The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. I’ve been staring at the charts, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this stretch is a tough one.
The whole 16-day window is a bit of a rough patch. We’ve got wave energy, no doubt about it, but the wind is just not cooperating. The first real "surf" window kicks off on Friday, September 4th, and it’s already a struggle.
So, Friday morning, we’ve got a 5-foot swell from the southwest with a 14-second period. That’s a good groundswell, but the wind is a cross-onshore at 15 mph, which just messes up the surface. It’s poor surf. The combined energy is moderate at 850. It stays like this all weekend.
There’s a long stretch here. Day after day, the story is the same: the swell is there, pushing 7 feet on Saturday and Sunday, but the wind stays cross-onshore at 12-15 mph. The combined energy gets strong, hitting 1420 and 2065, but when the wind is onshore, the waves are just a choppy mess.
The only spot we’re looking at is Gerpuk Bay - Inside Gerpuk. It’s a reef break, perfect for beginners, and it’s very consistent. The best swell direction is from the SSW, and we’re getting plenty of that. But with the wind blowing cross-onshore the whole time, even a spot this consistent can’t give you a clean wave. It’s a heartbreaker.
The wind does ease up a little around Thursday, September 10th, dropping to a gentle breeze at 9 mph, and the conditions become "fairly choppy" instead of a total mess. The swell is still solid at 6 feet from the SSW, but the wave comment is still marginal. You might get a session where you’re not fighting the wind as much, but it’s not a standout.
We get a couple of days where the wind switches to "onshore" from the SE on September 16th, but the swell drops to 6 feet and the combined energy is moderate. It’s still poor surf. Then on September 18th and 19th, we get another "onshore" wind window, but the swell is 7 and 8 feet – that’s big for Inside Gerpuk, which is a beginner spot. For a beginner, 5 feet is the limit, so those 6-7 foot waves are going to be a real challenge. The period is 14-15 seconds, so it’s a long period groundswell, which at a reef break can be lined up, but the wind isn’t clean enough to make it special.
To be honest, the whole 16 days is a washout. Don’t bother checking the buoys. Just wait for the wind to change. It’s one of those times where the swell is here, but the wind is wrong. With that steady cross-onshore wind and solid swell, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Rusty.
