Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tauranga Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here with the lowdown on Tauranga Bay.
We’ve got a slow start. From Wednesday through the weekend, the surf is just hanging in there. Small waves from the ESE, around 2ft to 3ft, but the energy is low to moderate. A few windows of offshore wind, but the waves are just “surfable but very ordinary.” Not exactly a call to action.
Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are rough. A messy northerly wind messes things up, and while Tuesday shows a bump to about 5ft, it’s short-period garbage from the N. A beach break like this won’t hold that chop.
Then, the real highlight. Thursday the 16th of July morning. We’re looking at clean 2ft waves from the ESE, but the period hits 17 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, with good energy (339). The wind is light offshore from the SE, making for glassy conditions. It’s a consistent, beginner-friendly spot, and with crowds rare, you could have it quiet. Water temp is around 62°, which is normal for this time of year.
After that, it’s a wipeout. Strong cross-shore winds from the ENE kick in from Friday the 17th, blowing hard and bringing messy, lumpy conditions. The swell builds to 6ft to 10ft by the 19th and 20th, with energy readings over 1200, but the wind ruins everything. This stretch looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
In short, the whole 16-day window is thin, but Thursday the 16th of July morning is your best bet. Small, clean, and that long-period pulse will be a treat.
Rusty.
