Alright, Rusty here. Let's be real about this next stretch of swell. Honestly, for the next 16 days, the outlook for Cabo Blanco is a tough one to sell. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out period with very little to get excited about.
From now through the 22nd of July, the surf is going to be small and messy. The first few days, through the 15th, we’re seeing tiny waves around 0.3ft to 3ft, and the wind is a constant cross-shore, which is just going to chop up any little bump that tries to form. The water is notably warm, sitting at 74°F, which is over 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a bath. The combined swell energy is pathetically weak, often in single digits (21) or low double digits, with a few spikes to 29 or 56, but that’s still nothing to write home about. The swell is short-period, sloppy, and just not doing anything.
Things get a little more interesting late in the window. Around the 20th of July, we start to see a pulse of longer-period energy from the NW, with periods hitting 20 seconds and energy levels creeping up to 100 (from 100 to 140 moderate energy). That’s a groundswell, but it’s still small – only around 1ft to 1ft. The problem is, the wind is still a cross-shore mess, so it’s going to be lumpy. This is a classic case of a long-period swell that might look better on paper than it will in the water. For a point break like Cabo Blanco, the long period should help, but the lack of size and the wind will be a buzzkill.
The best on offer, and I mean the *only* standout, is the morning of Thursday, July 23rd. The wind swings to a light cross-offshore, the forecast reads "clean". The swell is still small at 1ft, but it’s a clean, long-period NW swell (17 seconds) with moderate energy (73). It’s the only window where the wind is right. For a peaky, advanced point, this is the moment to bring a longboard. It’s a quiet, glassy morning, but crowds are likely at this spot.
Beyond that, the 24th and 25th see the energy drop back down, and the wind goes back to cross-shore. It’s not looking good.
So, overall, it’s a grim run. The good news is that Cabo Blanco is a fairly consistent spot, so this blank run is a bit of a fluke, and forecasts can change. But for now, don’t hold your breath. The only real window is that Thursday morning on the 23rd.
Rusty.
