The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s cut to the chase: this coastline is flat-lining. We’ve got a 16-day window, but the first real chance to surf doesn’t come until Friday, August 1st. Before that, it’s a long stretch of tiny, gutless swell and messy wind. The water is sitting at 68° – that’s a good 7° warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual. Feels like a warm bath, but there’s nothing to ride.
The only glimmer of hope is on Friday morning, August 1st at Wimereux. We’ll see a little pulse of swell from the NNE, coming in around 3ft with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is only moderate (56), so it’s not going to pack a punch. The wind will be cross-shore, so expect a bit of chop, but it’s the best we’ll see all outlook. The swell direction is from the NNE, and this spot works best from the WSW, so it’s not a perfect fit, but it’s all we’ve got. It’s a small, short-period wave that’ll be messy. This is a beginner-friendly reef, fairly consistent, but crowds will be likely. If you’re desperate for a paddle, this is your window.
The rest of the 16 days are a total write-off. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the waves are too weak to bother with. Honestly, for the next couple of weeks, you’re better off leaving the boards at home. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, given the onshore winds and bumpy conditions. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a blank run.
Rusty.
