The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it.

Look, I've been staring at the charts for Baie des Carpes and, to be honest, it’s a pretty quiet stretch. We've got a long run of "poor surf conditions" flagged across the entire 16-day window. The swell is coming in, sure, but the wind is just not playing ball for most of it. There’s no standout day where everything clicks perfectly; it’s going to be a case of picking the least bad option if you’re desperate for a paddle.

Starting off Wednesday the 29th, we’ve got a NNW swell around 4 ft to 4 ft with a short period of 6 to 7 seconds, meaning weak, crumbly energy (combined energy of 106 to 177). The problem? A fresh onshore wind is wrecking it. Thursday the 30th is more of the same, with a cross-onshore wind making it lumpy. The swell bumps up a touch to 5 ft and the energy gets moderate (332), but that cross-offshore angle is just going to chop it up.

Friday the 1st of August sees a cross-shore wind, still fresh, so expect more lumpy cross-chop. The swell drops slightly to 3 ft - 4 ft. Saturday the 2nd is small and weak, with a risk of thunderstorms on top. Sunday the 3rd is the one time we see a clean-ish offshore wind (WNW at 6 mph), but the swell has dropped to 2 ft of SW groundswell. It has a long period of 12 seconds and weak energy (103), which means long waits between sets at this reef. It would be clean but tiny, maybe a longboard session for the advanced crew if you’re patient.

After that, it’s back to a blur of moderate onshore and cross-onshore winds through to the 13th of August. Swell sticks around the 2 ft to 4 ft mark, mostly short period NNW windswell, so the waves will be weak and messy. A few mornings like the 10th and 13th of August show a light offshore breeze, but the swell remains short and weak, giving you crumbly, soft waves. For the whole run, the water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.

To be honest, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the persistent wind and small, poor-quality waves. There are no true standouts here. If you must go, keep expectations low and maybe bring a longboard.

Rusty.
