The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one. The wind is just not playing ball for the next couple of weeks, which means we’re going to see a lot of chop and lumpy conditions. The swell is coming in, but it’s a real fight to find a window that’s clean.

We’re looking at Gerpuk Bay - Inside Gerpuk (Grupuk) for our options. It’s a very consistent reef break, so it’s always trying to fire, but the wind is the enemy here. The water temp is sitting at a warm 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The whole first week is a write-off. From Thursday afternoon, the 23rd of July, right through to the end of the month, the wind is hammering it from the SE or ESE at 15 to 25 mph, either straight onshore or cross-on. That’s just no good. We’ve got a solid SSW swell running, with faces around 4 ft, but the combined energy is moderate to strong, and it’s all being wrecked by the wind. The surf is just poor.

There’s a little glimmer on the morning of Friday, the 31st of July. The wind drops to a moderate 12 mph SE breeze, straight onshore, and the swell is a clean 5 ft from the SSW with a long 17-second period. The combined energy is strong. It’s only a “marginal” call, but it’s the first time the wind isn’t howling. It’s still onshore, so it won’t be glassy, but it might be the most rideable we get.

The first week of August looks like it’s bringing some serious size, but without the wind to match. Swells are hitting 7 ft to 8 ft from the SSW, with periods of 15 to 17 seconds, and the combined energy is getting very strong. That’s proper groundswell, and it would be incredible for a point or reef, but it’s all coming with onshore and cross-on winds from the SE at 12 to 18 mph. The report keeps saying “poor surf conditions” or “marginal,” and it’s a real shame. The morning of Tuesday, the 4th of August, has a 8 ft SSW swell with a 17-second period and a moderate 12 mph onshore wind, giving it a 1/10 score. That’s the best of the bunch, but it’s still not good.

If you’re a kite surfer, the setup from the 25th of July onwards looks pretty interesting. But for a paddle surfer, there’s just no standout day. The closest thing to a recommendation is the morning of the 31st of July, but even then, it’s onshore. You’d have to be pretty keen to paddle out.

Stay patient, the surf will come right eventually.

Rusty.
