Gather round, crew. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for Mawi over the next couple of weeks. It’s a reef break for the advanced crew, pretty consistent, and it’s wide open to the swell. We’ve got a long period groundswell in the mix early, and the water is sitting at 82°—about average for this time of year.
Right off the bat, from Monday the 6th, it’s a bit of a frustrating start. We’ve got decent sized swell, 6 ft, coming from the SSW with a very long 16-second period, and a huge combined energy of 2102—that’s strong, powerful water moving. But the wind is a cross-off from the SE at 19 mph, which is fresh and keeps the surface clean, sure, but the forecast keeps calling it marginal. The swell hangs around 5 ft to 7 ft through that whole first week, all cross-off winds, energy staying in the 1000-2300 range. It’s clean, but nothing is jumping out as firing. Wednesday the 8th has the biggest push at 7 ft from the SSW with 15-second period and 2322 energy, but still that same 19 mph cross-off wind. It’s surfable for the experienced, but I wouldn’t call it a standout.
Then we hit a little lull. Saturday the 11th drops to 5 ft in the arvo, and Sunday morning the 12th is the first moment where the wind truly goes offshore—ESE at 12 mph, light enough to glass things up. Swell is down to 3 ft from the SW with 13-second period, energy at 811, moderate. The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions,” and I can feel it in my bones. That Sunday morning is the real gem of this first week—small but clean, well-shaped waves for the reef, and the crowd is only sometimes there, so you might get a few solo sets.
After that, it gets a bit messy again. Monday the 13th has a weird spike: 3 ft from the SSW but with a massive 21-second period and 1377 energy. That’s a super long groundswell, and on a reef like Mawi, it could hook up nicely, but the cross-off wind is back at 16 mph. It’s a maybe. Tuesday the 14th builds back to 5 ft with 18-second period and 2332 energy—lots of water moving, but the cross-off wind is still 19 mph.
The second week gets a bit more interesting, but it’s one for the optimists. Friday morning the 17th: swell drops to 5 ft from the SW, 14-second period, but the wind goes light—6 mph from the SSE, cross-off, and the energy hits 929. The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions” again. That’s promising, but it’s a week and a half out, so I’d keep an eye on it. Saturday morning the 18th is similar: 4 ft SW, 13-second period, gentle breeze at 9 mph, 665 energy—mellow and clean, another potential good one.
Sunday the 19th sees a jump back up to 7 ft from the SW with 16-second period and 2305 energy, but the wind is back to a fresh cross-off at 12-19 mph, so it’s big and powerful but not perfect. The rest of the run into the 21st holds 4-6 ft with moderate to fresh cross-off winds, and energy dropping into the 900s. Nothing to write home about.
The best on offer? Sunday morning, July 12th—offshore wind, clean lines, and that reef will be working even at 3 ft if you’ve got the patience. And a hopeful look at Friday morning, July 17th—gentle wind, nice swell angle, could be a sneaky good session if the long-range models hold.
Stay safe out there, and don’t sleep on that Sunday glass-off.
Rusty.
