The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. Straight up, I’ve gotta be honest with you: Woodlands Beach is a write-off for the next 16 days. The guidance says it’s inconsistent and beginner-friendly, but the numbers just don’t line up. There’s nothing here worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, barely a ripple, and the combined wave energy sits at pathetic levels, never hitting anything that would get a surfer out of bed. The water’s a warm 84°, which is about normal for the time of year, but that’s the only nice thing I can say.
Friday the 21st kicks off with a 0.7 ft swell from the north at a short 7 seconds. There’s a fresh 19 mph easterly blowing offshore, so the surface is clean, but there’s no power behind it. The energy is just 7 (weak). That’s a flat spell. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are the same story: 0.7 ft, north-northeast, still no real push. The wind stays offshore, but it’s all show and no go.
Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 26th don’t get any better. The swell height drops to 0.3 ft, and the period stays short, even hitting 16 seconds on the 26th, but the swell is so tiny it doesn’t matter. The energy creeps up to 18 (weak) on Wednesday morning, but a 0.3 ft wave with a 16-second period is just a long-period bump in the ocean. Not surfable.
Thursday the 27th sees a slight lift to 1 ft from the northeast with a 13-second period. The combined energy reaches 52 (weak), the best of the whole forecast, but that’s like praising the smallest ripple in a puddle. The wind is offshore, so it’s clean, but you’d be hard-pressed to get a ride. Friday the 28th holds at 1 ft, energy at 47 (weak), still northeast. Still not worth it.
From Saturday the 29th right through to the end of the forecast on Saturday the 5th of September, the swell hangs around 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft, with periods that vary but never any real size. The wind is mostly offshore, keeping the surface silky, but there’s nothing to surf. The energy levels are all below 30 (weak), and the wave comment on every single record is “poor surf conditions.”
So, there you have it. A solid 16-day blank. Woodlands Beach is a beginner spot, and it’s inconsistent at the best of times, but this run is just dead. The forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay this poor forever, but for now, leave the board at home. If you’re desperate, you could watch the horizon, but there’s nothing coming.
Rusty.
