Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mawi over the next 16 days.
Alright, I’ll level with you – it’s been a bit quiet. But there’s some solid groundswell on the horizon. We’ve got Mawi as the only real player in the game for this outlook, and it’s a consistent, exposed reef that loves a decent SW swell. Water temp is sitting at 82°F with a 1°F anomaly, so it’s a touch warmer than average for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a nice little bonus for the early sessions.
We kick off Saturday, July 11th, with a clean afternoon. It’s not the best start – SSE wind at 16 mph making it cross-off, and a punchy 5ft SW swell (combined energy strong at 1132). The period is 14 seconds, so it’s a proper groundswell, but the wind’s a bit of a buzzkill; the waves will be lumpy. I wouldn’t race down for this one.
Sunday morning, July 12th, drops to 4ft (741) and the wind eases to 9 mph from the ESE – still cross-off, but way cleaner. That said, it’s marginal. By Sunday afternoon, the swell’s down to 3ft (455) and not doing much.
Same story through Monday, July 13th – 3ft on the morning, 3ft in the arvo with a long-period SSW pulse hitting 21 seconds, but energy’s low (926). That long period means it’ll be fat and walled at the reef. Not the day.
Now, Tuesday, July 14th is where it gets interesting. We’ve got a building 6ft SSW swell in the morning (2781 – moderate/strong energy) and it jumps to 7ft by afternoon (2906). Period’s 17-18 seconds – proper groundswell. Wind stays cross-off from the SE at 12-16 mph. For an advanced crew, this is game on. Mawi handles SW swell well, and this is solid. The afternoon should have some real grunt. It’s a standout.
Wednesday, July 15th, holds at 7ft in the morning (2337) but drops slightly to 6ft in the arvo (2006). Wind picks up to 19 mph by afternoon – fresh breeze. Still clean, but the wind’s starting to push. Still worth a paddle.
Thursday, July 16th, the swell backs off to 6ft (1332) and the wind is still 19 mph from the ESE. It’s surfable for strong paddlers but not a peak. Friday, July 17th, is dropping further – 5ft to 4ft (1300-1349). Saturday, July 18th, sits around 5ft (1253) with that same strong cross-off breeze. It’s tidy but not epic.
Sunday, July 19th, we get a spike in energy: 3ft in the morning with a 21-second period (1721) sounds weak but that period is huge. By afternoon, 6ft at 19 seconds (2663). The reef could get a bit walled with that period, but for experts, it’ll have some serious push.
The real standout for the second week? Monday, July 20th. Morning shows 8ft (3575 – strong energy) and afternoon holds 8ft (2830). Periods around 16-17 seconds. That is proper, heavy reef juice. The water’s clear, wind is cross-off at 19 mph – it’ll be clean and pounding. This is for experienced surfers only. Over 8ft is expert territory; at 8ft, it’s still solid but manageable if you know what you’re doing.
Tuesday, July 21st, drops to 6ft (1551) and continues a gradual fade through to Sunday, July 26th. The last few days (23-26 July) have a few pulses – 4ft to 8ft on Saturday, July 25th (3063), but winds stay fresh cross-off. It’s a consistent run but nothing crazy after that Monday peak.
If you’ve got the skills and the timing, the best windows are Tuesday, July 14th afternoon, and Monday, July 20th – especially the morning. That’s the one to circle. Mawi will have plenty of juice, and the water’s warm. Just don’t expect a beginner-friendly wave when it’s over 5ft, and this spot is a reef, so respect it.
Rusty.
