The Lowdown

Alright, let's get into it, folks. Rusty here with the long-range look at our local stretch.

Right off the bat, the start of the forecast period is pretty flat and quiet at Moonstone. There’s just not enough to get excited about through the first few days; the swell is tiny and the conditions are poor. We’ve got a bit of a patience game on our hands here.

We start seeing some life on Thursday, August 8th. The morning session is looking interesting. The wind will be glassy, and a 3ft SSW swell with a solid 18-second period hits. We're looking at a moderate combined wave energy (408). That’s a clean, small but lined-up groundswell, perfect for cruising on a longboard. Crowds can pop here sometimes, but for these conditions everyone will be in a good mood.

The standout by a long shot is Sunday, August 9th. This is the one to circle on your calendar. The morning is looking excellent. Wind is glassy again, and we get a 4ft swell shifting around to the WNW with an 11-second period. The combined wave energy jumps to a strong 585. That’s proper. The water temp is sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don't forget the booties.

After that, the energy sticks around but the good conditions sort of fade. The following week starts to get messy, especially from Tuesday the 18th onwards. Strong WNW winds start to bull-doze the surf, creating choppy, lumpy conditions. By Thursday, August 20th, the wind is up, and we see a short-period, messy 7ft WNW windswell roll in, clocking strong energy (823). Honestly, with the forecast being so choppy with moderate cross-onshore winds and that short period, it looks more interesting for the kite surfers than for a paddle session.

So to wrap it up: the first few days are a write-off. Thursday the 8th morning is a gentle warm-up, but Sunday the 9th morning is your best bet for clean, quality waves. The second week looks promising energy-wise but the wind is likely to ruin the party until things potentially clean up again. Forecasts can change, so keep your eyes peeled.

Rusty.
