The Lowdown

Right, listen up. Rusty here.

Alright, first things first. Over the next 16 days, the surf forecast here at Playa Tortugas is looking pretty ordinary for the most part, but there are a couple of really nice windows that could be worth a paddle. We've got a long stretch of small, weak surf, but the patterns are changing in the second week.

The water here is a scorching 90°, which is over 4° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a serious anomaly, so you’ll be surfing in a bath.

The first real hope comes on the morning of Wednesday, August 14th. The swell is only 2ft from the WSW, but the energy is building with a combined swell energy of 293. The period is a long 18 seconds, which is proper groundswell. For a river-mouth setup, that long period will mean better shaped waves. The wind is glassy with 0 mph from the ESE. This is the standout. Thursday afternoon, August 14th, is looking even better with 2ft at 18 seconds from the SW and a combined energy of 316. The wind stays glassy. This is a real potential session.

The morning of Friday, August 15th, is also a solid option with 2ft, a 16 second period, and glassy conditions. The energy is still strong at 261. Keep in mind, this spot is a river mouth, so the long period groundswell might make it break a little straight, but the clean conditions will make up for it.

Before that, from Wednesday, August 5th, through to Tuesday, August 13th, it’s a long stretch of tiny, weak surf. The swell is 1ft to 2ft, with combined wave energy reading between 55 and 199. The afternoons are consistently ruined by a cross-onshore wind. The mornings are often glassy, but the waves are too small to get excited about. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.

After the highlight on the 14th and 15th, the surf drops back down into the 1ft to 2ft range with weak energy from the 16th to the 20th of August. The mornings are often clean, but the power is just not there. It’s a waiting game again.

So, to sum it up: the entire first week is a write-off. The best bet is the morning of the 14th and the afternoon of the 14th of August, with the morning of the 15th also being a good call. That’s your window. Don't bother with the rest.

Rusty.
