The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a long dry spell. Woodlands Beach is the only spot on the radar, and for the first eight days there’s just nothing doing. We’re looking at a gap from now until the 25th of August with no real surf to speak of. Tiny little waves and mostly poor conditions – it’s a frustrating start.
Now, things finally start to wake up around Tuesday the 25th of August. The morning brings a solid pulse of 6ft swell from the ENE, with a nice long 12-second period. That’s groundswell, folks. The combined energy hits 892 (moderate), so there’s some real push behind it. Winds are a moderate cross-offshore from the S at 12 mph, keeping things clean. This is the standout window. Woodlands Beach is an inconsistent spot normally, so when it does fire, you gotta be on it. The water’s sitting at 84°F, which is about average for this time of year. The crowd factor is “sometimes” busy, so you might get a few others out, but it’s worth the company. Swell direction from the ENE is a good match for the break’s optimum NNW exposure, so it should wrap in nicely. Be aware, though – at 6ft, it’s a bit much for beginners, but for the rest of us, this is the one.
The afternoon of the 25th drops to 5ft from the same direction, period 11 seconds, energy at 497. Still decent, but the wind swings to a cross-shore from the SSW at 12 mph, and the report says “poor surf conditions” with a cross-chop. So the morning is definitely the call.
After that, we’re back to small stuff. Wednesday the 26th morning has 2ft from the NE with a 10-second period, light offshore winds from the ESE at 16 mph, but the energy is only 79 (weak). It’s surfable but ordinary. The rest of the week stays tiny, with waves under 3ft, and mostly cross-offshore winds. The 27th and 28th see a slight bump in energy to around 109 and 113 (weak to moderate), but still with 2ft to 3ft waves from the NNE. The 27th morning has a moderate offshore wind from the E at 16 mph, so it’s clean, but it’s just not enough wave to get excited about.
Into the final days of August and first of September, we’re back to knee-high dribble. Winds get strong offshore at times, but with waves only 0.7ft to 1ft, it’s a skunk session. The 31st of August sees 25 mph winds from the E, which is strong offshore – hard to paddle into, and no push to ride.
So, bottom line: the only real window to paddle out is the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August. That’s your best shot. After that, it’s a waiting game. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, I’d be cleaning the wax off the board.
Rusty.
