The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
It's a tough stretch ahead, I'm not gonna lie. We're looking at a long run of days where the conditions just aren't cooperating. The swell is around, but the wind and tide windows are out of whack, leaving us with mostly marginal or poor surf. The standout period, and really the only window worth getting excited about, is right at the very end of the forecast.
Silencios is our only spot on the radar. It's an inconsistent reef break, so it's a bit of a gamble at the best of times. The first real shot at something rideable is on Saturday, July 19th, with a 4.9ft SW groundswell (13-second period). The morning looks clean with a light onshore wind, but the wave state is a bit of a mystery. The afternoon bumps up to 4.9ft, but the wind goes cross-on and the conditions are rated poor. The combined energy is moderate (775). It's not prime time, but it's a start.
From there, we slide into a grim stretch. From Sunday, July 20th, right through to the end of the month, it's a real grind. Most mornings have a bit of swell, but the wind is either cross-on or the wave state is unknown or just poor. The afternoons are consistently written off. The crowds at Silencios are a factor sometimes, so you might have it to yourself, but that's because it's not really breaking.
The surf picks up again around Monday, July 28th and Tuesday, July 29th. This is the window you want to be watching. The swell builds to a solid 6.2ft on Tuesday morning from the SW, with a 15-second period. That's a proper long-period groundswell with very strong energy (1704). The wind is light and onshore, which is a big plus for a reef break. This is our best bet. The following morning, Wednesday, July 29th, still has a decent 5.6ft SW swell under light offshore winds. These are the standouts. Keep in mind, this is a reef break, so those long-period swells can really focus the energy. For the more experienced surfers, the Tuesday morning peak could be a real treat, but it's a long way out, so don't book the trip just yet.
After that peak, the swell fades quickly through the first few days of August, with the wind turning cross-on again, leaving us back in the poor-to-marginal zone.
Water temps at Silencios are a notable 70°, which is 7.7° warmer than normal for this time of year. That's very unusual, so you can leave the full steamer at home.
So, to sum it up: a long, flat period with a big, late reward. Keep your eyes on Tuesday, July 28th morning and Wednesday, July 29th morning for the best swells of the outlook.
