The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow-burner. We’ve got a solid run of small, clean conditions early on, but the surf quality just isn’t there for the first week. Most of the time it’s labelled as poor or marginal, so don’t get your hopes up too high. There’s a bit of a gap there where you’ll be left waiting for something worthwhile. Things do start to look a bit more promising heading into the second week, but it’s still a bit of a mixed bag.
The standout session, if you can wait for it, looks like Tuesday afternoon, August 11th at Silencios. It’s a reef break, so it handles the swell well. We’re looking at a 6 ft swell from the SSW, with a moderate energy reading (1,399). The period is a solid 14 seconds, so there’s some proper groundswell to work with. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore at 9 mph, which is a bit of a bummer, but it’s not a total write-off. This is an inconsistent spot, and it's only for the intermediate crew, so don't expect a crowded lineup if you're out there. The bigger size (6 ft) might be pushing it for beginners, but it’s good fun for the rest of us.
The other one to keep an eye on is Monday afternoon, August 10th. Silencios will have a 4 ft SSW swell, but with a very long 17-second period and a strong energy reading of 1,291. The wind is light and offshore at 6 mph, so it’ll be glassy. That long period means it’ll be a bit more powerful and the sets will be a bit more spaced out, which is a treat for paddling out. The issue is it’s still only a marginal score, so don't expect perfection, but it's the best of the first week.
For the rest of the time, the swell is small, mostly between 2 ft and 4 ft, and the wind is often light and onshore or cross-onshore. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about. The combined energy is mostly weak to moderate (between 200 and 900), so there’s not a lot of punch. It’s a bit of a waiting game, but that Tuesday afternoon looks like your best bet.
Rusty.
