The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, so we're looking at the Gerpuk Bay area, specifically the Inside Gerpuk break. I gotta be straight with you – the outlook is a bit of a rough one for the paddle surfer. We've got a solid, persistent SSW swell running for the whole 16-day window, but the wind is the story here. It's howling out of the SE almost the entire time, which puts a nasty cross-onshore or onshore wind on the break. That means the surface is going to be chopped up and messy, with poor surf conditions forecast for the majority of the period.
We start off on Thursday, the 13th of August, with a big 10ft SSW swell at a very long 16-second period. The combined wave energy is a massive 4116, so there's plenty of power in the water. But that 25 km/h cross-on wind from the SE just ruins it. This pattern is set to continue through the weekend. Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th see swells between 7ft and 8ft, still with that long period, but the wind is relentless. The water temp is 79°, which is about normal for the time of year.
Now, there's a glimmer of hope. The mornings of Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th see the wind drop to a gentle breeze of 15 km/h. While it's still cross-on, that's a much better prospect. On Wednesday morning the 19th, we have a 8ft swell from the SW with a very long 18-second period, and the energy is a whopping 4156. The wind is just a "gentle cross-onshore and fairly choppy." For a spot like Inside Gerpuk, which is a reef break and very consistent, a long period SSW or SW swell is exactly what it's built for. However, with the swell at 8ft, this is getting into expert territory. The tide also needs to be right.
After that, it's back to the same story. The wind picks up again, and the conditions turn poor. The wave energy stays high, but the wind is the enemy. There are big gaps of days with no real recommendations, especially from the 20th of August onwards, where the forecast is consistently "poor surf conditions." The swell sticks around, but it's a battle against the wind.
If I had to pick the only real standout in this whole window, it would be the Wednesday morning, August 19th, at Inside Gerpuk. The swell is solid from the SSW at 8ft, the period is a fantastic 18 seconds, and the energy is pumping. The wind is the lightest it will be, making it the least choppy option. It's not perfect, but it's the best of a rough bunch. Just be aware that size is for experienced surfers only.
Otherwise, to be honest, with this much cross-shore wind and solid swell, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It's going to be a tough few weeks for the dedicated surfer.
