The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for this stretch.

Alright, I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are lookin' pretty grim. The forecast is one long, sad story of cross-onshore winds and lumpy, chopped-up surf. There’s not a single standout session in the whole 16-day window. The only break on the radar is Pico Teneriffe, but it’s just not happening.

The trouble starts right away, Tuesday the 8th of September. We’ve got a 5ft easterly swell, but it’s short-period windswell at 7 seconds, and the wind is howling from the east at 18 mph. The water temp is 85°, which is about normal for this time of year, not that you’ll be in it long with that onshore mess. The combined swell energy is weak, sitting at 335, and it’s labeled “poor surf conditions.” The whole week stays locked in that pattern: swell bumps up to 6ft on Wednesday (energy hits 564 – still only moderate), but the wind is relentless, 18 mph cross-on from the east. It’s all short-period, junk.

The weekend doesn’t get any sweeter. Saturday the 12th, same story: 6ft swell, but only 7 seconds, and that east wind drops to 15 mph, but it’s still cross-on and making it choppy. The energy dips to 357. It’s all “poor surf conditions” or “poor surf conditions” – nobody’s putting a score on anything because there’s nothing to score.

The second week is a real flat-liner. From Monday the 14th, we’re dropping below 5ft, with wave heights between 2ft and 5ft, and periods are still a pathetic 6 to 8 seconds. The wind stays stubbornly cross-onshore, 12 to 18 mph. The combined energy is weak, mostly two-digit numbers like 91, 94, 86... it’s barely a ripple. Even the last few days, like the 22nd and 23rd, we see a little bump back to 5ft and 6ft, with periods hitting 8 seconds, and energy gets back into the low 300s. But it’s still the same onshore wind ruining it. The whole thing is a washout.

For a break that’s supposed to be consistent, this is a real bummer. With that much wind and short-period junk, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Don’t bother waxing the board for a while. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s just nothing to get excited about.

Rusty.
