Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Mawi has in store for the next couple of weeks. The water temp is sitting at a comfortable 82° with an anomaly of 2° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’s a touch on the warm side—nothing crazy, just a little above average.
Right from Friday the 3rd of July through to the end of the first week, we’ve got a solid, long-period groundswell rolling in from the SSW. Swell heights are consistently in the 6 ft to 7 ft range, with periods mostly between 15 and 17 seconds. That’s proper groundswell—lots of energy, decent shape potential, and long lulls between sets. The combined energy readings are all well into the four-digit zone, meaning strong wave energy throughout: Friday morning hits 1512, and builds from there. The wind is cross-off from the SE or ESE, 12 to 19 mph, which will keep things reasonably tidy. The real standout here is that this is a reef break for advanced surfers, so it’s not a spot for the faint-hearted. With these swell sizes, it’s going to be a serious wave.
The best window looks like Friday the 3rd of July morning through to Sunday the 5th of July afternoon—those days have the best balance of size, clean conditions, and that long-period energy between 14 and 16 seconds. Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th see the wind pick up to a fresh breeze of 19 mph, dropping the scores a notch but still offering solid waves in the 4 ft to 6 ft range with very long periods. Wednesday the 8th of July is a highlight for size, with the morning showing 6 ft from the SW and the afternoon pushing 7 ft, combined energy surging to 2649—that’s powerful surf, but maybe a bit much for all but the experienced crew.
Towards the weekend of the 11th and 12th of July, the swell drops off noticeably, with heights under 3 ft on the Sunday. But then it rebuilds. Monday the 13th sees an interesting pulse: a 3 ft swell with a 20-second period in the morning, building to 5 ft by the afternoon, energy jumping from 1164 to 1804. That long period will make it a proper reef wave, but watch for it to be a bit straight-running for beach breaks—not an issue at a reef like Mawi. The second week has a few more days of 5 ft to 6 ft SSW swell with moderate cross-off winds, but nothing quite as clean as the first week.
The one true standout in the whole period is Thursday the 16th of July morning. The data shows excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers, with 5 ft from the SW, a 15-second period, a gentle breeze of just 9 mph from the SE, and combined energy of 2046. That’s the pick of the bunch—clean, powerful, and manageable. The crowds here are only sometimes an issue, so you might get some waves to yourself.
Overall, the first week delivers the best, strongest, and most consistent waves, with the 3rd to the 5th of July being the top call. The second week is patchier but still has some promising windows, especially around the 14th and 16th of July. Keep an eye on the long-period swells—they’ll make Mawi a gem for the crew who know how to handle it.
Rusty.
