The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here.

Alright, look, I’ve got to be straight with you. The next week and a half is looking pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a run of tiny, weak surf and a lot of junky wind. You’re going to be staring at a blank period for several days, so maybe give the board a wax and just watch the horizon.

The first real highlight on the calendar, if you can call it that, is the morning of Monday the 31st of August. It’s not going to be big, but we finally get some clean conditions. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the NE with a 10-second period. The energy is moderate (222), and with a light offshore SSE wind, the place should be glassy. It’s surfable, but honestly, it’s just ordinary. The afternoon gets messy again with a cross-onshore.

After that, we slip back into another flat spell. The morning of the 1st of September has a tiny bit of surf, 3ft from the NE, but nothing to get excited about. We’re back to waiting.

Now, the one you might want to circle. The afternoon of Friday the 4th of September shows a bit of life. It’s a small 4ft from the NW with a short, 5-second period, but the wind is light and slightly offshore. The energy is moderate (100). It’s still only a one-star day, but it’s the best we’ve got going. The swell direction isn’t ideal for Tauranga Bay, which prefers a NE, but a clean, glassy wave is a clean wave.

After that, we go back to small, onshore junk. The morning of the 6th of September is glassy with a 1ft NE groundswell with a 12-second period, but there’s just not enough push. The long period means it might be a bit too straight at the beach break, anyway.

So, there it is. A lot of waiting, a couple of windows for a grovel. If you’re a beginner, the 31st of August morning with that 4ft is small and safe. For the rest of us, it’s a skimboard session until that Friday afternoon. Keep the faith, this place doesn't tend to stay this flat for too long, and the long-range stuff looks like it could change.

Rusty, signing off.
