Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mawi over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Mawi. This reef setup is exposed to the SW swell window, and we’ve got a solid run of groundswell coming through. The water is sitting at 82°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The whole 16-day window is actually filled with surf, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The early part is frustrating. Thursday the 9th through Sunday the 13th, the swell is there, but the conditions are marginal. It’s not that the waves are tiny – we’re looking at 7 ft dropping to 3 ft – but the wind is a stiff cross-off from the ESE and SE, blowing 22 to 12 mph. That keeps the surface clean, but the wave quality is described as questionable. The energy is still pumping, with a combined swell energy reading of 2227 on Thursday morning, but the shape isn’t coming together for a good session. The period is a very long 15 to 16 seconds, which is classic groundswell energy, but at a beach break or a reef, that long period can make it break a bit too straight and shut down. It’s not a total loss, but it’s not the standout.
The best windows are actually the two bookends. The first real standout looks like Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th of July. The wind backs right off to a light SSE breeze at just 6 mph, which is basically glassy. The swell drops to a more manageable 5 ft to 3 ft, coming from the SW and SSW. The period is still long (12-15 seconds), so it’ll have good push. The combined energy is in the moderate range (594 to 657), and the guidance says “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the time to clear your schedule. For an advanced reef break, that clean, moderate swell with light wind is perfect.
The second smaller pulse of note is around the 14th to the 15th of July. The swell bumps back up to 6 ft to 7 ft, with a very long period of 17 to 18 seconds and combined energy hitting 2747. That’s a lot of water moving. But the wind is still a fresh 19 mph cross-off. It’s big, powerful, and clean, but at over 5 ft, it’s getting into expert territory, and the long period might make it tricky at the take-off. For the charger crew, it’s on, but it’s not the best all-rounder.
The rest of the second week, from the 17th to the 22nd, is consistent but nothing special. Swell hangs around 4 ft to 5 ft with moderate energy and a steady cross-off breeze. It’s surfable but not firing.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is that Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th. Light winds, clean lines, and a solid SW groundswell. That’s the one to aim for. The big swell around the 14th and 15th is for the experienced crew only. The rest is a consistent, workmanlike grind.
Rusty.
