Hey, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Mawi.
Alright, looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The swell is pretty much constant, but the wind is a real issue. It’s gonna be a cross-off breeze pretty much the whole time, which isn’t terrible, but it’s not the clean, glassy perfection we all dream of. The water’s sitting at 82°, which is about average for this time of year, so no dramas there.
The first real pulse kicks off Tuesday afternoon, July 7th, with a solid 5ft SSW groundswell at a very long 15 seconds. That’s packing a decent punch, with moderate wave energy (1048). The trouble is that 19 mph cross-off wind from the SE. It’s clean, but that wind is going to put some bump on the surface. It’s an advanced reef break, so it’s not for the faint-hearted anyway, and with that size and period, it’ll be a handful.
Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th see the swell building to 7ft, still from the SSW/SW with that long 15-second period. Wave energy jumps into the strong range (up to 2322). This is serious, heavy water. Only for experts. That 19-22 mph wind is still locking in, so it’s going to be a battle. The ride might be epic, but the paddle out will be a workout.
The weekend of the 11th and 12th, the swell drops a touch, down to 5-3ft, and the period shortens up to 13-14 seconds. The wind drops to a more manageable 9-12 mph on Sunday morning. That Sunday morning, the 12th, is probably your best chance at something user-friendly, with a clean 3ft swell. It’s still a cross-off, but gentler.
The real standout, though, is a weird one. Look at Tuesday the 14th. The swell is only 4ft in the morning, but the period is a massive 19 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell. The energy reading is huge at 2715, but that’s because of the crazy period, not the height. For a reef like Mawi, that kind of long period can produce some beautifully lined-up, powerful waves. However, the wind is still a fresh 19 mph cross-off. It’s a gamble, but if the wind eases, it could be the session of the fortnight.
The rest of the run into the 22nd keeps the 3-6ft SSW swell ticking over, with the wind staying in that moderate to fresh cross-off range. Nothing will be perfect, but it’s consistently surfable for those who know the reef.
If I had to pick the one true standout, I’d say the long-period pulse on the morning of Tuesday, July 14th. It’s a proper, grunty groundswell with a period that’ll make the waves stand up tall and relentless. The wind is the only thing holding it back from being a 10/10. For a more reliable, smaller option, the morning of Sunday, July 12th looks the cleanest and most manageable.
Rusty.
