Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk the same story, but in feet, for the imperial crew.
Lookin’ at the charts, there’s a whole lot of nothin’ for the near future. For over a week, the surf is just flat-out poor. Waves are tiny, barely a foot or two at best, with weak energy and messy wind. The water temp at Tauranga Bay is around 62°F, which is normal for the season. We get a few glassy mornings, like Wednesday, July 15th and Thursday, July 16th, but with swell under a foot, it’s a lake, not a surf. Don’t bother paddling out.
Things finally start to stir late on Friday, July 17th. The morning has a long period groundswell (17 seconds) offering some energy (220), but the wave height is still only about 2ft. The wind is glassy, so it’ll be clean, but it’s still a very ordinary, small wave.
The big news is a serious pulse of energy comin’ in on Tuesday, July 21st. The afternoon session there is a monster. We’re talkin’ 15ft of east swell, with energy readings of 4865 — that’s powerful, heavy water. This is not for beginners. If you’re an experienced surfer, this is your session. The wind is cross-offshore, keepin’ the face clean, but the size (well over 8ft) means only the experts should even think about it.
Right behind it, Wednesday, July 22nd, is still a big day for the pros. The afternoon has 10ft from the ENE with a solid 11-second period and a strong offshore wind blowin’ clean. Energy is still pumping at 2144. Conditions will be excellent, but again, this is big, powerful surf.
That big stuff tapers off through the end of the week into the weekend of the 25th and 26th. Saturday, July 25th morning should be a nice, manageable size of around 4ft with light offshore wind and clean conditions. Sunday, July 26th morning looks even cleaner, glassy, with a similar 4ft groundswell. That’s the window for the average surfer to get back in the water.
So to wrap it up: the next week is a write-off. The one to wait for is Tuesday afternoon, July 21st, and Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd — but that’s strictly for the big-dog crew. The weekend after that, the 25th and 26th, will give you clean, fun waves for the rest of us.
Rusty.
