Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what's cookin' out there. We've got a solid run of waves on the cards, so let's get stuck in.
The pattern is pretty consistent for the next couple of weeks, with a steady pulse of south-southwest swell keeping things alive. The water is sitting at 82°, which is a bit warmer than average for this time of year, so the boardies are definitely the call.
We kick off Sunday, the 5th of July, at Ekas-Outside. It's not the cleanest start with a moderate cross-off breeze from the SE at 16 mph, but the swell is a solid 6 ft from the SSW with a solid 14-second period. The combined swell energy is strong, reading 1454, so there's plenty of push. The break is fairly consistent and fairly exposed, so it'll be handling that energy well. It's a beginner-friendly reef, so the size is manageable for most, but the cross-off wind means you'll need to work for your clean face.
Moving into Monday morning, the 6th, the swell backs off a touch to 4 ft but the period stretches out to a very long 17 seconds from the SSW. This is proper groundswell. The cross-off wind is still there at 16 mph. The long period will mean better shaped waves, more energy, and longer lulls between sets, which can make the paddle out a bit easier. The afternoon sees the wind pick up to 19 mph, making it a bit more challenging.
The middle of the week, from the 7th to the 10th of July, is where it gets interesting. The swell size bumps up repeatedly. On Wednesday the 8th, we see 6 ft and 7 ft swells from the SW and SSW, with the combined energy hitting over 2000. The wind stays as a stiff cross-off breeze, which isn't ideal but keeps the waves from getting completely blown out.
Here's the standout window. Look at Thursday the 9th of July morning. The swell holds at 7 ft from the SSW with that same 15-second period, and the combined energy is the highest we'll see at 2173. The wind is a cross-off from the ESE. For a beginner reef, 7 ft is getting up there in size, but for anyone with a bit of experience, the power and shape on offer is going to be proper. The quality is there if you can handle the size.
The following week continues with a similar rhythm. There's a slight drop in size over the weekend of the 12th and 13th, with the swell bottoming out around 3 ft on Sunday the 12th – that's a day to leave the stick at home. But it fires back up quickly. By Monday the 13th afternoon, we're back to 6 ft from the SSW with an 18-second period, and the energy is strong again.
Tuesday the 14th of July is another red-letter day. The morning shows a 7 ft SSW swell with a 17-second period, and the combined energy rockets up to 2857. That's a lot of water moving. The wind is a manageable 16 mph cross-off. For an expert surfer, this is prime. For the less experienced, it's going to be too much.
The last few days, from the 16th to the 20th, keep the good times rolling. Swells stay in the 5 ft to 7 ft range from the SSW and SW, with consistently strong energy. The wind remains our constant companion: that SE cross-off, usually around 16-19 mph. It's never glassy, but it's workable, and it keeps the crowd factor in check, though Ekas-Outside can get busy sometimes.
Overall, if you've got the skills for the bigger days, get on it around Thursday the 9th and Tuesday the 14th of July. The wave quality from that long-period groundswell will be worth the effort. For the beginner, the smaller windows around the 4 ft to 5 ft days like the 6th and the 11th are your best bet, just be aware of the wind.
Rusty.
