The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
First off, don’t get too excited about this weekend. The surf is there, but it’s a bit of a mess with the wind. We’ve got a solid, clean swell direction coming from the SSW, which is exactly what Ekas-Outside likes to see. The water is sitting at a warm 81°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Sunday the 19th kicks off with a 4ft SSW swell at a 13-second period. The combined energy is moderate (880), so there’s some push, but the wind is a cross-off from the SE at 15 mph. It’s clean, but that wind is strong enough to mess with the surface a bit. It’s a beginner-friendly reef break, but the quality is just marginal. Not a standout.
Monday the 20th sees a jump in size. The swell hits 7ft from the SSW with a 17-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell, and the energy is strong (2647). This is the kind of pulse that will make Ekas-Outside really start to work. But again, the wind is a fresh cross-off at 18 mph. It’s clean, but the wind is the story here – it’s keeping the quality from being epic. Even so, this is the best-looking day of the first week. The longer period will mean better shaped waves, but it’s not a glassy day.
The middle of the week (Tuesday 22nd through Thursday 24th) backs off a bit. Swell drops to 3ft to 4ft, and the wind stays stubbornly from the SE at 15-18 mph. The energy drops to moderate levels (700-900). The surf is there, but it’s not doing anything special. There’s a noticeable gap of poor conditions on Thursday 23rd morning, where the score is a zero. It’s a flat spot.
The next pulse comes on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th. This is a different swell – a short-period 8-second SE swell at 7ft to 7ft. That’s a lot of water moving, but the period is short, so the waves will be a bit lumpy and less powerful. The energy is still moderate (801-1145), but it’s not the quality groundswell we had earlier. The wind is still cross-off. This setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, in my opinion.
Now, the real talk. The best of the entire forecast window is the very end of the run. We’re looking at Thursday 30th of July and Friday 31st. The swell is back to SW/SSW, the period climbs to 18-20 seconds, and the energy is strong (1487-1726). The wind is a moderate breeze at 12-15 mph from the SE. This is a classic groundswell pulse for the reef. The waves will be long, clean, and have that proper shape. This is what you wait for. It’s over a week away, so treat it as a promising but not locked-in call.
Then, the first week of August kicks off with the biggest swell of the lot. Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd of August see 8ft to 8ft SW swell with a 16-17 second period. The energy is very strong (2983-3677). This is expert territory – 8ft is big, and on a reef, that’s a serious session. The wind is still cross-off, but the size and power are undeniable. Monday 3rd of August keeps the energy pumping at 4700 (very strong) with a 7ft SSW swell at 19 seconds. That’s a massive amount of energy. Again, this is for experienced surfers only.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a bit frustrated by wind. The standout is Monday 20th July for the first long-period groundswell, but don’t expect perfection. The real gem is the Thursday 30th July through Friday 31st July window – that’s the call for a proper, clean, long-period groundswell with good energy. The first week of August is for the big-wave crew only. Crowds are always possible at Ekas-Outside, so get out there early if you’re chasing the best of it.
Rusty.
