The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down the outlook for Ekas-Outside. These next couple of weeks have some decent push in the water, but the wind is gonna be a constant cross-off, so it’s not going to be a glassy paradise. The water temp is about 81°, which is normal for this time of year.
We kick off on Saturday the 18th of July with a 5ft SW swell, period around 14 seconds. The wind is cross-off from the SE at 15 mph, keeping things clean but bumpy. The combined energy is moderate (1040), but the overall quality is just so-so. Sunday the 19th is much the same – 4ft SW swell, 13 seconds, with the same cross-off breeze. Not terrible, but nothing to write home about.
Now, Monday the 20th of July is where it gets interesting. We’ve got a 7ft SSW groundswell in the morning, hitting 7ft in the afternoon, with a long period of 17 seconds. The wind is still cross-off from the SE at 15-18 mph, so it’s not perfect, but the swell energy is strong (2610 in the morning, 2367 in the afternoon). That long period means it’ll have real power and be best on this reef. It’s too big for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s a standout. The cross-off wind means it’s rideable, just not pristine.
Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd settle back a bit, with 6ft and 4ft SSW swells, still cross-off wind. The energy drops, and the quality stays marginal. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are poor – small 3-4ft swells, with the wind blowing. Not worth paddling out.
Saturday the 25th of July sees a slight bump to 4ft SSW swell, 15 seconds, with a gentler SE wind at 12 mph in the morning. The energy is moderate (1184). It’s the best of a weak bunch, but still not firing.
Now, Sunday the 26th of July is a mixed bag. Morning session has a 7ft SE swell, but the period is a short 8 seconds. The wind is a light ESE breeze at 9 mph, the closest we get to offshore. The energy is strong (1124). This short-period swell at a reef means it’ll be a bit messy and less organised, but the clean wind makes it a possibility. The afternoon drops to 3ft, so the morning is your window.
Monday the 27th of July is similar – a 5ft SE swell, still short period at 7 seconds, with a light SE breeze at 9 mph. The energy is moderate (833). The wind is good, but that short period will make it a bit of a close-out. The afternoon sees a tiny 2ft SSW swell with a very long 20-second period – barely breaking.
The second week gets more solid again. From Tuesday the 28th of July, we see 4ft to 6ft SSW swells, periods from 14-17 seconds, with moderate to strong energy (1561 to 1770). The wind is still cross-off from the SE, 15-18 mph. It’s consistent, but that wind is the main issue. The standout in this period is Saturday the 1st of August. We’ve got an 8ft SW groundswell, 18-second period, with very strong energy (4700 in the morning). That’s a proper pulse. The wind is cross-off from the SE at 18-21 mph, so it’s not clean, but for experienced surfers, that’s a lot of power. It’s too big for beginners, and the crowd factor is “sometimes” at Ekas-Outside, so you might have company. Sunday the 2nd of August is similar with 8ft SW swell, 16-17 seconds, but the wind picks up to 25 mph, making it rough.
Overall, the best bet is Monday the 20th of July for that 7ft SSW groundswell with 17 seconds, and the bigger pulse on Saturday the 1st of August with 8ft swell and 18 seconds. Both are for experienced surfers only, and the wind is a constant cross-off. The reef setup will handle the long-period swells well, but don’t expect perfect conditions.
Rusty.
