The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf ahead for Shipwrecks on Nusa Lembongan. This is a sheltered reef setup that loves a good SW groundswell, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing. The water is sitting at 81.9°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – not a huge deal, just a bit of a bonus.
The action kicks off Saturday afternoon, July 18th, with a clean 3.6 ft SW swell pushing in. The wind is offshore from the SE at 15.5 mph, keeping things glassy. The combined energy is moderate (700), so you'll feel the push, but it’s not a freight train. This is a nice, gentle start to the run.
Sunday, July 19th, holds steady with similar 3.6 ft to 3.9 ft SW swell, still with that clean offshore wind. The energy is moderate (675-688). Good, consistent fun.
Monday, July 20th, is where it starts to get interesting. The swell jumps to 5.6 ft to 5.9 ft from the SSW, with a very long period of 17 seconds. This is a proper groundswell. The combined energy is strong (1985-1830). The wind is still offshore at 15.5 mph. This is a standout day for experienced surfers, as the size and power will be a handful for beginners. The long period means it’ll be a bit more walled-up at this reef, but the shape will be incredible.
Tuesday, July 21st, keeps the quality high with 4.6 ft to 4.9 ft SSW swell, still a solid 14-second period. The wind picks up to 18.6 mph, but it’s still offshore, so it’s clean but with a bit of a fresh bite. Energy is moderate (1038-906). Avoid the morning rain showers, but the afternoon is clean.
The swell eases from Wednesday, July 22nd, through to Friday, July 24th, with heights dropping to 2.3 ft to 3.6 ft. The wind stays offshore or cross-offshore, keeping it clean. The energy drops off (588-542), but there are still fun, smaller waves to be had.
Then we hit a little gap. The end of July into early August sees a bit of a lull in quality, but nothing too drastic.
Saturday, July 25th, is back with a 3.9 ft SW swell, 15-second period, and a gentle offshore wind from the ESE at 12.4 mph. The energy is moderate (853). Clean, lined-up waves.
Now, Sunday, July 26th, is another big standout. We get a 7.2 ft swell from the SE, but the period drops to just 8 seconds. This is a windswell, not a groundswell. The energy is strong (1359), but the short period means it will be a bit crumbly and less powerful. The wind is light offshore at 9.3 mph, so it’ll be clean. This one is more for the bigger-wave crew, as it’s pushing past the 5 ft mark for beginners.
Monday, July 27th, is a bit of a letdown – 4.6 ft to 4.9 ft SE swell with a 7-8 second period. Light offshore wind, but the wave quality is ordinary. The energy is moderate (395-796).
Tuesday, July 28th, is a gem. A 4.6 ft SSW swell rolls in with a very long 18-second period. The wind is fresh offshore at 18.6 mph. The combined energy is very strong (2494). This is a true groundswell event. The shape will be epic, but the long period will make it a bit more walled-up at the reef. For experienced surfers, this is a top-tier call.
The run continues into the first week of August. Wednesday, July 29th, holds 4.9 ft SSW swell with a 15-second period, and Thursday, July 30th, eases to 3.6 ft with a 14-second period. Both with good offshore wind.
Then we get to the real heater. From Friday, July 31st, through Sunday, August 2nd, we see a sustained pulse of SW groundswell. Friday morning has 3.6 ft SW with an 18-second period, but the afternoon jumps to 4.9 ft and a 19-second period. Saturday, August 1st, delivers 6.9 ft SW swell with an 18-second period, and the combined energy is massive (3039-2958). The wind is fresh offshore at 18.6 mph. This is excellent, powerful surf for experienced surfers only. The size is over 8.2 ft, so it’s strictly for experts. The crowd factor at Shipwrecks can be a thing, especially on a Saturday, so be prepared for company.
Sunday, August 2nd, keep the good run with 5.9 ft to 6.2 ft SW swell, 16-17 second period, but the wind is up to 21.7 mph. Still offshore, but it’s a strong breeze. The energy is very strong (2452-2178).
Best on offer: I’d be calling out Tuesday, July 28th, and
