The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag for the region, with a lot of days where the wind is just a bit too strong and the conditions aren’t quite falling into place. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming, but you’ll have to be patient and pick your windows carefully.
The period kicks off on Monday, 20 July, with a medium-sized swell at Bingin, a reef break. The water is sitting at 80°, which is about average for the time of year, so no need to dig out the winter rubber. The combined swell energy is strong, clocking in at 2087, but the problem is that fresh 19 mph cross-offshore wind from the ESE is making things a bit lumpy. The swell is 5 ft from the SW with a long 14-second period, which is a proper groundswell, but that wind is a real buzzkill. The whole opening week, from Monday through to Friday, is plagued by this same gritty wind. The swell drops off a bit by Wednesday and Thursday (down to 3 ft - 4 ft), and the energy dips to around 685-898, which is moderate. The period jumps to 17 seconds on Friday the 24th, but with only 3 ft - 3 ft of swell, it’s a tease.
The best chance for a proper session in the first week looks like Saturday, 25 July. The morning sees a shift to a true offshore wind from the ESE at 19 mph, and the swell is a clean 4 ft from the SSW with a 15-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 1079. This is the one to aim for – it’s not a monster, but the offshore wind will make it glassy and fun.
Then we hit a bit of a rough patch. Sunday, 26 July, the wind goes back to a strong cross-off, and the swell turns to a short-period, choppy 6 ft from the SE (only 8 seconds, energy 734). This is more of a wind-slop situation, and honestly, it looks like it might be better for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The following Monday, 27 July, is similar with a 5 ft SE short-period swell and offshore wind, but the energy is low (433) and the afternoon gets messy.
The second week settles down a bit. From Tuesday, 28 July, through to Friday, 31 July, the wind drops to a moderate breeze (12 - 16 mph) and the swell stays around 3 ft to 4 ft, but it’s a long-period groundswell again (14-18 seconds). The energy is moderate (684-1452). It’s clean, but it’s small. The real standout in the second week is Sunday, 2 August. The morning brings a moderate offshore breeze from the ESE at 16 mph and a solid 6 ft swell from the SW with a 15-second period. The combined energy is strong at 1480. This is the best-looking swell of the whole forecast, and with offshore winds, it’ll be clean. The 6 ft is a bit big for beginners, but for the experienced crew, this is a proper session. Just remember, crowds are a real possibility here, so get there early.
So, if you’re asking me, the two best windows are the morning of Saturday, 25 July, and the morning of Sunday, 2 August. The rest of the time, you’ll be scratching for a decent wave.
Rusty.
