Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks at Brookings.
For the first several days, Brookings/South Jetty has a lot of messy, short-period swell, 5 to 7 ft, but the wind is constantly side or side-onshore, making it choppy. Nothing worth paddling out for until we get further into the forecast.
The first real standout hits on Wednesday July 9th into the afternoon. The swell jumps to 10 ft from the NW, and the wind switches to a clean cross-off. That’s a big, heavy wave – combined energy is 1631 (strong), but it’s a beach/jetty setup and the period is only 7 seconds, so it’s going to be steep and dumpy. Expert only.
You get another big clean window on Wednesday July 16th and Friday July 18th, with waves 10 to 12 ft from the NW and clean cross-off winds. Again, these are strictly for experienced surfers – short period (7-8 seconds), high energy (1541 to 1569). This is raw, powerful stuff.
The most balanced day for a strong surfer is probably Thursday July 17th morning. The swell drops to 6 ft from the NW, but the period stretches to 11 seconds – that’s proper groundswell with better shape. Energy is 1364 (moderate-strong). The wind is a moderate side-shore, not perfect, but it’s the most surfable of the bigger days.
Water temp is running a cold 51°F , which is about 5°F below normal – that’s significantly colder than average, so you’ll need a thick suit and booties.
For the first week, it’s pretty flat quality-wise. Once we hit the second week, there are a couple of big, clean, expert-only windows. If the swell is over 8 ft here and the period is short, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
Rusty.
