The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. I've looked over the numbers for the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be honest with you, this is a tough one. We're looking at a real dry spell for Capo Bianco on Elba. There's a massive gap right at the start with absolutely nothing on offer for the first few days. The first real chance of a wave doesn't even show up until Saturday the 19th, and even then, it's barely a ripple.

For the morning of Saturday the 19th, we might see a tiny 1 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 8, so it's pretty weak. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SE though, so if you're truly desperate for a splash, the conditions will be clean. That afternoon, the wind swings more offshore from the south and it stays glassy, but the swell is still just 1 ft. This pattern of tiny, weak WNW swell lingers through Sunday the 20th, with the combined energy barely climbing to 8. That Sunday afternoon, the wind goes glassy from the SE, which is nice, but we're still talking about knee-high slop at best.

Then we hit a real dead zone. From Monday the 21st through to the 24th of July, the swell is practically non-existent, or it's coming from a bad direction with strong, messy winds. On the 24th, we get a spike in the swell height to 5 ft from the NNE, with a combined energy of 138, which is moderate. But it's accompanied by a strong 25 mph cross-onshore wind from the NE. That's going to be a complete washing machine, blown out and choppy. That setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than for paddle surfing.

The second week offers very little hope. The period from the 25th of July all the way through to the 1st of August is a write-off. The swell is miniscule, mostly under 2 ft, and the wind is either onshore, cross-onshore, or just not playing nice. The only mention of a proper offshore wind is on the 25th of July afternoon, with a 12 mph SSE breeze, but the swell is only 1 ft with a 4-second period and an energy of 2. It's clean, but there's nothing to ride. The last day we see, the 1st of August, has a 2 ft swell from the NW, but it's cross-onshore and choppy. Honestly, there are no standouts here. The water temperature is a very unusual 83°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only thing out of the ordinary.

So, to put it plainly, there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. Capo Bianco is a point break that rarely breaks at the best of times, and this forecast confirms it. The whole period is a bust. Don't waste your time checking the buoys; the forecast is clear. For an area that's this inconsistent, a blank run like this is more normal than you'd think. Keep an eye on the charts, things can change, but for now, the boards stay in the shed.

Rusty.
