Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Hey, Rusty here. We’ve got some solid swell heading into Mawi over the next couple of weeks. It won’t be firing every day, but there are a couple of windows where it all comes together. The water temp is sitting around 82°, which is about 2° warmer than average for this time of year – that’s already notable, so you’re in for a warm one.
The pattern starts right away. Saturday morning the 4th has a clean 6ft swell from the SSW with a long period of 16 seconds. That’s real groundswell, and with the combined energy reading strong at 1913, there’s plenty of push. Wind is a cross-off ESE breeze at 12 mph, keeping things tidy. The swell direction isn’t perfectly aligned with Mawi’s optimum SW, but you’ll still get some decent lines. Sunday morning the 5th is a bit better – 6ft from the SSW, period still 15 seconds, cross-off ESE at 9 mph, and a combined energy of 1779. This is the best of the first few days, with excellent conditions for experienced surfers. That long period will favour the reef set-up, giving you well-shaped, meaty waves with nice gaps between sets. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but crowds are possible, so choose your window.
Monday the 6th has similar swell around 6ft, but the wind picks up to 19 mph from the ESE, still cross-off, so it stays clean but gets a bit more bumpy. Energy is still moderate to strong at 1834. The size drops a little from Tuesday through Thursday, hanging around 5ft to 7ft, but the winds are consistently fresh cross-off from the SE at 16-19 mph. The combined energy values are solid, peaking at 2167 on Thursday morning the 9th. That’s a strong push of SSW swell at 7ft. But the wave comment calls it marginal for most of these days. It’s still clean, just not the kind of quality you’d make a long trip for unless you’re advanced and chasing something punchy.
The standout moment in the whole outlook is Saturday morning the 11th. Cross-off SE wind at 12 mph, 6ft SW swell with a period of 15 seconds, and combined energy of 1287. The direction is closer to Mawi’s ideal, giving you better shaped, more lined-up waves. It’s not as big as earlier days, but the quality is better, and for this reef break, that long-period SW groundswell will hold its form beautifully. This is the pick of the bunch – clean, powerful, and well worth a session.
After that, the swell fades. Sunday the 12th drops to 4ft, and by Monday the 13th we’re down to 2ft. The energy levels fall off a cliff, with combined readings under 800. Things get pretty quiet for a few days. However, mark your calendar for Tuesday morning the 14th. The wind turns offshore from the ESE at 16 mph, and you’ve got 4ft from the SSW at 13 seconds. It’s a modest swell, but with true offshore conditions, the wave quality jumps up. Combined energy sits at 1031, moderate but clean. It’s the best bet in the second week, and it’s excellent for experienced surfers. Light offshore and a workable swell – that’s a good, quiet session.
The rest of the second week stays small and mostly cross-off. Nothing else really grabs you. If you’re picking days, the early mornings on the 5th and 11th, plus the 14th, are your windows. The 4th is also worth a look if you want size, but the direction isn’t perfect.
Stay tuned, Rusty.
