The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s break down this stretch of waves ahead of us. It’s not going to be pumping perfection, but there are a few windows that’ll get your heart rate up. Just keep in mind a steady cross-off breeze is going to be a constant player.
Starting off at Ekas-Outside with clear skies. The water temp is sitting about average for the time of year. On the morning of August 22nd, we’ve got a solid 7ft of SSW groundswell with a long 16-second period. The energy is strong, reading 2546. It’s rideable, but the forecast flags marginal surf or questionable tide conditions. The wind is a moderate 25 km/h. We roll through the 23rd with 7ft dropping to 6ft, and the wind picks up to 30 km/h in the afternoon, making things a bit more of a battle. Monday the 24th holds similar 7 to 6ft SSW swell. This is a fairly consistent reef, so there’s always something, but this long-period energy might be breaking a bit straight.
Here’s the first real highlight. The morning of Friday, August 28th, a bigger pulse of 8ft SSW swell arrives, with the energy jumping to a solid 3929. This is reaching the size where it’s for experienced surfers only. It comes with a 16-second period, so it’s got some punch. It’s still flagged as marginal, but this is the best combination of size and power in the first week. The winds stay moderate which is a win.
After that, we ease back. The 29th has 6ft, dropping to 4ft by the morning of the 30th. But then, the afternoon of the 30th brings a different, short-period SSE swell, around 4ft, which is less organized.
The 31st starts with a junky 7ft of short-period SSE energy, but by the afternoon, it cleans up, switching to a 4ft SSW groundswell with a very long 17-second period. That long period at this reef could be magic.
Now for the second week. The outlook is promising but less certain. Tuesday, September 1st, the afternoon shows a powerful 7ft SW groundswell with a 19-second period and a strong energy reading of 3449. That’s a promising combo for the reef, a definite standout to watch. Wednesday morning, September 2nd, is also looking good with 8ft of SW groundswell at 17 seconds.
From the 3rd onward, it’s a steady decline. We’re looking at 6ft on the 3rd, dropping to 5ft by the 4th, and then 5ft through September 5th and 6th. Energy levels drop too, into the moderate range. The cross-off wind continues, but the surf gets more manageable.
Bottom line: the standout days look like Friday the 28th and Tuesday the 1st. The rest is just fun-sized, clean waves for those who want to get out there. That 8ft day is for the experienced crew only, so be smart about it. Pick your tide windows and you’ll find some.
