The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it.
Look, I’ve been staring at the charts for Cabo Blanco and I’ve got to be honest with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. This is a world-class point break, but over the next 16 days, we are looking at a whole lot of flat, weak, and messy conditions. There’s not a single standout session in the whole run. The swell is tiny, the wind is almost always cross or cross-off, and the energy just isn’t there.
For the first week, from Saturday the 18th through to Friday the 24th of July, it’s pretty bleak. We’re talking wave heights mostly under 2 ft, with periods all over the shop from 3 seconds up to 21 seconds, but the energy is laughable. The combined energy rarely hits triple digits, maxing out at a weak 99 (still weak). The 21-second period swell on the 20th is a long-period groundswell, but it’s only 0.7 ft – that’s not going to wrap around the point. The wind is a constant problem, either a cross-off or a cross, with speeds of 9 to 25 mph. The water is a very unusual 74°F, which is 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year.
The second week, starting Saturday the 25th of July, is more of the same. There’s a brief moment of glass on the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July, with 0.7 ft of 13-second-period swell, but the energy is a pathetic 17 (weak). The next few days see tiny 0.7 ft swells from the WNW with periods around 12 seconds, but the wind is either cross or onshore. Even into the first couple of days of August, the pattern holds: tiny, weak swells and messy winds.
This is a blank run, plain and simple. For a spot like Cabo Blanco, this is just how it goes sometimes. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you have a kite, the afternoon seabreezes on the 22nd and 23rd of July might be your only fun, but for a paddle surfer, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
