The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a good look at what's cookin' for Brookings.
There’s a massive gap here to start, so don’t bother paddlin’ out just yet. We’ve got nothing worth mentionin’ until August 23rd, and even then it’s a bit of a write-off for a while. The first couple of weeks are lookin’ pretty slim pickin’s, with a lot of small, weak swell and cross-shore wind. It’s gonna take until the start of September for the ocean to wake up. The water temp at the start is runnin’ a notch warmer than normal at 59.5°F, so it’s not totally winterized yet.
The real standout, and I mean the *only* one worth settin’ your alarm for, is September 2nd. We finally get some decent size rollin’ in. On Wednesday the 2nd, the Brookings/South Jetty is gonna see a solid 10.0ft of swell from the northwest. The combined energy is a beefy 1312 which is serious power. Now, the period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit of a wind-swell bump, but with gentle cross-shore breezes keepin’ it clean, it’s gonna be a punchy, rippable day. Fair warning though, that’s expert-only territory, the thing’s gonna be thumping. Only the experienced crew should be out there.
The morning before that, on the 2nd, it’s a smaller 5.6ft from the NW with a 9-second period and a light cross-onshore wind. That’s a more manageable size, but the jetty can get a bit chunky and the wind isn’t perfect. Sunday August 23rd afternoon also has a mention with an 8.2ft NW swell and clean cross-offshore wind, but the energy is 940 and it’s early in the window, so treat it as a potential warm-up.
Beyond that, from September 4th onward, we get a return to a long-period SSW groundswell, which is nice and clean but small, sittin’ around 3.3ft. The moderate cross-off winds on the 4th afternoon will have the lines lookin’ good for a cruiser session, but it’s no barnstormer. So, the whole run is a long wait for one big day. If you’re lookin’ for a paddle, wait for that September 2nd.
Stay wet.
