The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've gotta be straight with you – the next sixteen days are a tough watch for anyone looking for a proper surf. We've got a solid, consistent swell from the SSW and SW running the whole time, but the wind is the real killer. It's coming in from the SE at 15 to 22 mph, and it's either blowing straight on or cross-onshore for every single session. That means the ocean is going to be a mess of chop and lumpy bumps, not the clean lines we're after. It's a real shame.

Let's start with the immediate outlook. From Friday the 7th right through the weekend, we've got a solid 8 ft to 8 ft SSW swell pushing in with a period of 16 to 17 seconds. That's a proper groundswell, bringing a lot of energy (combined energy of all swells directed here is between 3588 and 2973). The wind is a fresh 15 to 19 mph onshore, so the only thing this will be good for is a bit of kite surfing muscle. The surf quality is just poor.

Moving into the start of the next week, Monday the 10th, the swell actually puts on a bit of a show, but it's a cruel tease. Monday afternoon sees a bump up to 10 ft at 18 seconds from the SSW, with a combined energy of all swells directed here at 5830 – that's a lot of power. But the wind is still a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy. Tuesday the 11th is even more frustrating, with the same 10 ft swell but the combined energy of all swells directed here hits 8357 on Tuesday afternoon. That is strong wave energy, but it's utterly wasted by the onshore wind. For a beginner, this is way too big anyway, over 8 ft, so it's strictly for experts, and even then, the conditions are poor.

The only break we've got to look at is Gerpuk Bay - Inside Gerpuk. It's a reef break, very consistent, and it's rated as a beginner spot. It's fairly exposed to the swell and the optimum direction is SSW, which is exactly what we're getting. That's the good news. The bad news is the wind. The forecast shows the wind is always from the SE, which is onshore for this spot. The crowd factor is "often", so on a good day you'd be sharing it, but these aren't good days. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.

The pattern doesn't let up. Wednesday the 12th through to the end of the first week is more of the same – 7 ft to 10 ft SSW swell, but the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore at 15 mph. The surf quality is consistently poor. The second week, from the 16th onward, is a bit of a repeat. The swell direction swings to the SW from the 18th, with some solid 10 ft days on the 19th and 20th (combined energy of all swells directed here at 5964 on the 20th morning). But the wind is up to 22 mph at times, and it's still onshore. The setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

So, the honest truth is there's no standout session, no clean window. It's a sustained run of solid swell but terrible wind. For a spot that's as consistent as Gerpuk Bay, it's a real bummer. We just have to hope the forecasts change, because this blank run of quality is a normal part of the season's pattern. Keep your eye on the charts, but for now, I'd save the wax.

Rusty.
