The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Mawi’s got cooking for us.
Right off the bat, we’re looking at a run of surf that's just... there. It’s not bad, but it’s not setting the world on fire either. The entire 16-day window is filled with signals that are tagged as marginal—tide issues or just not quite clicking into gear. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises there from a warmth perspective.
The real headline is that the whole stretch is dominated by a persistent cross-offshore breeze. It’s not the glassy offshore we dream of, but it’s clean enough to keep the faces tidy. The trouble is the wave energy. We kick off on Thursday the 16th of July with a solid 6ft SSW groundswell (15 second period) and a hefty combined energy reading of 1324—moderate to strong energy, no doubt—but the conditions are still labelled marginal. That theme carries right through.
The first real standout, and the only one I’d get excited about, lands on Monday the 20th. Mawi sees a jump to 7ft of SW groundswell with a long 17 second period. That’s proper groundswell for the reef. Combined energy hits 2871, which is strong. The wind stays cross-off from the SE at 19 mph. That’s a solid session for advanced surfers, but at 7ft, beginners should stay well clear. The long period means longer waits between sets, but when they come, they’ll have punch. That Monday morning is the best on offer, no question.
After that, things taper off. Tuesday the 21st still has some size at 6ft, but it drops steadily through the week. By the end of July, we get another flicker on Friday the 31st—7ft SW groundswell again, with 16 second period and energy at 2560. That’s a promising long-range call, though still a bit uncertain that far out. It’s the only other sizeable bump in the whole outlook.
Between the 22nd and the 30th, it’s a long grind of 4ft to 4ft swell with mostly fresh breeze. Not much to write home about. That’s a solid week or more of small, marginal surf. It’s not a total shutdown, but you’d be scratching for a decent wave unless you’re happy with small, clean lines.
So here’s the takeaway: Mawi is an exposed reef that’s fairly consistent, and crowds are possible even when it’s small. The best bet is Monday the 20th—get on it early. That Friday the 31st is a promising far-off prospect but keep your expectations in check. For everything else, it’s clean but ordinary.
Rusty.
