The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s be real – this run is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a solid stretch of groundswell coming through, but it’s constantly fighting a cross-off wind that’s going to keep things from being truly perfect. The standout window is the last few days of July into the start of August, when the size really winds up, but you’ll need to be picky about the timing.
We’re looking at Ekas-Outside, a reef break that’s fairly consistent. The water temp is sitting at 81° with an anomaly of about 1°, so it’s a little warmer than average for this time of year – nice and warm.
The first real surf kicks off on the morning of Friday, 17 July. Swell is 5 ft from the SW with a very long period of 15 seconds, so it’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is moderate to strong (1571). The wind is ESE at 12 mph, a cross-off, which is okay but not glassy. The morning is the better call. By the afternoon, the wind picks up to 19 mph and the quality drops. This pattern pretty much holds through the weekend and into Monday, 20 July. On Monday morning, the swell jumps to 7 ft from the SSW, period 17 seconds, and the energy is strong (2603). The wind is still a cross-off from the SE at 19 mph. It’s surfable and clean, but not clean enough to be a standout.
The swell slowly drops through Tuesday and Wednesday, with the period shortening. By Wednesday, 22 July, the conditions are poor and the score is zero – it’s not worth paddling out. Thursday and Friday are small and marginal.
Saturday, 25 July, shows a slight bump of 4 ft from the SSW with a 14-second period, but the wind is still cross-off. It’s a gamble.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Sunday, 26 July, is a weird one. The morning shows 7 ft from the SE, but the period is a short 8 seconds. That’s windswell, not groundswell, and combined with a cross-off at 16 mph, the quality is poor. The afternoon is even worse with 6 ft and a 7-second period – total chop. Avoid it.
The real standout is the end of the run. On Friday, 31 July, the swell pumps up to 8 ft from the SW with a 19-second period. The combined energy is very strong (3920). This is big, powerful groundswell. The wind is cross-off from the SE at 16 mph, which is still the same story, but the size and period will push through. The morning is your best chance. The swell holds at 7 ft into Saturday, 1 August, with a 16-17 second period. This is expert territory – over 8 ft in the afternoon, and it’s going to be a handful. The reef will handle the long period well, but it’s not for beginners. The crowd situation is “sometimes,” so you might have a few out, but with the size, it’ll thin out.
If you’re a strong surfer, that last Friday and Saturday are the best on offer. The rest of the window is a workable but not memorable cross-off grind.
Rusty.
