The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s shaking over the next couple of weeks.
The first real pulse of swell shows up on Tuesday the 18th of August. We’ve got a solid SW groundswell moving in, and the energy reading is strong at (2428). Water temp is 27°, which is about normal for the season.
The real standout is Wednesday the 19th of August. The morning at Benete is the one. We’re looking at a 8ft swell from the SW with a deep 18-second period – that’s proper long-period groundswell. The wind is dead calm, glassy, zero. Couldn’t ask for cleaner conditions. The energy is massive at (3610). This is a reef and point, so that long-period stuff will wrap in beautifully. It’s a bit meaty for the beginners at that size, but for the experienced crowd, it’s a no-brainer. It rarely breaks, so when it does, you’ve got to be there. Expect other folks to have the same idea.
The afternoon of the 19th pushes the swell to 8ft, still with the 18-second period, and the energy jumps to (4081). The wind goes cross-shore, so not as clean as the morning glass, but still very good for the advanced surfer.
The 20th of August offers another good window. The afternoon has a 8ft SW swell, 16-second period, and a clean cross-off breeze from the east. The energy is (3222). That’s a powerful wave. The mornings will be a bit more onshore, so hold out for the afternoon.
The 21st of August afternoon is also worth a look: 8ft from the SW with a 17-second period, clean cross-off wind, and energy at (3181). Similar story, just a touch smaller.
Into the second week, from the 24th of August, the swell backs off and the winds get more cross-shore or cross-onshore. The energy drops into the 1000-2000 range. It’s still surfable, but you’re looking at 5ft to 6ft waves with shorter periods, so it won’t have the same shape or punch. The 30th of August has a 4ft, 18-second period swell, but the wind is messy cross-onshore, so it’s a bit of a letdown.
The bottom line: that Wednesday the 19th of August morning is the one. Dawn patrol, glassy conditions, a rare break going off. Don’t miss it.
Rusty.
