The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming our way over the next couple of weeks.
We’re looking at a pretty drawn-out run of average, marginal conditions for the most part. The swell sticks around, but the wind is a constant problem, and the surf quality is just never quite on. There’s a real standout waiting for us right at the tail end, but you’ll have to be patient.
Alright, let’s start with the first week. From Sunday, July 19th, right through until the end of the month, it’s a frustrating story. We’ve got a consistent supply of swell from the SW and SSW, but the wind is a persistent cross-off from the ESE or SE at 19 mph, sometimes 16 mph. That’s a fresh breeze, and it’s keeping the surface messy. The water temp is sitting at 81°, which is about normal for this time of year, so that’s one thing you don’t have to worry about.
The wave energy fluctuates, but it’s mostly moderate. On Monday, July 20th, the combined energy hits 2078 (moderate), and by the afternoon it’s up to 2313 with a 7 ft SSW swell, but that’s still with a cross-off wind. The period is a long 16 seconds, which is proper groundswell, but the wind is just not cooperating. For the next few days, the swell drops back to around 3 ft to 5 ft, and the energy dips into the 600s and 700s (weak to moderate). The wind doesn’t let up, so it’s all just a bit of a grind.
There’s a brief flicker of hope on Sunday, July 26th, morning. The wind goes offshore from the ESE at 19 mph, and we get a 5 ft SE swell, but the period is a short 8 seconds. That’s windswell, not groundswell, and it’s not going to hold much shape. The energy is only 727 (weak). It’s surfable, but not a standout.
The real standout is the first couple of days of August. It’s still a week and a half away, so treat it with a bit of caution, but the numbers are mouthwatering. On Saturday, August 1st, the swell builds from the SSW. The morning sees 7 ft at 18 seconds, and the combined energy is 3120 (strong). By the afternoon, it’s 8 ft at 17 seconds, with energy at 3573 (strong). This is significant, expert-level swell. The wind is still cross-off at 16 mph, but the quality of the swell is just so much bigger and more powerful. Sunday, August 2nd, keeps it going with 8 ft to 7 ft and energy over 3000 (strong).
Then, Monday, August 3rd, is the absolute peak. The morning sees a 4 ft swell, but don’t let the size fool you – the period is a massive 21 seconds, and the combined energy is 3258 (strong). The wind is offshore from the ESE at 16 mph, and the forecast actually calls for excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets bigger with a 8 ft SSW swell at 19 seconds and energy of 4834 (very strong). That’s the session to aim for. This is a long-period groundswell, so it’ll be lining up well at Bingin, a reef break that’s consistently exposed to the SW swell. It’s an advanced wave, and it’s likely to be crowded, but for the crew who can handle it, Monday, August 3rd, is the real deal.
For the rest of the time, it’s mostly a waiting game. The wind is just too strong and onshore to let the consistent swell shine. If you’re a kitesurfer, the whole period with the 19 mph cross-off winds and constant swell will look pretty interesting, but for paddling, it’s a tough run until August.
Rusty.
