The Lowdown

Alright mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for this stretch.

Well, I gotta be straight with ya – it’s gonna be a long, flat wait before anything worth paddlin’ out for shows up at Silencios. This spot is a reef break, pretty exposed to the swell, and it likes it from the SW, but for the first week and a half, we’re starvin’. It’s a rare one that needs the right push, and there just isn’t any meaningful energy on the table.

The water temp is sitting at a toasty 69°F which is a solid 7°F warmer than usual – that’s very unusual for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.

From Saturday the 22nd of August right through till Wednesday the 27th, it’s all tiny, weak dribble. Swell heights are stuck at 1ft to 2ft, with short to moderate periods, and the combined energy is weak to moderate (141 to 478). The wind is mostly light to gentle, but it’s cross-on or onshore, so it’s messy or just plain flat. Not worth a second look.

We finally get a pulse on Friday the 28th of August. The swell bumps up to 6ft – 7ft from the SW, with a 16-second period. That’s a proper long-period groundswell, which means good shape for a reef, but it also means long lulls between sets. The combined energy jumps to strong (1945 and 2152). The wind is light and onshore (on), so it’s clean. The catch? The forecast notes “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” The size is pushing into the expert-only zone at 7ft, but this is the best it gets in the whole window. This is the standout day.

Saturday the 29th holds onto some size at 6ft – 6ft, but the wind swings cross-on by the afternoon, making it choppy. Sunday the 30th still has 5ft in the morning with light onshore wind, but the period drops and the energy fades to moderate (732). The afternoon gets blown out by a 12 mph cross-on breeze.

After that, the surf fades again. From Monday the 31st through Wednesday the 3rd of September, it’s back to small, weak surf (2ft – 3ft) and poor conditions.

Then, a second promising window shows up Thursday the 3rd of September. The swell comes back strong at 5ft – 6ft from the SW, with a long 18-second period. Energy is very strong (1556 to 1932). The wind stays light and onshore (on) for the morning and afternoon – that’s clean. This is another solid option, but keep in mind it’s a long-period swell, so sets will be spaced out.

Friday the 4th of September still has 6ft – 6ft, but the wind gets a bit stronger (9 mph) and is cross-on for the morning, then onshore. It’s still worth a paddle, but not as clean as Thursday.

By Saturday the 5th, the swell drops to 5ft – 5ft with cross-on winds, and the energy is back to moderate (1048 and 813). Then Sunday the 6th of September fizzles out to 4ft – 4ft.

The standout call here is Friday the 28th of August. That’s the biggest, cleanest swell of the whole run. It’s a reef break, so that long-period SW groundswell will wrap in nicely, and with light onshore wind, it should be glassy. Just watch the tide. The second-best is Thursday the 3rd of September – same story with a long-period groundswell and clean light wind. Crowds at Silencios are only “sometimes,” so you might get it to yourself if you’re keen.

Rusty.
