The Lowdown

G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Bingin.

We've got a solid run of swell coming through, but it's really a tale of two halves. The first few days are a bit tricky with tide and wind issues, but there's a couple of standout windows that'll light up.

Water temps are sitting at 78°, which is only about a degree cooler than the long-term average for this time of year, so pretty much what you'd expect—no need to dig out the steamer.

Thursday, the 20th, kicks off with a thumping 8 ft SW groundswell, carrying a massive 3737 units of energy. The wind is a cross-off ESE breeze at 16 mph, which should keep things clean. But the forecast is calling it marginal due to questionable tide. This is a spot for the crew who know what they're doing—it's a reef break, strictly advanced.

Friday, the 21st, is similar. The morning sees the swell drop to 5 ft, but the afternoon brings it back up to 8 ft from the SSW, with a long 17-second period. Still, the tide is the issue.

Now, Saturday, the 22nd of August, is where it gets interesting. The morning session is the clear standout. We've got a 7 ft SSW groundswell (period 16 seconds, energy 2427) and the wind is straight offshore from the ESE at 16 mph. That's a recipe for perfection at this reef. The forecast says excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is your best bet for the whole first week. The afternoon sees a shift to cross-off, so get it early.

Sunday the 23rd holds clean 6 ft SSW swell, but it's back to cross-off winds. The quality is still there, but it's not the stand-out morning. The energy remains solid in the 2000s.

From Monday the 24th, the swell starts to slowly ease and the energy drops into the 1000s. The wind stays cross-off from the SE at 13-16 mph, so the lineup stays clean, but the power fades. The score drops, and it's marginal until the next pulse.

We hit a bit of a lull mid-week. Thursday the 27th morning is super small at 2 ft, even though it's a very long-period 20-second swell—that's a long wait for a small wave. Not much to write home about.

But then, Friday the 28th of August rolls in and the energy cranks back up. The morning brings a 7 ft SSW swell (16-second period) with 3031 units of energy, and a light SSE breeze at 9 mph. The forecast calls it excellent for experienced surfers again. This is your second big standout. The reef will be handling that size well.

Saturday the 29th is still worth a mention. The morning offers a 6 ft SW swell with a light 6 mph SSE breeze, and the forecast is excellent. It's a bit smaller, but the wind is so light it'll be glassy.

The following week, from the 31st of August through to the 3rd of September, we see a consistent run of chest to head-high SSW to SW swell, with periods mostly in the 15-19 second range. The energy is back up in the 2000s. Winds are generally light to moderate cross-off from the SSE or SE. The morning of the 1st of September is another excellent call with a 7 ft SW swell and a light 6 mph breeze. The 2nd of September has a glassy morning with a 6 ft SW swell and a light 3 mph SW cross-on, but the afternoon cleans up with a 6 mph cross-off and excellent conditions.

The 4th of September sees the energy drop into the 1000s with a shorter period, and the threat of a storm, so the quality fades.

Overall, if you're keen and you've got the skills, the best windows are first thing Saturday the 22nd of August and Friday the 28th of August. Get in the water.

Rusty.
