Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up at Benete. This is a reef and point set-up that rarely breaks, so when it does, you better be ready. It’s an advanced wave, and with a SW-direction preference, it’s got a solid, long-period groundswell coming in from the SSW and SW over the next couple of weeks. The water’s sitting at a balmy 82°F, which is about average for this time of year—nothing weird there.
Now, the first few days are a bit of a tease. Monday the 6th has some waist-to-chest high swell, around 4ft from the SSW, with a long 17-second period. That’s a proper groundswell, but the cross-shore wind and moderate combined energy (1592) means it’s going to be lumpy and marginal. Not worth paddling out for. The same goes for Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th, where the swell pushes up to 6ft and 7ft, but the cross-winds make a mess of it. Thursday the 9th is more of the same – 7ft swell but still cross-shore. Honestly, the first week is a write-off for clean waves.
Then, things start to change. Friday the 10th afternoon sees the wind swing to a cross-offshore direction, and the swell holds at 6ft from the SW with a 16-second period. The combined energy is 1822 – solid moderate energy – and the clean conditions make this the first real standout. Saturday the 11th afternoon is even cleaner, with 5ft from the SW and a light cross-offshore breeze. It’s not huge, but it’s the best of the early days.
Sunday the 12th morning is a glassy gem – just 3ft from the SW, but with glassy conditions you can’t beat. The energy is low (682), so it’s a small, playful wave. Perfect for a longboard. The afternoon drops off.
Now, here’s the one to circle on your calendar: Monday the 13th afternoon. The swell drops to 3ft, but the period jumps to an insane 21 seconds – that’s a very long-period groundswell. And it’s clean with a cross-offshore breeze. For a reef and point like Benete, that long period is pure magic: the wave will stand up and offer long, peeling lines. The combined energy is 1135, still moderate, but the quality is top-notch. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook.
The following week has a few more promising windows. Tuesday the 14th afternoon is clean again with 6ft from the SSW at 17 seconds – strong energy (2312) – and that’s a serious session for experienced surfers. Wednesday the 15th afternoon is another cracker, with 6ft from the SSW, 16-second period, and clean conditions; the notes actually say “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” – that’s a rare shout. Thursday the 16th afternoon is clean with 5ft, and Friday the 17th afternoon is similarly clean, though a bit smaller. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are marginal again, with cross-onshore winds. Then Monday the 20th afternoon and Tuesday the 21st afternoon have clean conditions, but the swells drop to 4–5ft.
Overall, the best days are Monday 13th July afternoon for that ultra-long period glassy gem, and Wednesday 15th July afternoon for a punchier, cleaner swell. Don’t sleep on Tuesday 14th afternoon either – that’s a solid stand-up wave. The rest is either too windy or too small to get excited about. Remember, Benete rarely breaks, so when these windows align, you go.
