Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Woodlands Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, this is a tough stretch to get excited about. The entire 16-day outlook is plagued by tiny swell. We’re looking at a whole lot of flat days with waves barely reaching 0.3ft to 1ft. The combined wave energy is desperately weak, with most readings sitting between 1 and 2, and the highest we see is only 18 (moderate energy) on the morning of the 9th of July. That’s just not enough to push you into a proper ride. For the first several days, through the 4th of July weekend and into the following week, there’s nothing rideable on offer. You’d be better off leaving the board in the car.
The only flicker of something happens on the 8th and 9th of July. On Wednesday the 8th, we get a tiny 0.3ft from the NE with a period of 12 seconds. The wind is strong offshore from the east at 22 to 25 mph, which keeps the surface clean but also makes it really hard to paddle into anything. The energy is still just 6 (weak). Then on Thursday the 9th, we get the best of a bad lot: 1ft from the NE with an 11-second period and combined energy of 18. Again, strong offshore winds (25 mph) will have it glassy on the face but tough to catch. This is an inconsistent break as it is, so seeing any wave at all is notable, but this is really only for the most patient of longboarders or someone with a big foamie.
Because the surf is so small, the water temperature anomaly is barely noticeable at 0.5°F above average for this time of year, so it’s about 83°F, which is fine for a paddle.
After the 9th, it trails off again right through to the end of the outlook on the 17th of July. There’s a very slight bump on the 12th with 0.7ft NNE swell and 17 energy, but with easterly cross-off winds, it just doesn’t add up to anything worth paddling out for. You might be better off kiting if you’re into that, because the wind is consistent and the waves are non-existent.
So bottom line: there is no standout. The strongest whisper of surf is Thursday the 9th of July, if you’re desperate and don’t mind fighting a strong offshore wind for a 1ft wave.
Stay patient, folks. These blank runs happen here more often than not.
