The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at the next 16 days for Carana. I gotta level with you straight up – this isn’t a period to get excited about. The overall pattern is flat and quiet, with barely a ripple in the water for the entire stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell.

The first few days, starting Thursday the 13th, see a tiny little pulse of north-northeast swell sneaking in. We’re talking a mere 0.7ft of swell with an 11-second period. The combined wave energy is really low, just 12 (weak). The water temp is sitting at 81° which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. But honestly, don’t bother paddling out. The wind is blowing a moderate breeze from the south-southwest, creating some messy cross-off conditions. The surf is labelled as poor, and it gets a zero. There’s nothing for a surfer here.

By Saturday the 15th, the swell drops even further to 0.3ft, with the period shortening to 10 seconds. The energy bottoms out to just 4 (weak). The easterly winds are still making it look clean but tiny. This pathetic little knee-high dribble carries on through into the middle of the next week, always on the north-east quadrant, always with weak energy. We get a few days with no swell at all from Sunday the 16th onward, creating a real gap in the action.

Heading towards the end of the third week of August, there’s a chance of some thunderstorms around the 20th, but it doesn’t change the fact the swell is still 0.3ft or flat. The wind stays up from the southeast or south-southeast, in the 18 to 22 mph range, which would make the surface choppy. Honestly, with those conditions, a beach setup like this looks way more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

The rest of the forecast, right through to the 28th of August, is a wasteland. The surf is consistently rated as poor, the swell is either non-existent or 0.3ft, and the energy readings are all below 10. There is literally nothing to recommend. Carana rarely breaks anyway, so this kind of blank run is just par for the course here. It’s a total right-off for the whole 16 days. Keep the board in the car; wait for a change in the charts.

Rusty.
