The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on the surf outlook for Praia da Leirosa. Gotta be straight with you—this one’s a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty grim, with no real standout sessions to get excited about. The wind is almost always coming from the N or NNW, blowing cross-onshore, and that’s keeping the surface chopped up and messy. The water’s sitting at 69°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

We kick off this Wednesday, 5th August, with a tiny 2ft swell from the W, period a short 8 seconds, and the combined energy is weak at 129. Cross-onshore winds from the N at 9 mph have it looking poor—just choppy and uninviting. That theme carries right through the rest of the week and into the next. Thursday morning, 6th August, picks up a bit to 4ft from the NNW, but the period stays short at 8 seconds, and the energy bumps to a moderate 218. Still, that cross-on wind ruins it. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all stay small, with heights under 3ft and light breezes, but the waves are wind-affected and crummy.

The swell picks up a bit around Wednesday, 12th August, with a 3ft WNW swell, period at 9 seconds, and energy at a moderate 209. The morning has a light cross-shore wind, and the comment says “marginal surf forecast,” so there’s a tiny glimmer there, but it’s not enough to recommend. Afternoon winds turn cross-onshore again, and it’s back to poor.

Things get a bit more interesting from Friday, 14th August, when the swell jumps to 5ft from the NNW, but the period is only 7 seconds, and the wind cranks up to 19 mph in the morning and 22 mph in the afternoon. That’s fresh cross-onshore and lumpy—honestly, that’s more kite-surfing territory than paddle surfing. The energy is strong at 408 on the morning, but it’s just too messy. Saturday, 15th August, sees 7ft swell from the NNW, period 8 seconds, and the energy is very strong at 601. Again, cross-on winds at 16-22 mph, so it’s lumpy and blown out. This swell is over 8ft for the experts on some days, but the wind is just not cooperating.

The second week, from 17th August onwards, stays poor. Swell drops back to 5ft and then 4ft, with persistent cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions. There’s not a single good session in the whole 16 days. The break is fairly consistent, but the wind and swell direction just don’t line up. For a beach break like this, you need clean conditions, and we’re just not getting them.

So, yeah, it’s a blank run. Leave the board in the shed for now—forecasts can change, but this one’s a long shot. Rusty signing off.
