Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let's break it down for the next couple weeks. The only break in the picture is Ekas-Outside, a reef that’s fairly open to south-southwest swell. The water temp is 28°, which is about one degree warmer than what’s normal for this time of year – a little above average but nothing wild.
The best shot comes on Sunday morning, July 5th. A solid 1.8m SSW groundswell with a long 15-second period – the combined wave energy is strong at 1548. The wind is a light cross-off from the ESE at 9 mph, so the surface is clean. This is the standout session of the whole forecast. Not huge, but the period and light wind are making for proper lines. The reef is beginner-friendly, but at 1.8m, it’s a bit too big for total beginners. The swell direction is right on the money for this break.
After that Sunday morning, things get rougher. The wind picks up through the afternoons – hit 16 to 22 mph from the SE – and though the swell stays between 1.3m and 2.1m with decent period, the quality drops. The conditions go “marginal” for most of the first week and into the second. No real clean glass or offshore windows after that first session.
From July 8th to July 10th, there’s more size – 2.0m to 2.1m SSW swell – but the wind is up around 16 to 22 mph. The reef might still hold, but it’s going to be bumpy and a battle. The combined energy is strong, hitting between 1788 and 2180, so there’s plenty of power, but the quality just isn’t there.
Into July 13th and 14th, there’s a quick pulse of very long-period groundswell. Monday morning the 13th has a 1.0m SSW swell with a 20-second period – combined energy 976. That’s a true groundswell, but at only 1.0m, it’s going to be pretty weak and slow. The next morning, July 14th, jumps to 2.1m with 17-second period and a huge 2907 combined energy – serious power. But again, the wind is cross-off and moderate, so it’ll be messy. That kind of long-period swell at a reef can be magic, but it needs the wind to play nice.
The last real chance is Saturday morning, July 18th. Only a 1.1m SW swell with 14-second period and light 9 mph ESE winds – combined energy a modest 965. The data says “expect very good surf conditions,” so it’s punchy for the size, clean, and could be a fun, smooth session without the crowds getting thick.
Then on Sunday morning, July 19th, we get another jump to 1.7m SW at 16 seconds, combined energy 1711. Again, the wind is a moderate cross-off at 12 mph – not perfect, but better than the afternoon blowouts.
For the rest of the second week, the swell drops and the wind stays fresh. Nothing worth paddling for in the afternoons – the data shows poor to marginal conditions across the board.
The standout: Without a doubt, Sunday morning, July 5th is the one. Clean, 1.8m SSW, 15-second period, light cross-off, and strong energy. Get out there early, because the clean windows after that are few and far between.
Rusty.
