The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Tauranga Bay.
To be straight with you, this 16-day window is pretty flat. There’s a real gap here. After the first few days of small, rideable waves, the surf just drops away and we’re looking at a long stretch of nothing special from around Monday the 21st right through to the end of the month. It’s a tough run.
The best of what’s on offer is right at the start. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th. We’ve got a tiny little groundswell pushing in from the ESE with a long period, 15 to 17 seconds. That long period means the wave shape should be better than the size suggests, with nice lines and longer waits between sets. Swell heights are only around 2ft, but combined energy is moderate (224), so there’s a bit of push in the water. The water temp is sitting at 62°, about normal for this time of year.
Friday morning is the pick. Clear skies, a light WSW wind blowing cross-offshore, keeping the surface clean. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and with the swell this small, it’s perfect for a longboard or a funboard. The water will be glassy. The wind gets a bit messy in the afternoon, turning cross-on, but still light.
Saturday morning is also worth a look. The wind is a light SSW, again cross-off, and the surf stays clean. Same small swell, still around 2ft. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s surfable and clean. After that, the size drops off a cliff.
By Sunday the 19th, the swell is fading fast, down to 2ft and then 1ft, and the energy is weak (122 dropping to 77). It’s the last day you’d bother paddling out. From Monday the 20th onwards, it’s basically flat. There are a few days with clean conditions and even some glassy mornings, but the swell is too small to do anything with. The wind gets strong later in the week, and there’s a messy cross-shore chop, but there’s no swell to ride anyway.
So, the call is simple. If you’re desperate for a paddle, hit Friday or Saturday morning this week. After that, save your wax. It’s a quiet spell for Tauranga Bay.
Rusty.
