The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the forecast for Ekas-Outside. The water temp here is sitting at 81°, with the anomaly at 1°, so it’s basically what you’d expect for this time of year – no surprises there.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the first few days of this outlook are a bit of a letdown. We’ve got waves on offer, but they’re just not cooking. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th have a clean 5ft to 4ft swell from the SW, with a solid 15 to 13 second period, and the wind is a cross-off from the SE at 15-19 mph. The wave energy is moderate, but the overall quality is just marginal. The tide is likely messing with the shape, so it’s not a great time to paddle out.
Monday the 20th is where things start to get a bit more interesting. The swell bumps up to 7ft to 7ft from the SSW, with a very long 17-second period on the morning. That’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is strong. But again, the wind is a cross-off from the SE at 19 mph, and the forecast is still calling it “marginal.” It might be a bit too much for beginners, and the long period can make a reef break like this one jack up fast. For the experienced crew, it could be worth a look, but don’t expect perfection.
The rest of that week from Tuesday the 22nd through Friday the 24th is a bit of a dud. Swell drops to 3ft or less, and the energy sinks. The wind stays the same. It’s a quiet run.
Then we hit the weekend of the 26th and 27th. The swell on Sunday the 26th is 6ft to 7ft, but it’s shifting to the SE and the period drops to a shocking 7 to 8 seconds. That’s short period, wind-swell chop. The energy is still there, but it’s going to be a messy, straight wall at a reef. The 27th is a little better, with a 7ft SE swell and an 8-second period in the morning, but that’s still not great.
Now, here’s the one that stands out. Look at Tuesday the 28th. The morning shows a 6ft SSW groundswell with a very long 18-second period, and the combined energy is massive. The wind is a cross-off at 16 mph. For a reef break like this, that long period is gold. It’s going to push in with a lot of power and hold up nicely. This is the best window of the whole outlook. The crowd is “sometimes” here, so don’t be surprised if a few others have the same idea. This is a solid call for the experienced surfer.
The rest of the second week is a mix. The 29th and 30th drop off a little, with a 5ft to 3ft SSW swell. Then on the 31st of July, we see another pulse: 6ft to 6ft from the SW with a 19-second period and a massive energy reading. That’s a lot of power. Same story with the wind.
Looking way out to the 1st and 2nd of August, we get a bit of a warning. The swell hits 10ft from the SE, but the period is only 9 to 10 seconds. That’s a lot of water moving fast, but it’s wind swell. At that size, this spot is for experts only. And with that short period, it’s going to be a heavy, dumpy closeout. Honestly, it might be more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.
So, to wrap it up: the standout is Tuesday the 28th of July. That 6ft SSW groundswell with the 18-second period is your best bet. The 31st of July is also a promising long-range call, but less certain. Everything else is either too small, too short period, or too messy.
Rusty out.
