Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tauranga Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty coming to you from the beach. Let’s get into it.
We’ve got a 16-day window here, but honestly, it’s a slow start. The first few days are all about small, ordinary waves with average conditions. Nothing to get excited about until we hit the back half of the week. The standout is a solid pulse of energy arriving on Sunday the 19th. That’s your best bet.
For the first few days, Friday the 10th through to the end of the following week, it’s all about small, clean but weak surf. Tauranga Bay is seeing a consistent 3 ft swell from the ESE, with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined swell energy is moderate (221). The water temp is sitting at 62°, which is pretty normal for this time of year. That offshore wind on Friday afternoon is a positive, but the waves are just ordinary. Saturday morning sees a drop to 3 ft with light offshore winds, making for clean, but small, conditions. The afternoon turns cross-shore, so it gets messy. Sunday morning offers similar 3 ft swell with cross-offshore winds, keeping it clean, but still small. By Monday, it’s dropping off fast, with the swell fading to 2 ft and winds turning onshore, making it a write-off. Tuesday is even smaller, barely 2 ft from the NW, and the energy is weak (50). Wednesday is a total dud with a 0.7 ft swell and glassy conditions, but nothing to ride. Thursday the 16th offers a brief uptick to 3 ft from the NW with cross-offshore winds, but it’s still ordinary.
The real action kicks off on Sunday the 19th. That morning, we’ve got a 5 ft swell from the East, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (308). The wind is offshore and moderate, so the waves will be clean and punchy. This is the best on offer. The afternoon sees the same 5 ft swell, but the wind picks up to 25 mph from the south. That’s strong offshore, which will keep it clean, but it’ll be a battle to paddle into. This is only for experienced surfers. The energy is even higher (369). That’s your standout.
After that, Monday the 20th drops back to 2 ft from the NE, and the rest of the week is small and ordinary again. There’s a little bump on Wednesday the 22nd with 3 ft from the East, but it’s nothing special. The final weekend, the 25th, shows a 3 ft swell from the NNE with glassy conditions, but it’s very weak energy (62). Not a highlight.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off for real surf. The only day worth pointing your car at is Sunday the 19th. Get on it early for the best conditions before the wind goes nuclear. The rest of the period is a waiting game.
Rusty out.
