The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table.
Honestly, mate, this one's a tough pill to swallow. We've got a solid 16-day window ahead, but for Woodlands Beach, the ocean just isn't playing ball. The whole forecast is one long stretch of tiny, weak swell. We're talking ankle-snappers at best. The first sniff of any surf is on Wednesday the 19th, but don't get your hopes up.
The water is sitting at a warm 83.8°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so at least you won't be shivering while you're sitting there with nothing to ride.
From Wednesday the 19th all the way through to the end of the month, the predominant swell is dribbling in from the North and NNE. The waves are nothing but 0.7 ft to 1 ft of weak, short-period mush. The combined swell energy is barely a whisper, never cracking a 10 (7 on the Wednesday morning), so there's just no grunt in the water. And get this, the swell direction is coming from the North, but the optimum direction for this spot is from the NNW. So the little bit of energy we do get is angled all wrong.
Now, to be fair, the wind is often blowing clean offshore from the East, which would make for a glassy surface. But when the swell is this pathetic, clean conditions mean nothing. It's like having a perfectly waxed board and no waves to ride. The period is a pathetic 7 to 8 seconds most days—short, weak windswell.
There is one tiny glimmer at the very end. On Sunday the 30th of August and Monday the 31st, the period bumps up to 11 and 12 seconds. We finally get a hint of some longer period groundswell, and the combo energy edges up to a still-weak 21 on Monday morning. But the wave height stays stuck at 0.7 ft. It's a tease.
Looking into the first week of September, it's more of the same. Tuesday the 1st has a sniff of 0.7 ft and a 12-second period from the NNE, but with a combined energy of just 16, it's still not going to be rideable.
Woodlands Beach is an inconsistent spot, and this forecast proves why. It's a classic case of the swell direction being wrong and the size being too small to do anything. Honestly, with the persistent easterly winds and barely a ripple on the water, this setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddler. There's just nothing here to get excited about.
