The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on the surf outlook for Gerpuk Bay – Inside Gerpuk. It’s a reef break that’s pretty consistent and a solid option for beginners. Right now, the water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The pattern over the next 16 days is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got plenty of swell energy coming in, but the wind is going to be a real problem for most of it. The first week, from Friday 11 September through to the end of the following week, we’re looking at a persistent cross-onshore breeze from the southeast, which is going to mess up the surface. The swell is there, mostly from the SW, but it’s going to be choppy and bumpy, not the clean lines we want.

The standout period is shaping up for Thursday 24 September. That’s the one to circle. The swell is solid, around 8ft to 8ft, from the SSW, with a long period of 15 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is strong at 2685. The wind is expected to be light, from the south at just 9 mph, and it’s going to be cross-shore, so the surface should be much cleaner, with just a slight cross-chop. That’s the best chance for a decent session. The morning looks best, with a gentle breeze and fairly choppy conditions improving to that cleaner cross-shore in the afternoon. This is a good one for intermediate to advanced surfers, as the swell is getting up there.

Before that, from Friday 11 September through to Wednesday 23 September, it’s mostly a write-off for quality surfing. The swell is there, but the wind is just too strong and onshore or cross-onshore, making it ragged and unappealing. We’re looking at a lot of days with a poor rating, meaning the conditions are poor or marginal. There’s a long stretch of this, so don’t expect much.

After the 24th, into Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September, the wind picks up again and the swell starts to drop, so it’s back to the same story of choppy, messy surf.

So, for the best bet, keep your eyes on Thursday 24 September. The early morning and afternoon both look promising, with that lighter wind and cleaner, long-period SSW swell. The rest of the forecast is a bit of a washout, but we’ll see if the forecasts change.

Rusty.
