The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s heading our way for Accra Beach – Rockley Beach over the next couple weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: this stretch is lookin’ pretty average for a good long while. We’ve got some small slop to start, but nothing really worth paddling out for. The real story here is a handful of days that might just offer something, but you’d have to be keen and keep expectations in check.
We kick off on Tuesday, the 18th of August, with tiny 2ft swell from the southeast, only 8 seconds between waves, and a cross-onshore breeze that’s whippin’ up a bit of chop. Combined swell energy’s weak at 70 – total fluff. That carries through Wednesday the 19th too, still mostly poor surf with clean conditions on the morning thanks to an offshore cross-off wind, but the swell’s too small and short-period to do much.
Then on Thursday the 20th of August, early morning we get a spike: 7ft swell from the east, period 8 seconds, and a cross-off wind that keeps it clean. The combined energy jumps to 512 – moderate for sure – but the wave comment flags it as marginal. That’s a big lump for beginners, and with the short period, it’ll be a bit messy. Still, if you’re an experienced surfer lookin’ for something punchy, that’s the closest we get to a highlight in the first week.
After that, we slide into a long dry spell. From Friday the 21st through to Monday the 24th of August, it’s tiny or flat, with onshore and cross-shore winds and combined energy sittin’ below 100 most of the time, even droppin’ to zero on Sunday the 23rd.
Tuesday the 25th of August shows a glimmer: morning sees a tiny 3ft SE swell with 6-second period and a light cross-off breeze from the west-northwest. Clean and glassy – that’s nice – but the energy is only 59, and the waves are short and weak. In the afternoon, the swell pushes to 7ft from the east, 9 seconds, and combined energy rockets to 654 – that’s strong energy! But the wind swings onshore from the south, so it’s gonna be messy and hard to surf. At that size, this is for experts only, and with onshore wind, honestly, it might be more interestin’ for the kite crew than us paddle folk.
Wednesday the 26th through Sunday the 30th of August is a mixed bag of cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions, with swell bouncing between 1.0ft and 7ft but always accompanied by fresh winds that keep things poor. The standout in energy comes again on Thursday the 27th of August morning with 7ft from the east, 7-second period, and cross-off wind – clean, but 462 energy and short period mean it’s a powerful but unruly wave. Again, not for beginners.
Monday the 31st of August and Tuesday the 1st of September bring a bit more size – 6ft from the east, period around 8-9 seconds, with cross-off winds on the Tuesday afternoon keepin’ it clean. Combined energy sits in the 400-500 range, so there’s punch there. But the surf reports still call it poor – probably due to the short period and cross-shore chop.
Best on offer? If you’re an expert, I’d circle Thursday the 20th of August morning for that 7ft east swell with clean cross-off wind and moderate energy – it’s the most promising. And then for a session when it’s not so big, Tuesday the 25th of August afternoon has strong energy (654) but onshore wind, so it’s a gamble. Water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothin’ wild to report there.
This break (Accra Beach – Rockley Beach) is inconsistent and exposed to south swells, with crowds sometimes – so you might have some company, but in this patchy run, that’s probably not the issue. Truth is, this is a lean period, and the forecasts can change. A lot of these days are clean or cross-off, so if the swell direction shifts a bit, we could be in luck. But as it sits, it’s mostly flat to marginal. I’d keep an eye on Thursday the 27th of August too – that morning’s 7ft east swell with clean conditions could surprise. Otherwise, it’s a quiet run, mate.
