The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a good long look at what’s coming down the pipe. This forecast is all about one spot: Ekas-Outside. It’s a reef setup, fairly exposed, and it’s going to be serving up a solid run of surf, but with a few strings attached. The water temp is sitting pretty much where you’d expect for this time of year, nothing weird going on there.
We’ve got a bit of a gap right at the start, so don’t bother paddling out just yet, but from Wednesday the 19th we’re on. That morning kicks off with a nice 8ft SW groundswell, period a super juicy 18 seconds. That’s proper long-period energy, the kind that wraps around points and reefs beautifully. The combined energy reading is a beefy 3760 (very strong wave energy). Wind is light offshore from the east at 9 mph, making for glassy, clean conditions. This is the standout of the whole outlook. It’s going to be excellent for experienced surfers – anything over 8ft is expert territory, and at 8ft it’s still a handful for beginners. That long period means the sets will have real punch and long gaps, making the paddle out manageable if you’re fit. It’s the best it’s going to get, so mark Wednesday morning on your calendar.
The rest of that week and into the next slides into a consistent but not quite perfect pattern. From Wednesday afternoon the 19th through to Sunday the 23rd, we’re looking at a steady diet of 6ft to 8ft SW to SSW swell, with periods holding between 15 and 17 seconds. The combined energy stays in the very strong range (2000 to 4160). The catch is the wind. It shifts to a cross-offshore from the SE and SSE, blowing 12 to 16 mph. It’s still clean, but it’s not that perfect morning glass. The quality is still there for the experienced crew, but it loses that magic sparkle of the Wednesday morning window. Crowds are listed as "sometimes," so you might have a few locals out, but nothing too hectic at a spot with this kind of consistency.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th see the swell dip a little, with heights around 5ft to 7ft and energy dropping into the moderate-to-strong range (1374 to 2000). The wind stays cross-off, so still surfable, but it’s a step down in power. Wednesday the 26th is the low point, with the swell bottoming out at 5ft to 5ft. The energy drops to 1025 and 836. The surf gets a bit weak and fat. Not worth rushing for.
But don’t write off the second week entirely. Thursday the 27th afternoon sees a pulse of long-period energy (20 seconds) and 4ft swell, with a combined energy of 1736. That’s a weird combo – small wave height but a very long period. It’ll be a bit fat for the beach, but on this reef, it could offer some surprisingly fun lines. Then on Friday the 28th, we get a proper return of size: 8ft SSW groundswell in the morning, period 16 seconds, combined energy up to 3024. Winds are cross-off at 12 mph. This is the other standout of the outlook, but it’s over a week away, so keep your expectations flexible. It looks promising, not a sure thing.
After that, the surf fades again into the end of August and the start of September, with smaller 4ft to 6ft swells and moderate energy levels. Nothing to write home about, but there’ll be small waves for the keen ones if the wind plays nice.
So, to boil it down: Wednesday morning the 19th is your absolute best bet – perfect conditions, big clean swell. Friday the 28th is the other one to watch, if the forecast holds up. The rest is a solid but imperfect run of groundswell for the experienced surfer. If you’re a beginner, give it a miss when it’s over 5ft, which is most of the first week.
Rusty.
