The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next 16 days for Ekas-Outside.
We’ve got a long run of surf coming, but it’s a consistent, steady-state menu rather than a world-class feast. The trade winds are locked in from the southeast, blowing cross-offshore, which keeps the surface clean for the most part. The water is sitting at 81°, which is about 1° warmer than the long-term average, so pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year.
The main story is a solid, long-period SSW groundswell that hangs around for over a week. The combined swell energy is moderate to strong, with values like 2440 (moderate wave energy) and 1847 (moderate wave energy) on the first day. The wave period is a long 15 to 16 seconds on the first few days, which means proper, powerful, well-shaped lines. Because this is a reef break, that long period works in its favour, giving you steep, clean faces. The downside is that the wind, while cross-off, is a consistent 16 mph, sometimes gusting to 19 mph, which adds a bit of chop on the surface.
The best bet in the first week is probably the morning of Wednesday the 15th. You’ve got swell at 7 ft from the SSW with a 16-second period, combined energy of 2440 (moderate wave energy), and a light 9 mph cross-off breeze. That’s the cleanest, most powerful window of the early run. It’s a beginner-friendly reef, but at 7 ft, it’s pushing into the territory where it’s more fun for intermediate and above. The size is manageable, but it won’t be a puddle.
The rest of that first week, from Thursday the 16th through to Sunday the 19th, is a slow taper. Swell drops from 6 ft to 4 ft, and the period stays solid (13-15 seconds), but the wind picks up to 16-19 mph. The combined energy dips into the 900s and 1100s (weak to moderate wave energy), so it’s still surfable but less punchy. The surf is clean, but it’s not going to get your heart racing.
We hit a new pulse on Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. The swell jumps back to 7 ft-7 ft from the SSW, with a 16-17 second period. The combined energy spikes again to 2512 (moderate wave energy) and 2291 (moderate wave energy). The wind stays on the stronger side at 19 mph, but it’s cross-off, so it’s not ruining it. This is the second-best window of the run, but because the wind is stronger, it’s not as clean as the 15th.
After that, the swell settles into a long, drawn-out fade from the 22nd to the 24th, with heights between 4 ft and 5 ft and periods slipping to 13-16 seconds. The combined energy drops to the 600s and 700s (weak wave energy), so it’s flat-ish and weaker. The wind is still 19 mph, making it a bit of a battle for little reward.
The real standout, the one that has me talking even though it’s a long way off, is the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell is only 4 ft from the SW, but the period is a very long 19 seconds, and the combined energy is 1850 (moderate wave energy). The wind drops to a light 6 mph cross-off. That’s the kind of setup that makes a reef like Ekas-Outside come alive with long, clean, glassy lines. The morning of Wednesday the 29th is also promising, with 4 ft swell, 17-second period, and a gentle 9 mph cross-off. These are the most likely opportunities for the best, most user-friendly waves of the whole outlook, but remember, it’s two weeks away, so don’t book your flights yet.
The 30th looks okay, with morning conditions holding a gentle breeze and 4 ft swell, but the energy is starting to fade.
Crowds? The file says it’s “sometimes” busy, so on the better days, expect a few others out there. It’s a fairly consistent reef, so it’s not a mystery spot, but it’s not a circus either.
In short: The best clean, powerful, and manageable swell is the morning of the 15th. The best *quality* of wave, with the lightest wind and longest period, is the morning of the 28th, but that’s a two-week wait. The week in between is a steady, average run of chest-to-head-high waves with a consistent breeze. If you’re a beginner, aim for the first few days when the swell is under 5 ft, like the 16th or 17th.
Rusty.
