The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, checkin’ out the forecast for Mawi. This is a solid exposed reef that’ll be runnin’ for a while, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The wind is SE pretty much all the time, which is cross-off here – keeps it clean, but it ain’t glassy. The swell energy bounces around, and the scores aren’t high enough to get truly fired up. The best bet looks like the tail end of the period, with a couple of mornings that could be real good.

We start on Monday, 20th July, with a SW swell at 7ft to 7ft, but it’s a long-period groundswell around 17 seconds. That’s a heap of energy – 2767 (combined energy of all swells directed here) – so it’s got some weight. That size and period makes it an advanced-only spot. The wind is a fresh 35 km/h, cross-off, so it’s clean but windy. The water temp is about average for the time of year.

The surf drops off through the week. Tuesday, 21st July, is still 6ft and 6ft with 14-second periods, but the energy slips to 1470. Still clean, still a cross-off breeze, but the quality is marginal. By Wednesday, 22nd July, we’re down to 5ft and 3ft, with energy of 836. The swell direction is more SSW, so it’s still wrappin’ in, but it’s losin’ steam. Thursday and Friday are a bit flat, with 4ft and 4ft, and the energy drops to 665. Not worth paddlin’ out for.

The weekend of 26th-27th July sees a shift. On Sunday, 26th, the swell comes from the SE, which is not the optimum direction for Mawi (we want SW). It’s short-period too, only 8 seconds, so it’ll be weak and messy. The morning of Monday, 27th July, is actually the standout here. The swell is 6ft from the SE, but the period is still short at 8 seconds, and the energy is 904. The wind drops to a light 10 km/h, and the forecast says "expect very good surf conditions." It’s still not the right direction, but the light breeze will make it look a lot better. That’s your best bet for a session, even if it ain’t classic Mawi.

After that, we go back to a SW groundswell pattern from 28th July onward, but it’s inconsistent. The swell bounces between 4ft and 5ft, with periods of 14-16 seconds, and the energy is moderate, around 877 to 1156. The wind stays a fresh 25-30 km/h. It’s clean, but nothin’ special. The real hope is the first few days of August. On Saturday, 1st August, we get a 6ft SW swell in the morning, buildin’ to 7ft by afternoon, with a 15-16 second period. The energy jumps to 1849 and 2313 – that’s some proper grunt. The wind is a gentle 15 km/h in the morning, then a moderate 20 km/h in the arvo. That Saturday morning session is the best-quality swell of the whole run, with a solid SW direction and a long period that’ll draw some nice lines. It’s a bit over 7ft, so it’s for experienced surfers only. Sunday, 2nd August, is similar at 7ft and 6ft, with energy of 1828, still a good option. From Monday, 3rd August, it starts to fade again.

So, the standout is the morning of Monday, 27th July, for the light winds, and the morning of Saturday, 1st August, for the best swell. Crowds are possible here – it does get a few people. Mawi is a reef break, so it handles the long-period SW swells well, but it’s fair to say it’s inconsistent overall. There’s a bit of a gap in the middle of the week where it’s not worth it, but the run kicks off with a bang and finishes with a decent one. Keep an eye on that first week of August.

Rusty.
