The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – it’s been a tough stretch and it’s going to stay that way for a while. The only break on offer in the next 16 days is Cane Garden Bay, and I’ve got to tell you, it’s a rare one, rarely breaks, and for this whole period it’s letting us down.

Right now, through the first week and all the way to the 16th of August, the surf is flat. We’re looking at a massive gap with no decent waves. The swell heights are tiny – 0.3 ft to 2 ft at best, with short, weak periods (6 to 10 seconds) and very low energy, mostly under 100. The combined swell energy is barely a whisper, often single digits. For example, on the 2nd of August it’s just 1, and even the “best” day, the 8th of August, only gets up to 96–101. That’s weak energy, mate.

Wind is offshore every day – from the E, ESE, or ENE – so it’s clean, but there’s nothing to ride. The offshore breeze is fresh to strong, sometimes hitting 25 mph on the 14th of August, which makes paddling hard, but even then the swell is only 0.7 ft. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.

Cane Garden Bay is a sheltered point break that needs a northerly swell to work, and the optimum swell direction is from the north. We do see some tiny pulses from the NNE and ENE, but they’re weak, short-period, and nowhere near enough. It’s a spot that’s rarely breaking, and this forecast confirms it.

Honestly, if you’re looking to surf, this is a blank run. There’s nothing worth wetting a board for. The setup might interest a kite surfer on a breezy day, but for us paddle surfers, it’s a long wait. Hang in there – forecasts can change.

Rusty.
