The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead. We’ve got a solid run of poor conditions that’s going to test your patience.
The main spot we’re looking at is Gerpuk Bay - Inside Gerpuk (Grupuk), a reef break that’s very consistent and works best with a swell from the SSW. The water temperature feels about average for this time of year.
We’re kicking off on Friday, August 21st, with a 7ft SW groundswell (period 15s) and a moderate onshore breeze from the SE. The swell energy is strong (2931). That same story repeats day after day. From Saturday the 22nd through to Monday the 24th, we’ve got 7ft to 8ft SSW swell, but the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, making everything choppy and messy. The energy is still moderate to strong (over 2000), but it’s wasted.
Tuesday the 25th into Wednesday the 26th, the swell drops to 6ft, but the wind picks up to a fresh 19 mph from the SE, making it even lumpier. The energy drops to around 1132-1706, but it’s still poor.
There’s a slight glimmer late in the first week. On Thursday, August 27th, the swell drops a bit to 4ft, but the period stretches to 20 seconds – a very long-period groundswell that can offer some shape. The wind is a lighter cross-onshore, and the energy is still moderate (2011). It’s labeled marginal, so it’s not a write-off, but it’s not a standout either.
Then we get a bigger pulse. On Friday, August 28th, the morning brings a 10ft SSW swell with a 17s period – that’s a lot of power (4486 energy). But the wind is still cross-onshore. That size is expert territory, and with the wind, it’s going to be a heavy, messy beast. Only for the brave and experienced.
The following week, from August 29th into early September, is a depressing repeat: 7ft to 3ft swell, but almost always with a cross-onshore wind. The energy varies from around 1000 to 1200, indicating weak to moderate conditions. There are a few marginal slots on the mornings of September 2nd and 3rd, with a 7ft to 8ft SSW swell and lighter winds, but the wind direction is still not ideal.
The real potential comes right at the end of the forecast. On Friday, September 4th, we see a 7ft SSW groundswell with a 20-second period, pumping in with a massive 5206 energy. The wind is onshore, but the sheer power and period are promising. Then on Saturday, September 5th, the swell jumps to 10ft SSW (16s period, 4250 energy), but again, cross-onshore wind spoils it. These are promising but uncertain this far out. That Friday the 4th morning is the closest thing to a standout, but it’s a long way off and the wind is the key question.
In short, there’s a whole lot of “meh” and not much that’s going to get you paddling out with a smile. The consistent nature of the break means it won’t stay flat, but the wind has been a real problem. For now, it’s a waiting game. Given the size and the cross-onshore wind, some of these setups might be more interesting for the kite crowd than for paddle surfers.
Rusty.
