The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here again, but in feet and miles for the stateside crew.
Let’s be straight about Charpencaye. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for the most part. That east wind is going to be a constant headache, blowing cross to cross-onshore and chopping the surface up. The swell is around, but it’s short-period windswell that just can’t get it together on this exposed reef. The combined energy is moderate, hitting 214 on the 23rd, but the conditions are poor.
The first real chance of something decent is Sunday, the 30th of August. We get a proper groundswell with a 15-second period and a combined energy of 683. The swell is running 3ft to 4ft from the east, but the wind is still cross-shore. It’s a marginal call, but it’s the first light in a dark tunnel. The water is warm at 84°F, about average for the time of year.
The clear standout is Monday, the 31st of August. The swell jumps to 7ft from the ENE with a 12-second period, and the combined energy is a strong 1090. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the ESE. This is the biggest and most powerful swell of the whole forecast, but 7ft is big for this spot – that’s expert territory. The longer period should give it some shape, though on a reef it can run a bit straight. This is the day to target if you’ve got the skills.
After that, it’s back to the grind. The wind stays onshore or cross, the period drops back to 7-8 seconds, and the energy fades. The first week of September is a total washout with moderate cross-onshore breeze and choppy waves. The east wind doesn’t let up.
So, bottom line: if you’re going to paddle out, make it Monday, the 31st. The Sunday before is a decent consolation prize. The rest of the run is a long, frustrating gap with nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
