The Lowdown
Alright, it’s Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Ekas-Outside. This is a reef break that is fairly consistent and works best with a swell straight out of the SSW.
The water temp right now is sitting right around 80°, which is bang on average for the time of year, so no weird surprises there.
Right, the wait won’t be long. We’ve got some action from Monday the 17th. That first afternoon sees a cross-off breeze with 5ft swell from the SSW at 14 seconds, but the general energy is moderate (890), and it’s considered marginal. Not the pick of the run.
The real standout here comes on Tuesday morning, the 18th. That’s the one. Early session, the swell is 4ft from the SSW, but the period is a nice long 16 seconds, meaning it’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy jumps right up to 2053, showing good strength. Wind is a gentle cross-off from the ESE, keeping things clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and that long period will reel in nicely at a reef setup like this.
We build from there. By Wednesday the 19th, the morning is looking strong with offshore wind from the east at 9 mph, bringing clean conditions to a 8ft swell from the SW at an even longer 18 seconds. That’s proper energy (3724) – but at that size, it’s only for the experienced crew. The afternoon picks up to 8ft, but the wind swings cross-off.
Thursday the 20th is another solid call. The morning holds 8ft of SW groundswell (16 seconds) with a strong 4148 energy reading. The wind is a gentle cross-off, making for clean, powerful lines. Again, this is expert territory due to the height.
The run stays consistent through the week. Friday the 21st sees a dip to 6ft in the morning, but Friday afternoon pushes back up to 8ft from the SSW with a 17-second period (3480 energy). The cross-off wind is freshening to 19 mph, so it’s not as clean as the mornings, but still rideable for those used to a bit of chop.
From Saturday the 22nd through to Tuesday the 25th, we’ve got a steady run of SW/SSW swells between 6ft and 7ft, periods from 15 to 16 seconds. The energy remains moderate to strong, and while the wind is cross-off from the SE/SSE every session, it’s not offshore, so the face won’t be perfect glass, but it’ll be far from messy.
Wednesday the 26th drops off noticeably: the swell eases to 5–5ft and the period shortens to 13–14 seconds. Energy drops below 1000, and the whole day is rated marginal. It gets friskier again Thursday the 27th with a jump to 6ft and a 17-second period (2211 energy), but the wind is up to 19 mph, so it’s bumpy.
Then there is a long, consistent, but not spectacular run right through to the end of the month. The biggest pulse re-appears on Sunday the 30th with a 7ft SW groundswell (16 seconds) and 2529 energy, coupled with a gentle morning breeze. But again, it’s cross-off, not glassy offshore, so it’s good but not the top-tier session.
Looking way ahead to Monday the 31st of August into Tuesday the 1st of September, the swell builds again. Monday afternoon has a serious 7ft SW swell with a long 21-second period – that’s very long period, meaning big, powerful lines at this reef, best for experienced surfers. The energy is enormous at 4421, but the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-off, so it’s going to be lumpy. Tuesday morning pushes to 8ft with 18 seconds and 4546 energy – serious juice – but again, fresh cross-off winds mean it’s a battle.
In summary, Tuesday morning the 18th is your standout window: clean, solid groundswell good for experienced surfers. Thursday the 20th morning runs a close second for size and power. Later in the run, the 30th offers a decent option. For beginners, some of the smaller days (like the 17th or 26th) are more manageable, but the wind is never fully offshore past the 19th morning, so conditions will be mixed.
There are no days of totally flat surf here, so the gaps are short – just a few hours of marginal conditions between sessions.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
