The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Rabbit Island.

Honestly, mate, this is a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window looks pretty bleak for any decent paddle surfing. The first few days are a write-off, with no real swell to speak of and a lot of onshore or cross-off winds. From Friday the 24th through to the end of July, it’s a whole lot of flat or tiny, messy waves. The energy is just not there, with combined swell energy readings sitting at zero or in the single digits for most of that time. Even the days that show a little bit of bump, like the 5ft from the north on Friday afternoon, are let down by poor conditions and an onshore wind.

We see a few small pulses here and there, but nothing that’s going to get the heart racing. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The first real glimmer of something, and I’m using that word loosely, comes on the morning of Wednesday the 30th. It’s a tiny 3ft from the north, with a short period of 6 seconds, and cross-off winds. The combined energy is only 44. It’s not surfable, really.
Then on Thursday the 31st of July, we get a tiny 0.3ft from the north with a very long 16-second period, but the energy is a measly 5. Not enough to push a bobber.

The outlook doesn’t improve much into August. The first week of August is much of the same: flat, with just a few tiny pulses of low-energy swell. A 0.3ft from the north on the 1st and 2nd, with periods of 12 and 18 seconds, but the energy is 3 and 6 respectively. The wind is mostly cross-off, but with such small waves, it’s a non-starter. Finally, on the afternoon of Tuesday the 5th of August, we see a 4ft swell from the northwest, with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of 89. It’s the biggest swell of the whole forecast, but it’s still poor surf conditions, with a cross-off wind. The break is inconsistent and rarely breaks, which is a problem even when conditions are good. For a beginner spot, that 4ft might be a bit too much, but it’s hardly a classic.

Truth be told, there’s nothing here that’s a standout. The whole 16 days is a blank run for any decent surf. This is more normal for the area, so don’t let it get you down. Forecasts can change, but for now, you might be better off checking the wind for a kite session if you’re into that, because the paddle surfing is a no-go.

Rusty.
