The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for us over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a slow burn, to be honest. The first week is more about building hope than firing up, but there's a legit pulse building for the back half of the run.

We're looking at Mawi, an advanced reef break that's exposed to the SW. The water is sitting at 81°, which is right about average for the time of year—nothing unusual there. The main story is that the wind is stuck in a cross-off pattern for the entire forecast. It's not the worst direction, keeping the surface fairly clean, but it's a solid breeze day after day, so that glassy, perfect morning vibe is not on the cards.

The first few days, from Friday the 17th through Sunday the 19th, are just underwhelming. We've got a weak pulse of SW swell running around 4ft to 5ft, but the swell period is pretty short—13 to 16 seconds—so the energy is just getting eaten up. The combined wave energy reading is in the moderate range, but it doesn't feel punchy. The calls on the surf are all "marginal," which is code for "don't get your hopes up." Honestly, that whole first weekend is a write-off unless you are desperate to get wet.

Monday the 20th sees a jump in size, with 7ft to 7ft SW swell rolling in with a solid 16 to 17-second period. That's a proper groundswell. However, the wind is still a stiff cross-off, and the scores still aren't there. It's not terrible, but it's not the standout.

The rest of that first week (Tuesday through Friday) just dribbles along with inconsistent SW pulses, a lot of waist-high stuff, and the same relentless cross-off wind. Combined energy drops back into the hundreds, which is weak. There are no good windows here.

Now, here is where it gets interesting. We skip ahead to Monday the 27th. The morning shows a tiny 3ft SSW swell, but the wind eases right back to a gentle breeze. This is the only window in the whole run that gets flagged as "expect very good surf conditions." The catch is that the swell is tiny, so you'll be on a longboard or a fish, but it will be the cleanest it gets all fortnight. That afternoon, the wind picks back up, and the scores plummet.

Holding out for the big dogs, the true standout window arrives at the very end of the month and into the first of August. Friday the 31st of July and Saturday the 1st of August. This is the one. We see a strong SSW pulse pushing through. Friday morning shows a 6ft SSW swell with an insane 21-second period, and the combined energy is pumping at 2685. That is serious energy. Friday afternoon bumps up to 8ft at 18 seconds with energy hitting 3762—that's strong. Then Saturday the 1st holds steady with 8ft SW swell at 17 seconds and energy at 3223. This is heavy, deep-water energy hitting an advanced reef. At this size (over 8ft on Saturday), this is strictly for experts. The wind is still cross-off, so it won't look like a postcard, but with that much period and size, Mawi is going to have some heavy, lined-up waves.

That last weekend is the only true standout. Just keep in mind we are looking at the first of August, so there is some natural uncertainty that far out, but the ingredients look serious.

Rusty.
