The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming down the pipe for this stretch of coast.
Alright, so the big picture is that we've got a solid run of swell on the cards, but it’s going to be a bit of a mixed bag for quality. For the most part, we're looking at clean conditions with a persistent cross-offshore breeze, which will keep the surface tidy, but the real standout windows are few and far between. The water’s sitting at about 78°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no nasty surprises there.
We start off Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th with some decent size, around 6ft to 8ft, coming from the SSW and SW. The period is a long 16 to 18 seconds, which is proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is strong, reading between 2883 and 4113. The wind is a clean cross-off from the ESE, so the surf will look good, but the forecast is calling it marginal. It’s a bit of a teaser, honestly. The real magic looks like it might pop on Thursday the 20th afternoon. The wind swings offshore, and we’ve got a 8ft SW swell with a 16-second period and a combined energy of 3107. That’s the best looking window in the first week for a proper session.
Friday the 21st through to Monday the 24th sees the size drop a touch, hanging around 5ft to 8ft, but the wind stays cross-off. The energy is still strong, but nothing is really screaming "go now." The consistency is there, but the quality is just okay.
Heading into the second week, things get a bit more interesting. We see a pulse of bigger surf around Sunday the 30th of August, with a 7ft to 8ft SW swell and an 18-second period. The combined energy jumps back up to 3546. But look, the wind on the morning of the 30th is a light cross-shore from the south at only 3 mph, which is almost glassy. That’s a beautiful setup for a reef break like Bingin, where that long-period groundswell will wrap in perfectly.
Then, the real standout of the entire forecast window is staring us in the face for Tuesday the 1st of September. We’ve got a solid 10ft SW swell rolling in, with a 17-second period and a combined energy of 4635 – that’s some serious grunt. The wind is a gentle cross-off from the ESE at 9 mph. That’s proper, heavy, experienced surfer territory. It’s a bit over a week away, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but if that holds, it will be the day to circle on the calendar. The afternoon on the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd are still holding at 8ft to 10ft, so there’s plenty of swell around, but that Tuesday morning is the pick.
Bingin is an advanced reef break, and it’s consistent and fairly exposed to the swell, which is why it’s handling all this energy. Crowds are often a factor here, and with a run like this, you can expect it to be busy, especially on the best days.
So, to sum it up: the first week is about picking your moment, with Thursday afternoon being the best bet. The second week has a massive pulse arriving around the 1st of September, which is the real standout. For the average punter, the smaller days around the 5ft mark will be more manageable, but the 10ft days are for the crew who know what they’re doing.
Rusty.
