The Lowdown

Right, grab a seat. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Wariruri is cooking up for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s a serious standout waiting for you if you’ve got the skills.

First things first, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a slow start. We’ve got a lot of days where the wind is just too strong and the wave quality is poor, so we’re not talking about a run of good days. The opening weekend (Sunday, August 9th and Monday, August 10th) is pretty much a write-off for a fun paddle. The wind is howling from the east at 19 to 31 mph, and with the swell hanging around 6 ft to 8 ft, it’s mostly just a messy, blown-out situation. The water temp is sitting at 82°F, which is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit needed.

The real standout, the only one worth getting properly excited about, lands on Saturday, August 15th and into Saturday afternoon. Now, wind forecasts a fortnight out can change, so keep an eye on it, but right now it looks like a proper session. We’re looking at a solid 10 ft swell from the ENE with a period of 10 seconds. That’s a decent groundswell, heading into the optimum northerly direction for the break (Wariruri is an exposed beach and reef setup). The combined energy is off the charts at 1884 for the morning and 1962 for the afternoon. That’s very strong, so only for experienced surfers. The wind turns offshore out of the NE in the afternoon at 16 mph, which will clean it right up. For a spot that can get a crowd sometimes, that might be the window to score.

After that, it drops back down. The following Sunday and Monday offer cleaner conditions with offshore winds, but the swell is down around 5 ft to 7 ft and the periods are shorter. It's surfable, but not the event of the month. The week after that looks like a lot of strong cross-offshore winds again with a steady 5 ft to 7 ft of wind-affected swell, which really isn't doing much for the quality. There’s a long dry spell in the second week with no standout days.

To sum it up: be patient. The first week has a lot of strong winds and poor surf. If you are a solid surfer, put a pin in Saturday, August 15th. That’s the real deal. For the rest, keep the board in the car but don’t expect magic.

Rusty.
