The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what we’ve got coming down the line for Redondo.
It’s a bit of a slow start, but there’s a pulse of proper swell due in the second week that we’ll be keeping an eye on. For the first week, it’s mostly small and messy, with a lot of cross-shore wind making it tough to find a clean one. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th August see a solid 7ft to 8ft SW groundswell rolling in, but the wind is a real letdown – cross-shore all the way, 9 to 16 mph, chopping things up. The combined swell energy is strong, hitting 1380 to 1819, but the wave comment is marginal. It’s going to be a bumpy ride, and honestly, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
We hit a real flat spell from Saturday 22nd through Monday 25th August. Swell drops to a paltry 1ft to 3ft, the energy is weak (around 167 to 217), and the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore. There is next to nothing to get excited about here.
Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th August are still very slow, with the swell barely creeping above 3ft. The period jumps up to 19 seconds on the 27th, which is a long-period groundswell, but with only 2ft of height, it’s just not enough to break properly. The water is flat, the energy is low, and it’s a write-off.
Now, Friday 28th and Saturday 29th August is where this forecast starts to wake up. A new SW groundswell moves in, building from 4ft to 7ft. The period holds at a nice 15 to 17 seconds, so that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy climbs right up to 1766, which is strong. The wind is a light cross-onshore breeze at 6 mph, and while it’s not glassy, it’s manageable. This is the standout window. Saturday morning 29th is the best call: 7ft SW at 15 seconds. That’s expert territory at that size, but it’s where the quality is. The break is very consistent, so there will be waves. Keep in mind the long period might make it a bit straight at the beach, but at a reef/pier setup like Redondo, it should be fine.
After that, Sunday 30th through Tuesday 1st September sees the swell back off to 4ft to 3ft, and the wind becomes a problem again, especially by Monday afternoon with a 16 mph SSE cross-shore. The energy drops off, and it’s back to marginal or poor conditions.
There’s a little bump on Wednesday 2nd September – a 4ft SW swell at 15 seconds with a light WNW breeze. It’s a promising long-range call, but keep in mind it’s over a week away so it could change.
So to sum it up: the first week is a washout. The real window is Friday 28th through Saturday 29th August. That’s the one to circle. Get on it if you can handle the size.
Rusty.
