The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, this 16-day window is a real struggle for Cabo Blanco. The water is a whopping 74°F, which is 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s genuinely unusual and feels like bathwater. But the problem is, we’ve got a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. The first few days are a write-off. From Tuesday the 14th right through the end of the first week, the swell is tiny, the wind is almost always cross or cross-onshore, and the energy is weak. You’re looking at 0.3ft to 4ft of short-period, messy stuff with combined energy values mostly under 100 (41, 22, 49). It’s all “poor surf conditions” with lumpy cross-chop.
There’s a gap of about a week before we see a slight shift, but it’s not a rescue mission. Around the 20th and 21st of July, the swell direction swings to the WNW and NW, with periods getting interesting – we’re talking 20 to 21 seconds. That’s proper long-period groundswell energy. The heights are still tiny, only 0.7ft to 1ft, but the combined energy starts to climb into the moderate range (97, 99). The problem is that the wind is still a cross-shore mess, and the wave comment is still “poor surf conditions.” A long-period swell this small at a point break like Cabo Blanco might give you a few clean lines if you’re patient, but the wind will ruin it.
Later in the second week, around the 22nd and 23rd, we get a couple of mornings with a clean cross-off wind from the S. That’s the best we’ll see. The swell is still only 1.0ft to 1ft from the NW, with periods dropping to 17-18 seconds. The energy is moderate (78, 75, 113). It’s not going to be a classic, but if you’re desperate, those clean mornings are your best bet. The wind is light, so the surface will be glassy.
Other than that, the whole run is a dud. There’s no standout day, no big swell to get excited about. If you’re a kite surfer, the cross-shore winds on the afternoons might look more interesting than the paddle-in surf. But for us surfers, this is a lean period. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but right now, I’d be finding something else to do.
Rusty.
