The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about it in feet and miles per hour.
We’re looking at Benete (Viet Nam), and for a spot that rarely breaks, this forecast is a proper event. It’s a reef and point set-up, so when it lines up, it lines up good.
The first real standout hits Thursday afternoon, August 20th. Water temp is about 80°F, which is dead average for the season – just your typical warm bath. We’ve got a solid 8ft swell from the southwest, with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is cranking at (3338), that’s strong wave energy. And the wind? Almost nothing – 5 mph out of the east-southeast, which is cross-offshore. That means clean, glassy faces. Perfect for experienced surfers. At over 8ft on a reef, this is not a beginner wave. But for the crew who can handle it, this is a rare treat.
The pattern settles into a solid run. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd see southwest to south-southwest swell hanging between 6ft and 8ft, still with those long periods of 15 to 17 seconds. The afternoons clean up nicely with that cross-off breeze, making Friday and Saturday afternoon (August 21st and 22nd) really good sessions.
From Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 25th, the swell backs off a bit, dropping to around 6ft to 7ft, and the wind turns more cross-shore or cross-on, bringing in some surface texture. It’s still rideable for the advanced crowd, but not as pristine.
We hit a lull mid-week. Wednesday the 26th drops to 5ft, and the energy falls way off. Thursday the 27th gets poor with choppy conditions. Not worth the paddle.
But then it builds again. Friday, August 28th swings back with a 8ft southwest swell and energy hitting (4160) – that’s very strong. The problem is a 15 mph south wind, cross-on, putting a bit of chop on it. It’s big and powerful, but bumpy. Only for the hardcore.
Waves stay in the 7ft to 8ft range through the end of August and into early September, but the wind stays mostly cross-on. The real beauty pops up on Wednesday morning, September 2nd. The swell is 7ft from the southwest, period 16 seconds, energy (2299), and the wind goes flat calm. Glassy. That morning is the best call for the second week – clean, powerful, and screaming.
So for the experienced surfer, the Thursday afternoon (August 20th) and the glassy Wednesday morning (September 2nd) are your standouts. That Wednesday morning might be the pick of the whole run. Remember, it rarely breaks here, so when it does, you make the call.
Rusty.
