Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s break down Tauranga Bay. It’s a rough start, and honestly, we’re looking at a long, quiet spell ahead. For a spot that usually gets some action, this run is mostly a waiting game.
We begin on Tuesday, July 7th, with a bit of a pulse that just doesn’t work. The morning is a mess – a strong 30 km/h NNW wind and a poor-quality 4 ft swell from the NNW. The afternoon glass-off is nice, but the swell drops to 3 ft and the wave energy is just moderate (631). It’s still not good.
Then the bottom falls out. From Wednesday the 8th onward, we’re looking at tiny 2 ft to 2 ft waves from the east-southeast for days. The winds are mostly cross-offshore and clean, but there’s no power behind them. Wave energy is a paltry 116-172. You’d be lucky to find a ride.
That pattern holds until Friday the 10th, when the wind finally goes clean offshore from the south (15-20 km/h). The swell is a consistent 2 ft from the ESE at 10 seconds. Wave energy climbs to 190 – it’s still small, but it’s clean and surfable for a beginner or a longboarder. Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th offer more of the same: small, clean, and very ordinary. Water temp is average for the time of year.
We hit a real dead zone from Monday the 13th through the rest of the week. Swell drops below 2 ft, wave energy falls as low as 22, and the wind turns onshore or cross-shore and lumpy. Nothing at all to paddle for.
Finally, on Sunday the 19th of July, we get a glimmer. A 2 ft ESE swell, 9-second period, with clean offshore wind from the south-southwest at 10 km/h. Wave energy is 184. It’s small, but it’s clean and rideable – a reward for the patient.
Looking further out, Tuesday the 21st shows a 4 ft pulse from the north-northeast, but it’s ruined by a strong 30 km/h onshore wind. The most interesting thing is Wednesday the 22nd of July: a big 10 ft north swell at 10 seconds. That’s very heavy wave energy (6013). The wind is a gentle cross-onshore, so it might be bumpy and marginal. That size is for experts only, and it’s a long way off – something to keep an eye on, but not bank on.
The only real standout in this entire forecast is the clean stretch from Friday the 10th through Sunday the 12th. It’s small, but it’s the only consistently clean, surfable window on offer.
Rusty.
