The Lowdown
Right, mate, Rusty here. Gotta be honest with you – it’s a quiet stretch ahead for Tauranga Bay. Let’s be straight, the first decent chance of a paddle doesn’t show up until Friday morning, July 17. Before that, Thursday the 16th is a total flat day, with only 1 foot of weak, poor-quality slop. You’d be better off waxing your board at home.
Come Friday morning, July 17, we finally see a pulse of life. That’s your best bet in the whole 16-day window. The swell pushes to 2 feet, coming out of the east-southeast on a long 17-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy, and it’s packing moderate power with a combined energy of 220. That long period will create some nicely shaped, lined-up waves, perfect for a beginner-friendly spot like this. The morning wind is a light SSW breeze at 3 mph, giving us cross-offshore conditions, so the faces should be clean. It’s a rare day here where it all lines up. Get on it.
The rest of the outlook is a real mixed bag of ankle-biters and ordinary conditions. Saturday the 18th sees similar 2.3-foot swell, but the wind is a bit more cross-shore. Sunday the 19th drops back to 1.6 feet, and the energy fades quickly. By Monday the 20th, we’re back to tiny 1.3-foot waves and glassy conditions in the morning, but the swell is weak. For the rest of next week and into the following week, from July 21 onward, the swell stays small – under 1.6 feet – with short, weak periods. The combined energy values drop to two-digit numbers (under 100), which tells you the ocean just doesn’t have any push. There are long gaps of nothing, and most days the conditions are either poor or just average. The wind gets up strong and onshore from the 27th onward, making a mess of things.
So, the standout is clear: Friday morning, July 17, is your window. It’s not huge, but it’s got quality, a nice long-period groundswell, and clean conditions. The rest of the forecast is a write-off for a proper surf.
Stay tuned.
