proper offshore wind from the ESE. The conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers, with clean, moderate offshore winds. The energy is still high at 2622. This is a dream setup, with the offshore wind grooming the long-period groundswell into clean, lined-up waves. The afternoon sees the swell build back to 8ft, with the wind going cross-off, but the morning is the clear winner.
The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd sees the swell settle to 6ft to 7ft, with a 15-16 second period. The wind stays cross-off. The energy drops from the 2400s to the 2000s. It’s fun, surfable, but not as punchy.
We hit a lull from Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 27th. The swell drops from 6ft down to 3ft. The energy fades into the 900s and even down to 628. The wind is still cross-off, so it’s clean, but there’s just not much to ride. Thursday the 27th afternoon has a small spike with a 3ft, 20-second period swell, but the energy is still low at 1361.
The absolute standout is Friday morning, the 28th of August. This is the one. We get a 8ft SSW swell, with a 16-second period, and the wind drops to 3 mph from the south, making it completely glassy. The energy is back up to 2856. It’s big, clean, and glassy. This is a session for the books. It’s over 5ft, so it’s for the experienced crew, but the glassy conditions make it a dream.
After that, the surf eases into a fun, consistent run of waves around 4ft to 5ft through the end of August, with clean conditions. Then, around Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of September, another solid pulse arrives. Swell builds back to 8ft to 8ft, with a 17-second period, and the energy jumps into the 3000s. The wind is a steady cross-off. It’s a promising return to bigger surf, but it’s far enough out to keep it in the “maybe” column.
So, if you’re looking for the best, lock in Friday morning the 28th of August. Friday the 21st is a solid second. The rest is a mix of solid waves and a few sleepy days. Keep your eye on that glassy morning.
Rusty.
