Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tauranga Bay over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk Tauranga Bay. This spot is a beginner-friendly, consistent wave that’s fairly exposed to the open ocean, and it usually handles a decent NE swell. Looking at the next 16 days, the first week is a bit of a write‑off – small, weak, and mostly onshore or cross‑onshore winds. Then just after the middle of the month a big pulse arrives, but it’s too chunky for the learners. The real action comes in the third week with a solid, clean E groundswell that’ll have the experienced crew grinning.
The first couple of days – Sunday 12th through to Thursday 17th – are flat or tiny. The biggest bit of energy is a 2.3ft ESE swell on Sunday morning, but with a cross‑off wind and only 116 combined energy (moderate) it’s still pretty ordinary. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th go glassy, but the swell is barely 1ft, so it’s a flat spell.
Then on Saturday 18th we get a little pulse: 2.3ft ESE swell, 14‑second period, clean and cross‑off winds. Combined energy 288 – moderate. That’s a small but clean window for a longboard or a foiler. The next day, Sunday 19th, things change fast. A 10ft NNE swell shows up in the morning, offshore wind, but it’s 19 mph – fresh – and the energy is 3321 (strong). That’s too big for beginners, and the afternoon sees 15ft E swell – even bigger. The break is beginner‑friendly, so this is only for experts. Monday 20th is still big: 13ft E swell, clean cross‑off wind, 4071 energy – excellent for experienced surfers, but no‑go for the average punter.
After a bit of a lull on Wednesday 22nd (4ft, onshore, poor), the groundswell settles into a solid, consistent E pulse from Thursday 23rd through to Sunday 27th. Swell heights sit between 6.5ft and 8ft
