The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough outlook for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got waves, but the conditions are just not playing ball.

The overall pattern is pretty grim. We’ve got a persistent, strong cross-onshore wind that’s going to chop up everything on offer. It’s a real shame because the swell is there, but it’s going to be a battle for anything clean. The only spot on the radar is Caravelle (beach and point), which is exposed to the swell but that’s where the good news ends.

Let’s walk through it. Starting this Sunday, the 26th of July, we’ve got a small 4ft swell from the ENE, but with a 9 mph cross-onshore breeze, it’s already messy. The wave energy is weak (205). It’s a no-go. Monday the 27th is even worse; the swell drops to 3ft and the wind picks up to 12 mph, making it choppy and poor. The combined energy is very low (142). The pattern continues through the week. The swell builds a bit – Tuesday the 28th sees 4ft, and by Wednesday the 29th it bumps up to 8ft, but that’s accompanied by a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind. At 8ft, this is getting into expert-only territory if it were clean, but with that wind, it’s just lumpy, messy, and dangerous. The energy is there (715), but it’s wasted.

The whole first week and into the next is a write-off. The wind just doesn’t let up. We see a consistent cross-onshore breeze from the East or ESE, anywhere from 9 to 19 mph, day after day. The swell direction stays locked in from the ENE or E, and the period is short, between 6 and 9 seconds. This is short-period, wind-driven junk, not proper groundswell. There’s a brief moment on the 1st of August where the swell period stretches to 9 seconds, but the wind is still ruining it.

Honestly, there’s not a single standout session in this entire 16-day window. The conditions are consistently poor, and the forecast is very reliable on that. For a spot like Caravelle, which is a beach and point setup, with this much cross-onshore wind and significant swell, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.

So, I’m sorry to say it, but my advice is to leave the boards in the car. There’s nothing worth paddling out for right now. Sometimes you get a blank run like this, and it’s just the way it goes. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a hard pass.

Rusty.
