The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve only got one spot on the radar for this whole stretch, and that’s Mawi. It’s a reef slab that’s exposed and picks up the SW groundswell nicely, but be warned, this one’s for the advanced crew. The water’s sitting at 80°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, no surprises there.

The run starts on Tuesday the 18th of August. We’ve got a clean 5ft SSW swell pushing through with a 16-second period, and the energy is strong at (2314). Morning’s looking your best bet with a light cross-off breeze, making for some crisp, hollow walls. The afternoon bumps up to 6ft and the breeze picks up a bit, so it stays clean but just loses a touch of that magic.

Wednesday the 19th is where things start to get properly juicy. The swell jumps to 8ft, still from the SW, and the period stretches out to 18 seconds. That’s some serious groundswell energy, reading (3835) in the morning and even more by the arvo at (4510). With a gentle cross-off breeze all day, this is the standout of the first week. The waves will be big, powerful, and lining up on that reef. Not one for the faint-hearted, but if you know what you’re doing, this is the one to be on.

Thursday the 20th sees the swell peak at a solid 10ft in the morning, still with a 16-second period. It’s a lot of water moving, and even though the wind stays clean, this is proper expert-only territory. The afternoon backs off slightly to 8ft but remains full-on.

From Friday the 21st through the next week, we’ve got a steady pulse of SSW/SW swell in the 6ft to 8ft range. It’s consistent, clean, and cross-off winds keep the surface tidy. The energy stays in the moderate to strong zone, reading between (1900) and (3500). It’s all surfable for the experienced, but the quality is a step down from Wednesday’s peak. The crowd thing at Mawi is worth mentioning – it can get busy, so be ready for a packed line-up on the better days.

There’s a bit of a lull around the 26th and 27th of August, with the swell dropping to 4ft to 5ft. Still rideable on the sets, but the energy fades and it loses its spark.

Then, towards the end of the month, we see things starting to build again. The 30th of August looks fantastic – a strong 8ft SW swell with an 18-second period and light winds. Energy is back up to (3559). This is another one for the calendar. And then into September, the 1st and 2nd look to have that same big, powerful groundswell, pushing 10ft with periods of 17-18 seconds. The energy readings are huge, around (5100) and (5000). These are definitely the other standout days of the whole period, but they’re further out, so treat them as promising rather than guaranteed. The mornings on the 1st look better with a moderate breeze before the fresh stuff kicks in later.

Overall, the pick of the bunch is Wednesday the 19th of August, with that clean, building SW swell. The other one to circle is Sunday the 30th of August and the start of September for those big, long-period groundswells. Just remember, when it’s over 8ft, only the experts need apply. For the rest, that mid-period stuff in the 6ft range will keep you happy.

Rusty out.
