The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Lookin’ at the stretch ahead for Ekas-Outside, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a long run of so-so conditions. We’ve got consistent, clean swell from the SSW, but the wind’s staying cross-offshore the whole time, which keeps the surface workable but never lets it glass off. The water temp’s about average for the time of year, nothing wild.
The first real action worth paddling out for kicks off Sunday morning the 23rd of August. We’re lookin’ at 7 ft of SSW swell with a very long 15-second period – that’s proper groundswell, and it’ll set up nicely at this reef. Combined energy’s moderate at 1970, so there’s a bit of push. Wind’s a moderate breeze from the SE at 15 mph, cross-off, which keeps the face clean. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, fairly exposed, so it’s doable if you’re not too green. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, so expect company.
Through Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, the swell drops a touch to 6 ft–7 ft, still with that long period, but the wind picks up to 19 mph at times – fresh breeze, cross-off. The energy stays moderate (1856, 1742, 1268), and the surf remains clean but not firing. It’s not bad, just average.
Now, the standout is Friday morning the 28th of August. That’s the one to circle. The swell jumps to 10 ft from the SW with a 17-second period. Combined energy shoots up to 4659 – that’s strong wave energy, no doubt. The wind’s a moderate cross-off at 12 mph. For most surfers, this is expert territory – over 8 ft – so the drop-in’s not for everyone. The long period means it’ll unload with plenty of power, and at a reef break, that’s gonna be proper. Just know the break can be inconsistent, and crowds are possible.
After that, it tapers off slowly. Saturday the 29th sees 7 ft dropping to 6 ft, energy around 1874. Into the last week of August and first days of September, we’re hangin’ around 5 ft–7 ft with clean conditions but never anything that really lifts the heart. By the 4th of September, the swell drops to 4 ft–5 ft, energy down to 660-888 – weak stuff. Then a little pulse picks up again on the 6th and 7th of September with 6 ft–6 ft and moderate energy around 1040-2783, but it’s still cross-off wind all the way.
So, bottom line: Friday 28th August morning is the best on offer. Clean, strong, 10 ft SSW groundswell with a 17-second pulse. Solid wave energy (4659). It’s for experienced surfers, but it’s the only real standout.
Keep it salty,
Rusty
