The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but let’s be honest, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The standout is a big, powerful groundswell hitting early, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Let’s get into it.

We kick off on Wednesday, 19th of August, with a pulse of energy that’s hard to ignore. The only real standout of the whole period is Mawi, a tricky reef break that’s only for the advanced crew. Wednesday morning sees a solid 8 ft swell from the southwest, with a super-long 18-second period. This is serious groundswell energy, and the combined energy reading of 3840 tells you there’s plenty of push. The wind is a clean cross-off from the ESE at 9 mph, so the surface will be glassy. The water temperature is about average for this time of year. This is the best on offer, pure and simple. Wednesday afternoon holds at 8 ft with the same SW direction and 18-second period, energy even ramping up to 4524, but the call is a little more marginal, likely due to the tide.

Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st keep the swell pumping, but the quality dips. Morning sessions on Thursday see 10 ft from the SW (16-second period) and Friday has 6 ft from the SW (15-second period). The wind stays cross-off, but the breeze picks up to 12 mph. The energy is still strong, sitting between 3329 and 4121, but the surf forecast notes are less enthusiastic. It’s still clean, but the conditions aren’t quite as perfect as that Wednesday morning window.

From Saturday the 22nd through to the end of the first week, the swell slowly backs off. Expect 7 ft to 8 ft from the SSW and SW, with periods dropping to 15-16 seconds. The wind stiffens to 16 mph, staying cross-off, so it’s still clean but with more texture. The energy drops from 2795 down to 1928. It’s surfable, but it’s not the same level of quality. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are particularly average.

The second week sees a real drop-off. From Tuesday the 25th through to Thursday the 27th, the swell hovers around 5 ft to 6 ft, with shorter periods around 13-14 seconds. The energy dips into the 900-1200 range, with a brief spike on Thursday afternoon, 27th of August, when a 6 ft, 19-second period SW swell kicks in, pushing energy to 3617. That late Thursday window is a promising little pulse, but it’s further out and less certain.

By Friday the 28th of August, we get another bump: 8 ft from the SSW with a 16-second period and energy of 3237. That’s a decent look, but the wind is a bit stronger. After that, it’s a slow taper into the first of September, with waves mostly in the 4 ft to 6 ft range and periods dropping to 12-14 seconds. The energy is weak, often under 1000. The last few days of the window into early September offer a little more size, around 6 ft to 6 ft from the SW with 16-17 second periods, and energy climbing back over 2000, but the wind is up to 19 mph, creating a fresh breeze and choppy conditions.

The bottom line: Wednesday morning, the 19th of August, is your best shot. That 8 ft, 18-second groundswell with clean offshore wind is a proper session. Just remember, Mawi is a shallow reef break for experts only. The rest of the window is a story of slowly declining quality, with a few interesting pulses—like the late Thursday the 27th and the Friday the 28th—that are worth keeping an eye on, but less of a sure thing.

Rusty.
