The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening with Punta Blanca out in the Seven Sisters. It’s gonna be a bit of a slow burn for the next couple of weeks, but there are a couple of windows that will get the blood pumping.

Right off the bat, there’s not a lot to get excited about for the first few days. We’ve got small, weak swell and those winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, leaving the surface a bit messy. The water is sitting at a balmy 72°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s nice. But honestly, for the first week, you’re looking at mostly marginal conditions with the odd poor session mixed in. It will be a waiting game.

The first real standout pops up on Tuesday afternoon, the 25th of August. That’s when we get a jump in the combined swell energy (526) with a solid 3ft S swell starting to build in. The magic here is the light cross-offshore wind from the NW. That’s going to clean things right up for a few hours. It’s not huge, but it’s the first proper clean window we get, and on this reef and point setup, that should produce some fun, workable waves. This is your best bet for the first week.

After that, the surf sort of muddles along through the end of August and into the first days of September. The swell sticks around in the 2ft to 4ft range, but the wind keeps flicking between cross and cross-on, so it’s tough to get a truly clean ride. The combined energy dips and climbs but never really locks in with ideal wind for our break.

Now, if you can wait, the second week starts to show some real promise. Thursday the 3rd of September into Friday the 4th is where the focus should be. The wind looks light and variable, and the swell starts to ramp up. On Thursday afternoon, the combined energy hits 786 with a 3ft SW groundswell carrying a very long 19-second period. That kind of long-period energy is gold for a point-and-reef setup like Punta Blanca – it’ll wrap in nicely and offer up some proper shape, though expect longer lulls between sets. Friday holds similar energy levels (970 in the arvo) with the swell building to 4ft and still riding that long-period SW groundswell. The winds aren’t perfectly offshore, but they’re light and cross, which is good enough. This stretch looks like the best quality on the whole forecast. Beginners should note that by Friday afternoon, that 4ft swell at this break could start to push a bit beyond a comfortable level, and as it comes from the SW, the point will be working.

So, to sum it up: don’t bother paddling out until late on the 25th for a quick clean-up session. The real standout to circle on your calendar is Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th of September. That long-period SW groundswell combined with light winds should give us the best waves of the outlook.

Stay patient, and keep an eye on the sky.

Rusty.
