The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it for Walkers. The honest truth is, for the next week and a half, you’re better off staying on the beach. There’s a long stretch of nothing but poor conditions from now until the end of August. The wind is blowing cross-onshore from the east, 12 to 19 mph, and the swell is a short, choppy mess. The wave energy is weak to moderate (225 to 278 combined energy), and it’s all just lumpy and cross-onshore. It’s a dry spell, and that’s par for the course here when the trades are up.
But here’s the one that’ll get your heart pumping. On Sunday, August 30th, a serious swell from the ENE rolls in at 12 feet in the morning, with a 10-second period. The wave energy is massive, hitting 2410 (combined energy). The wind is light, only 12 mph, and onshore, which would be perfect if it weren’t for the size. That’s too big for Walkers, though. Over 8 feet, it’s only for experts. This is a deep-water groundswell, and it’s going to be a beast. If you’re a proper charger, it’s your moment, but for everyone else, it’s a no-go. The water’s about 85°, which is normal for this time of year.
The next day, Monday the 31st, drops to 7 feet, but the wind swings cross-shore from the southeast, and the conditions are just marginal. Not much to work with.
After that, it’s back to the same story – poor surf with cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions into early September. The second week is flat and uninspiring. The only other glimmer is on Saturday, September 5th, when the wind goes onshore from the ENE at 9 mph with a 6-foot swell, but it’s still marginal.
So, the standout is that Sunday the 30th for the brave. For the rest of us, it’s a long wait. The ocean just isn’t giving us much.
Rusty.
