The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down in feet and miles per hour. The only break in the game is Mawi, a reef that loves a SSW to SW angle. Water temp is pretty standard for this time of year. The whole forecast has “marginal” on every session, but that doesn’t mean it’s flat. There’s a bit of a wait for the real standouts, but the surf runs fairly consistent.
Starting August 22: Saturday morning sees a 8ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, combined wave energy at 2731 – that’s serious power. Wind is a 15 mph SE cross-off, so clean but big. This is advanced only; over 8ft is expert territory. Saturday afternoon and Sunday hold 7ft to 7ft, similar period, energy still in the thousands. Monday August 24 eases to 7ft.
The big standout is Friday August 28. Morning: 8ft SSW swell, 16 seconds, energy at a huge 3881. The strongest energy of the whole run. Wind is a moderate cross-off at 15 mph, clean but heavy. Afternoon is 8ft SW. This is for experts only.
Tuesday September 1 is the next standout: afternoon delivers 7ft SW swell, a very long 19-second period, energy at 3706. That’s a proper groundswell, perfect for Mawi’s reef. Wednesday September 2 keeps up with 8ft SW, 17 seconds. These two days in early September are your best bet for quality, though they are a bit further out.
Crowds are “sometimes” so you won’t have it to yourself, but it won’t be a madhouse.
For the best of the best, hit Friday August 28 for raw power and Tuesday September 1 for that long-period perfection. The rest is clean but not as memorable.
Rusty.
