The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking flat. Real flat. We've got a long stretch of nothing happening at Cabo Blanco, so don't get your hopes up for any proper waves.
The whole 16-day window is a write-off for decent surf. We're looking at a period that starts with essentially nothing on Sunday the 16th and just stays that way. There's a glimmer of ankle-biters on a few afternoons, but nothing that's worth paddling out for. It's a real bummer, but it happens.
We do have one bright spot on the water temp, mind you. The ocean is sitting at a balmy 77°, which is a massive 11° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's not just a little warm, that's like bathwater. So if you're just keen for a swim, it'll be perfect, but for surfing, you'll be doing more floating than riding.
The first day, Sunday the 16th, has a tiny 0.3ft northwest groundswell, but it's buried under a 15 mph cross-offshore wind in the morning, and then it gets worse in the afternoon with a 28 mph cross-shore breeze and a bumpy 4ft of windswell. So it's a mess. The energy is weak, only hitting 6 in the morning, and it's just not gonna produce anything.
The whole first week is like this. We see little pulses of 0.3ft swells, mostly from the northwest with a longer period, but they're all getting chopped up by cross-shore winds. Tuesday morning the 18th is clean with a light 9 mph cross-offshore breeze, but there's still no swell to speak of. The energy reading is a paltry 6.
Even when we get a bit of southwesterly windswell in the afternoons, like Thursday the 20th with a 3ft swell from the southwest, it's got a period of just 4 seconds. That's pure chop, and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-shore. It's junk. This is the kind of day where you'd have more fun on a kiteboard than a surfboard, honestly.
The pattern just keeps repeating itself through the second week. Mornings are often cleaner with lighter winds, but there's no swell. Afternoons have a little more size, but the period stays under 5 seconds and the wind is almost always blowing cross or cross-onshore. This is not a recipe for anything you'd want to paddle out into.
There are a few days with slightly longer period energy from the northwest, like Friday the 28th with a 0.7ft swell and a 12 second period, but the energy is still weak, registering just 14. It's a tease. On Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st, we see a bit of southwest windswell, but again, the period is down around 4-5 seconds, which is just bumpy, disorganized surf.
Even the point break at Cabo Blanco, which is usually a good bet for handling lined-up swell, can't do anything with this. It's exposed to the northwest, but the weak, short-period southwesterly pulses are just hitting it wrong. There's just no power in the water.
So, the long and short of it is: leave the board in the car. The outlook is poor with no standout days. The energy levels in the water are weak, mostly under 50, for the entire period. It's a long, flat stretch, and a blank run like this is just part of the deal sometimes. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on things, but for now, I'd find something else to do.
This is Rusty, signing off.
