The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got a long look at the surf ahead for Benete. This is a reef and point break that rarely breaks, so when it does, it’s a special deal. Water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We’ve got a solid stretch of swell coming through, starting from Wednesday the 19th of August. The first few days are a bit of a mixed bag, but the real standout is the Thursday afternoon session on the 20th. We’re looking at a clean 8 ft SW swell, with a very long period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the faces will be glassy and smooth. Combined wave energy is pumping at 3367 (moderate to strong), and while the break is for advanced surfers only, this is the pick of the early run. Just a heads up, with that long period, it might be a bit too straight for some, but on a reef and point, it should set up nicely.
Friday the 21st afternoon is another good one – 8 ft SW swell at 17 seconds, with that same light cross-offshore breeze. Clean again, and energy is 3162. Not quite as big as Thursday, but still a treat.
Now, from Saturday the 22nd through to Tuesday the 25th, the swell drops a touch, hovering around 6 ft to 7 ft, but the winds turn more cross-on or cross-shore, so conditions get a bit rippled. Still surfable for the experienced crew, but nothing like the earlier clean windows. Crowds are possible here, so keep that in mind.
We hit a lull from Wednesday the 26th into Thursday the 27th, with the swell dropping to 3 ft and energy falling away. Not much happening.
But hold on – Friday the 28th of August sees a big spike again, with 8 ft SW swell and 16-second period, energy at 2966. The wind is cross-on, so it’s a bit choppy, but that’s a heap of water moving. For the experts only, as it’s over 8 ft.
Then it fades again through the 29th and 30th, with smaller swells and onshore winds. Not worth paddling out for.
Looking further ahead into the first week of September, there’s a pulse of SW swell around the 31st of August and 1st of September. The 31st afternoon has 7 ft SW at 19 seconds, energy 3988 – that’s a serious amount of juice. Winds are light cross-shore, so it’s not perfect, but for a long-range forecast, it’s promising. The 1st of September morning sees 8 ft SW at 18 seconds, energy 3785. Again, light cross-shore winds. These are one for the advanced crew and worth keeping an eye on, but they’re a week and a half away, so don’t lock it in just yet.
Overall, the best bet is Thursday afternoon the 20th – that clean, long-period groundswell with light offshore wind is the standout. Friday the 21st afternoon is a close second. The rest of the run is a mix of average conditions or bigger, messier days. Remember, Benete rarely breaks, so when it does, you want to be on it. Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
