The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Tauranga Bay's got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
We're in for a long, slow start. The first week or so is pretty flat and uninspiring, with only tiny waves and dodgy winds. The real action doesn't kick off until the end of the month and into September, but even then, it's a mixed bag with some solid size but messy conditions.
The water temp is sitting at 61°, which is pretty much bang on for this time of year – nothing unusual there.
The first real highlight in this whole stretch looks like Friday morning, the 29th of August. We've got a clean 2 ft swell from the NE, with a light offshore breeze from the SSE. It's small, but it'll be clean and fun for getting a few turns in on a longboard or a fish. The energy is weak (71), but the conditions will be glassy and inviting.
After that, the surf starts to build. Sunday the 30th of August morning has a bit more push with a 3 ft swell from the NE, still with a clean offshore wind. The energy is starting to pick up (141). Then we get into a prolonged pulse of NE swell early next week. The morning of Monday the 1st of September is worth a mention – 4 ft from the ENE with a clean cross-off breeze and moderate energy (264). It's not the best of winds, but it's rideable.
The real standout, though, is the end of the run. Friday the 4th of September afternoon sees a serious jump in size – a powerful 12 ft swell from the NNE, but with a short, choppy period of 8 seconds. The energy is off the charts (2650), but this is for experts only. The wind is a strong cross-shore, so it's going to be a lumpy, challenging beast. Honestly, at that size and with that wind, this setup might be more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off for any decent waves. The best bet for a clean, manageable session is the morning of the 29th of August. If you're an expert looking for a challenge, keep an eye on the 4th of September, but be prepared for a wild, messy, and powerful ocean.
Rusty, signing off.
