The Lowdown
Alright, grab a seat and listen up. Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you – the next 16 days are a real mixed bag of frustration for this stretch. The only option we’ve got on the cards is Accra Beach - Rockley Beach, and honestly, it’s not looking like it’s going to deliver much for a wave rider.
The pattern overall is pretty flat and messy. There’s a long gap of nothing worth paddling out for from the start. The first few days are just poor surf conditions with a cross-shore wind that’s making a mess of things. The swell is tiny and weak, with a combined energy that barely gets above 200 (237) on the first Sunday morning, and it drops off fast. By Monday and Tuesday it’s down to almost nothing – 35 on Monday afternoon, 32 on Tuesday morning. That’s just a flat, lumpy ocean.
We’re looking at a stretch of several days where there’s really no recommendation. The water temp is about 84°F on that first Sunday morning – that’s about normal for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The wind is a constant problem. It’s mostly a cross-shore breeze from the east or ESE, blowing at 18 to 18 mph, which keeps the surface lumpy and chopped up. A couple of moments on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon we get a “clean” description, but the swell is so small it’s barely a ripple. You’d be better off with a floatie than a board.
There’s a bit of a bump in energy around the 31st of August, with swell hitting 4 ft from the SE, and the combined energy climbs to 300, but it’s still crossed up and messy. By the 1st of September, the swell gets bigger – 6 ft on Tuesday morning with a combined energy of 477 – but that’s still a short-period, 8-second windswell, not a clean groundswell. And it’s still cross-shore. At 6 ft, it’s getting a bit much for beginners, but it’s not a wave you’d want to paddle into with that chop.
The biggest standouts on the whole 16-day run are the 6th of September – Sunday morning and afternoon – with 7 ft from the east and a combined energy hitting 628-687. That’s moderate to strong wave energy, but it’s coming with a fresh cross-shore wind at 22 mph, and the period is only 8 seconds. That’s a lumpy, powerful mess. At 7 ft, it’s too big for beginners and only worth a look for experts who don’t mind a beatdown. The break is exposed and inconsistent, so it’s not a reliable spot to bank on. And with crowds possible, you might be fighting for a piece of a sloppy wave.
Overall, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the constant wind and the short-period, cross-shore swell. The best bet is to keep an eye on the 6th of September if you’re an expert and don’t mind a rough session, but don’t get your hopes up. The rest of the window is a write-off.
Rusty.
