The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Mawi.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but honestly, the conditions are going to be a mixed bag. The standout window is clear: Wednesday morning, the 15th of July. That’s when we see the best of it. We’ve got a solid 7ft SSW groundswell rolling in with a very long 16-second period, and the wind is light offshore from the ESE at 12 mph. That’s going to produce clean, lined-up waves at Mawi (Bali). The combined energy is pumping at 2270, so there’s plenty of power. This is advanced reef break territory, so only for the experienced crew. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
After that Wednesday morning peak, the wind swings more cross-offshore and picks up to 15–19 mph from Thursday through the rest of the first week. The swell drops a touch but stays in the 5ft to 5ft range with a solid 15-second period, so there’s still decent wave height and shape. The issue is that constant cross-off breeze will keep the surface a bit bumpy, not glassy. The energy stays moderate (around 1000–1700). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.
By the weekend of the 18th and 19th, the swell eases further to around 4ft–5ft, and the period drops to 13–14 seconds. The wind is still a fresh 19 mph cross-off. The energy dips into the 900–1100 range. It’s marginal, but you could still get a few if you're keen.
Then there’s a bit of a lull early the following week before a new pulse arrives on Monday the 20th of July. That morning we see a 7ft SW groundswell with a very long 17-second period, pumping energy at 2835. But the wind is cross-offshore at 19 mph, so it’s not going to be clean like the 15th. The power is there, but the conditions will be messy. This is a promising but less certain long-range option—if the wind eases, it could be a cracker.
The rest of the second week remains in the 4ft to 6ft range with cross-off winds, and the energy fluctuates. The 25th of July has another 6ft SSW swell, but again, fresh cross-off wind. Nothing really stands out as a must-surf day after the 15th.
Overall, if you can get to Mawi early on Wednesday the 15th, you’ll score the best conditions of the whole 16-day window. After that, it’s all about dealing with the cross-off breeze and picking the smaller, cleaner windows.
Rusty.
