Rabbit Island Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for waves around here. Honestly, the surf cupboard is almost bare, with a long stretch of nothing to get excited about. We’re looking at mostly flat, weak conditions with only a couple of minor bumps that aren't worth changing your plans for.

The first real mention of any surf comes on Saturday morning, August 29th, at Rabbit Island. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the north, with a short period of 8 seconds, so it’s a weak, local wind chop. The combined energy is a measly 65 (weak energy). The wind is a cross-offshore from the SW, so the surface will be clean, but with that size, you’re better off on a longboard or a floaty. The water is sitting at 55°F right now, which is about average for the time of year. That’s the only thing worth mentioning for the first few days.

After that, it’s a long, dry spell. From Sunday the 30th right through to the end of the first week of September, we’re looking at virtually nothing. You’ll see tiny 0.3ft to 0.7ft readings, and a lot of flat zeros. The wind does go glassy a couple of times, like on Thursday morning, September 3rd, and Friday morning, September 4th, but with no swell to work with, it’s just a perfect flat lake. It’s a tough run.

Things get a little more interesting, but still not great, on the weekend of September 5th and 6th. Saturday afternoon, September 5th, brings a 3ft swell from the NNW. The period is a short 5 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy and weak, with a combined energy of 53 (weak). The wind goes glassy, so it will look clean, but the waves will be soft and fat. Rabbit Island is an inconsistent beginner break, so this is a rare moment it might actually have a wave. It’s only for the absolute beginners on a foamie.

Then on Sunday afternoon, September 6th, the swell picks up a bit more to 4ft from the north, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 241 (moderate wave energy), so there’s a bit more push. However, the wind is a cross-offshore WSW at 12 mph, so it’ll be a bit choppy. That’s the biggest wave we see all period, but it’s still a far cry from good. It’s a bit too big for beginners, but not really big enough or clean enough for experienced surfers. It’s a messy, middling option.

The rest of the second week is a total bust. Tiny pulses, no swell, and a lot of flat days. The most notable thing is a 2ft swell on Wednesday morning, September 9th, but it’s nothing special. Honestly, the best call is to keep the board in the car and wait for the next change. There’s just nothing to get your heart pumping here.
