The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you—this stretch of 16 days is a bit of a grind at Ekas-Outside. There’s swell on the table, but it’s constantly fighting a cross-off wind and the tide window keeps the forecast saying “marginal.” There’s no real standout session that screams “drop everything and go,” but if you’re hungry for a wave, you’ll find something to work with, especially if you’re patient.

The water’s sitting at 81°F right now, which is about normal for this time of year, so no shock there.

Friday, July 17th, we kick off with a 4.6ft SW swell at a very long 15 seconds, moderate energy (1571). The wind is cross-off from the SE at 12 mph, which keeps it clean but not perfect. It’s a beginner-friendly reef, fairly consistent, but the crowds are possible. The swell direction is SSW, which matches the optimum, so the shape should have some push. Still, the overall score isn’t strong enough to call it a winner.

Saturday, July 18th, the swell drops a touch to 4.3ft, period shortens to 13 seconds, and the wind picks up to 19 mph in the arvo. The energy’s moderate (1016). It’s surfable but not memorable.

Sunday, July 19th, similar story: 4.3ft, 13 seconds, cross-off wind, and the energy’s dropping (833). The tide and conditions keep it marginal.

Monday, July 20th, things get a bit more interesting. A 6.6ft SSW swell rolls in with a 17-second period, hitting strong energy (2610). That’s a solid groundswell, but it’s also a bit too big for beginners now. The wind is still cross-off SE at 19 mph, so it’s clean but not glassy. A long period swell (groundswell) and a period over 15 seconds is considered very long. Long period swells are prone to breaking too straight at beach breaks and are best at point breaks, reefs and rivers, so this can be a caveat. That’s a lot of water moving, and the tide could make it tough. The score is still marginal, so it’s not the best day.

Tuesday, July 21st, through to Wednesday, July 22nd, the swell fades gradually from 6.2ft to 3.9ft, period dropping, energy sliding down to 659. The wind stays cross-off, but the surf quality is just “okay.”

Thursday, July 23rd, the swell is 3.6ft, and the forecast says “poor surf conditions” with a score of 0. That’s a day to stay on the beach. The wind is cross-off, but the combination of tide and swell just isn’t working.

Friday, July 24th, it’s a similar story: 3.0ft to 3.9ft, period 13 seconds, energy moderate (656). Not worth paddling out unless you’re desperate.

Saturday, July 25th, we see a mix. The morning has a 4.3ft SSW swell at 15 seconds, energy at 1471, and the wind is lighter at 12 mph. This is the closest thing to a highlight in the first week. The swell direction is good, the reef is consistent, and it’s beginner-friendly. The score is a 3, which is the best we’ve seen. But the afternoon brings a 6.9ft SE swell with a short 9-second period, energy at 1276, and the wind picks up to 19 mph. That’s a messier, windier, shorter-period wave. The morning is the pick here.

Sunday, July 26th, the swell is 5.2ft from the SE, period 8 seconds (short), energy at 902. The wind is cross-off. It’s not great.

Monday, July 27th, the morning has a tiny 2.6ft SSW swell, period 13 seconds, light breeze at 6 mph, and the forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s a glassy morning, but the swell is too small for any real ride. The afternoon brings a 4.9ft SE swell at 8 seconds, wind 19 mph. Not much happening.

Tuesday, July 28th, the swell is 2
