The Lowdown

Right, I’ve had a good look at the charts for Silencios, and honestly, it’s a bit of a tough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a 16-day window that starts with a bang in terms of swell size, but the wind just won’t play ball for most of it. We’ll get a couple of fleeting windows where it cleans up, but you’ll have to pick your moment.

The biggest issue is that persistent cross-onshore wind from the south. For the first week, from Sunday the 16th right through to the end of the following week, that’s the story. It’s blowing 6 to 9 mph, which is enough to put a chop on everything and keep the scores low. The water temp though, is a real standout – it’s sitting at 70°, which is a whopping 8° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so you’ll be in boardshorts or a spring suit at most.

Now, for the surf itself. The first real sniff of something decent comes on Tuesday morning the 18th. We’ve got a SW groundswell pushing 7ft at 13 seconds, with moderate to strong energy (1346). But, it’s still cross-onshore. That afternoon, it actually jumps to 8ft at 12 seconds (1577) – a really solid pulse – but again, that cross-onshore wind messes it up. It’s a shame, because that’s a lot of ocean energy.

The best chance for clean surf comes from Wednesday morning the 19th through to Thursday afternoon the 20th. The wind finally swings offshore from the SSW and SW, light at 6 mph. That’s the key. The swell drops a bit to 6ft to 6ft with a shorter period of 9 to 10 seconds, but offshore wind is gold. It won’t be a classic long-period groundswell, but it’ll be clean and rideable. If you’ve got a window, that’s your best couple of days, especially the Wednesday morning with that 6ft SW windswell and light offshore wind.

After that, things fall off a cliff. From Friday the 21st all the way through to Sunday the 30th, we’re looking at tiny waves – mostly below 2ft. There’s a couple of days with very long period swell (18 seconds) on the 22nd and 27th, but when it’s that small and that long, it tends to just be a lazy bump on a point break like Silencios. It breaks inconsistently here anyway, so you’re really rolling the dice.

There’s a slight pulse of energy coming back around Monday the 31st, with 4ft SW swell at 12 seconds and light offshore wind in the morning. The energy is building back up (772), so it’s a glimmer of hope right at the very end of the period. But that’s too far out to get excited about yet.

So, to sum it up: Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are your standouts. Go then, when the wind is offshore and the swell is solid enough. The rest is a mix of wind-affected choppy days and flat spells. It’s not a classic run, but that mid-week window in the first week is worth getting wet for.
