The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Punta Negra. It’s a reef and point setup that takes swell from the west, which is good, because that’s pretty much the only game in town for the next 16 days. The water's sitting at 70°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
To be straight with you, this outlook is a tough one. There’s really nothing to get excited about for the entire run. We’re looking at a long, flat stretch with no proper surf on offer. The first decent chance – and I mean *decent* loosely – doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 12th of August, and even then it’s just marginal, with a tiny 2ft swell from the SW. The combined energy is moderate at best around 248 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is cross-shore with a slight chop, not ideal.
From that point, things stay poor. The swell ticks up a bit around the 15th of August, hitting 3ft from the SW, with combined energy getting up into the 400s (strong wave energy), but the wind stays cross or cross-on, with moderate breezes messing up any chance of clean lines. By the 20th of August, there’s a 4ft swell from the WNW, but it’s got a short period of just 8 seconds, so it’s windswell, lacking any real push or shape. The energy is still strong (336), but it’s messy.
Honestly, there’s no standout day here. The swell directions are mostly cross to cross-onshore, the heights are small, and the wind never swings into that clean offshore we’d want from the NNE. For a spot like this, a blank run is more normal than not when the wind is stubborn. It’s not looking interesting for a paddle either – if anything, the gusty cross-shore conditions and the beach-and-reef setup might make it more interesting for a kite surfer than someone on a shortboard.
