The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be real with you. I’ve looked at the next couple of weeks for Woodlands Beach, and I’ve got to be straight – it’s pretty grim out there. We’re looking at a serious flat spell to start, with no real surf on offer for the first stretch. It’s not until the end of the month that we see a pulse of energy, but even then, we’re just scrapping for something ridable.
The water is sitting at a warm 84°, which is about average for this time of year, so you won't need the thick rubber, but you might need a lot of patience.
Right now, for the next several days, we've got tiny, weak waves. I'm talking ankle-biters in the 0.3ft to 0.7ft range with periods under 10 seconds. The wind is up, a fresh breeze out of the east, which is offshore and will keep the surface clean. It’s pretty, but there's absolutely no push to it. The combined energy is weak, with values in single digits most days – that tells you everything you need to know. This is a frustrating stretch.
As we head towards the end of August and into the first days of September, the swell direction swings around more to the northeast. We start to see a slight increase, with the swell nudging up to 1ft. The period also gets a bit more interesting. By the afternoon of the 26th, we see a long-period swell at 16 seconds, and while the height is still small, that's a sign of some distant groundswell trying to push in. The combined energy starts to climb into the 30s and 40s, which is still in the weak to low-moderate range, but it's something.
By the 27th and 28th of August, we've got the best of what’s on offer. Still small, mind you, but the swell is a bit more consistent at 1ft from the NE, with a period of 11-13 seconds. The wind is offshore from the east, which will keep things clean. It's not going to be a classic, but it's the most surfable window we have in this forecast. There's a brief window on the 2nd of September where the wind gets strong offshore and clean, but it might be a bit of a fight to get out.
Honestly, this is a test of dedication. There are no standout days, just a slow, meandering increase in the swell towards the end of the month. The best bet is to keep your eyes on the 27th and 28th, when there might be a few fun, clean little runners on offer. For anything better, we're going to have to wait for a change in the broader weather pattern.
Rusty, signing off.
