The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one for Yoff Island. It’s a reef break that’s consistent and exposed to the NW, but for the first week and a half, the wind and swell just aren’t playing ball. We’ve got a long wait ahead, with nearly nine days of mostly poor conditions before anything decent shows up.

The first real glimmer comes on Friday morning, 7 August. The swell is tiny at 2 ft from the north, with a short period of 9 seconds, but the wind is glassy – dead calm at 0 mph. The wave energy is weak (56), and it’s described as “surfable but very ordinary,” but that glassy clean surface is a rare treat. It’s not a standout, but it’s the only calm moment in a choppy stretch.

Then we hit a dry spell until Wednesday, 12 August, when the swell picks up. On Wednesday afternoon, the swell hits 5 ft from the NNW at 8 seconds, with a moderate energy (358). The wind is a gentle cross-shore at 9 mph, leaving a slight cross-chop. It’s marginal, but it’s the first sign of life.

The real standout comes on Thursday morning, 13 August. The swell is 5 ft from the NNW, period 9 seconds, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SSW at 9 mph. The combined energy is moderate (397), and the conditions are clean. This is the best session on offer – the waves have some shape, the wind is favourable, and the reef should handle the longer period nicely. If you’re going to paddle out, make it Thursday morning.

After that, the wind turns messy again. Friday 14 August sees a long-period 16-second swell from the SW, but it’s only 2 ft and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and weak (351). The following days are a mix of poor and marginal, with a few cleaner moments on Sunday 16 August afternoon (5 ft, NW, 7 seconds, cross-offshore wind) and Monday 17 August (5 ft, NNW, 9 seconds, cross-offshore). But the energy is a bit low, and the wind isn’t quite as good as that Thursday morning.

The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Overall, don’t get your hopes up for the first week. The only real window is Thursday 13 August morning – that’s your best bet. The rest is a waiting game.

Rusty.
