Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Tauranga Bay over the next couple weeks. Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet spell overall, so don’t go cancelling your plans just yet. We’ve got one standout window that’s worth circling on the calendar, but the rest is mostly just small and choppy or blown out.
The main event kicks off on Sunday the 5th. That morning, a clean 4ft easterly swell rolls in with a light offshore cross-off breeze from the SW. Looks like 450 (moderate energy) behind it, and the water temp is sitting about average for the time of year, so it won’t feel any different. This is the pick of the whole run. A beginner-friendly break with consistent waves, and it’s rarely crowded.
From there, things drop off. Monday the 6th sees a stormy risk with strong onshore wind, dropping the swell to 3ft. Tuesday the 7th has a messy 6ft N windswell in the morning, but the period is short at 8 seconds, and the wind is onshore – not recommended for anyone. Wednesday through to Friday the 10th stays small, around 2ft to 3ft, with offshore winds keeping the surface tidy, but the wave energy is weak (between 84 and 135) and the size just doesn’t get you moving.
Saturday the 11th is another small day – 3ft but choppy on the afternoon cross-shore. Then Sunday the 12th morning brings a spike to 6ft from the ESE with 978 energy (strong) and clean conditions, but it’s considered marginal with some tide issues – likely closeouts and not much shape for a beach setup. That swell’s period is long at 10 seconds, so there’ll be some energy, but it might be hard work.
The rest of the second week limps along with 2ft to 4ft surf, mostly poor quality or blown out by northerly wind, until the 16th there’s a tiny 3ft clean window that’s really just small and ordinary. By the 17th it’s barely 1ft. There’s a bump of 4ft to 4ft on the 18th and 19th, but with fresh to strong offshore breeze – clean as a whistle but lacking the push.
If you’re a beginner, the Sunday the 5th session is your one solid chance. The rest is small and mostly disappointing, especially if you’re after any real power. For the experienced crew, not much to get excited about here – the bigger days are short-period windswell or questionable tide windows.
Rusty.
