The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk this one out. It’s a long, dry spell for the most part, and the one good moment is way out at the end of the outlook. Everything else is choppy, blown-out, or just flat. Here’s the rundown.

The only spot we’ve got is Baie des Carpes, a reef break that wants a clean NW swell. Problem is, from September 12th right through the 23rd, the wind is always cross-on or onshore, and the waves are junk. On the 12th, you’ve got 1.2m of NNW swell, 8-second period, and 187 combined energy—moderate wave energy—but it’s cross-on and messy. There’s a little bump on the 19th afternoon with 1.4m of NNW swell and 305 energy (moderate), but still cross-on and sloppy. Not worth the drive.

The one and only standout comes on September 24th, Thursday morning. The swell from the NW is only 2ft (0.7m), but the period shoots up to 13 seconds—that’s very long period groundswell, which is energy in the water. Combined energy is at 276, which is solid. The real key is the wind: light and offshore from the E, going cross-off. The wave comment calls it clean, good surf. For a reef break like this, that’s your moment. The long-period groundswell will set up nicely with offshores, giving you lined-up, proper waves. Crowds are possible here sometimes, so don’t expect to have it all to yourself. That afternoon, the wind goes glassy, but the swell drops to just 3ft (0.8m), 7-second period, with only 65 energy. Barely surfable and ordinary.

The water temp on the 12th is 85°F, which is a touch warmer than average for the year—feels nice, but not unusual.

From the 25th onward, it’s back to poor conditions. By the 27th, you get 5ft (1.6m) of NNW swell and 359 energy (moderate to strong), but it’s cross-on with moderate wind and messy. That kind of setup looks more fun for a kiteboard than a surfboard.

So bottom line: the only real window is that Thursday morning, September 24th, at Baie des Carpes. One standout in a whole lot of nothing. It’s been a rough run, but forecasts can change.

Rusty.
