The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

We’ve got a solid window of swell on the cards for Ekas-Outside – a reef setup that’s fairly consistent and exposed to the SW. This is a good spot for beginners, but pay attention to the size. The water’s sitting at a warm 80°, right around the normal mark for this time of year, so no nasty surprises temperature-wise.

The action kicks off from the morning of Wednesday the 19th. The ocean is packing some serious energy with a combined swell energy reading of 3782 (strong energy). We’re looking at a 8ft SW groundswell, with a very long period of 18 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, and on a reef like this, it’s going to set up some nice, powerful lines. The wind is light and offshore from the ESE, so it’ll be glassy and clean. This is the standout session of the whole run – excellent conditions for experienced surfers. That long period will mean longer waits between sets, but the paddle-out will be easier.

Heading into Wednesday afternoon, the swell bumps up a touch to 8ft, still from the SW, but the wind swings to a cross-offshore SE. It stays clean, but the magic of the morning glass is gone. The combined energy hits 4127 – still very strong.

Thursday the 20th through to the weekend stays fun, but it’s a step down. The swell drops gradually from 8ft on Thursday morning down to 6ft by Sunday afternoon. The period stays decent between 15-16 seconds, so there’s still shape. However, the wind remains a cross-offshore from the SE or SSE, blowing at 12-19 mph. It’s clean, but it’s not that perfect offshore we had. The combined energy drops from 3950 on Thursday morning down to 2655 by Sunday afternoon. It’s a long run of clean, rideable waves, but nothing else is a true standout.

The following week, from Monday the 24th onward, the swell fades. Heights drop from 6ft down to 3ft by Thursday the 27th. The combined energy dips into the 800-1800 range, which is weak to moderate. The wind stays cross-offshore, but the juice is gone. Thursday afternoon sees a weird spike – a 3ft swell with a 20-second period, giving a combined energy of 1503. That’s a very long period for a tiny wave, so it’ll be fat and slow.

Then, on Friday the 28th, we get a second pulse. The morning brings back 8ft of SW swell with a 16-second period, combined energy of 2992. The wind is a gentle cross-offshore from the SSE, so it’s clean again. This is another good option for experienced surfers, but it’s not as clean as that first Wednesday morning. The afternoon gets a bit messy with some cross-shore wind and chop.

Saturday the 29th is a smaller echo of that, with 6ft in the morning and clean conditions. After that, the swell drops back to 5ft or less until the end of the month.

Now, look ahead to the end of the forecast. On Monday the 31st, we see a long-period (21-second) SW swell at 5ft, but with a combined energy of 3025. That’s a lot of energy for a small wave. Then, on Tuesday the 1st of September, we get the biggest swell of the whole run: 8ft from the SW, 18-second period, and a combined energy of 4615. That’s strong. The wind is a cross-offshore SE at 16 mph, so it’s clean. Another excellent session for the experienced crew. This is the second standout, but it’s further out, so keep an eye on it.

The rest of the first week of September eases off, with swell around 6ft to 7ft, clean but nothing special.

So, to sum it up: the best wave of the whole run is hands-down Wednesday morning, the 19th. Glassy, powerful, long-period groundswell – it’s a gem. The second best is the pulse on Friday the 28th morning, and the big one on Tuesday the 1st of September is a promising long-range option. The rest of the time is a lot of clean, cross-offshore conditions with decent swell, but nothing to make you call in sick for.

Rusty.
