The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the outlook for the next couple of weeks. It’s a pretty straightforward run of surf, but it takes a little while to get going. The first few days are on the smaller side, but the wind is a bit of a factor. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no shock to the system there.
The standout option here is Mawi. This is a solid reef break, so it needs a bit of size and a good direction to really fire. It’s exposed to the swell, and the optimum swell direction is from the SW, which is what we get a lot of. The first few days from Monday, 24th of August, through Wednesday, are pumping at around 6 ft to 7 ft, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off from the ESE. It’s clean, but that wind is strong, making it a bit of a battle. The combined energy is moderate to strong, with readings of 2023 and 1833. It’s not the best quality, but it’s surfable.
The real action starts to build from Friday, 28th of August. That morning, we’ve got a solid 10 ft SSW swell with a 17-second period. That’s a long period groundswell, which means proper power and shape. The wave energy jumps to 4328, which is strong. The wind is still a cross-off from the SE, but it’s down to 12 mph, which makes it a bit more manageable. The afternoon drops to 8 ft, but still a good 16-second period. This is the pick of the entire run. It’s going to be a big, powerful wave, so this is for experienced surfers only. The reef setup will handle the long period swell well, but it will be big and punchy.
After that, the swell drops back through the weekend and into the start of September, with 5 ft to 7 ft swell from the SW. The wind stays steady from the SE at 12-16 mph, keeping it cross-off and clean. The energy is moderate, with readings around 1000-1700. It’s consistent, but nothing special.
The next notable uptick comes around Tuesday, 1st of September, and Wednesday, 2nd of September. The swell builds back to 7 ft to 7 ft from the SW, with a solid 17-second period. The wind on Wednesday morning drops to just 9 mph, which is a gentle breeze, making it the cleanest of the whole run. The energy is up around 2600-2700, which is strong. This is another good window, but it’s not quite as big as that Friday peak. It’s a nice, solid, powerful swell.
The last week of the outlook, from the 4th of September onwards, settles into a very consistent 5 ft to 6 ft SSW to SW swell, with periods around 14-15 seconds. The wind is a steady 12-16 mph cross-off. It’s just a long, clean, consistent run of decent surf. Not a single standout, but plenty of waves to be had.
The main thing to watch is the wind. It’s cross-off the whole time, which is good, but the strength varies. That Friday, 28th of August, is the big one. The 10 ft swell with that long period is the clear highlight. The following Wednesday, 2nd of September, is also a fine day with the lighter wind and good size. For the rest of it, it’s just a solid, workmanlike run of surf.
Rusty.
