The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s get into it.
We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up at Shipwrecks on Nusa Lembongan. This is a consistent, advanced reef break that’s sheltered from the swell, so it needs a good angle to fire. The good news is, the angle is on.
We kick off Wednesday afternoon, July 15, with a clean 6ft SSW groundswell rolling in at a long 16 seconds. The water’s a warm 82°, which is about average for this time of year. That’s a big, powerful wave with a combined energy of 1444 – that’s strong, and it’s got some serious punch. A moderate offshore breeze from the SE is keeping the faces clean, and the sets will have some real length between them. This is the standout of the whole run. For experienced surfers, this is the time to get out there. Crowds are possible, but it’s a reef, so pick your line.
Thursday and Friday keep the quality high with 4ft to 5ft SSW groundswell, still with that lovely 15-second period, and clean offshore winds. The energy drops a bit into the 900-1000 range, but it’s still very good surf. Saturday morning gets a bit of a fresh breeze at 19 mph, but it’s still offshore and clean; the swell drops to 4ft. Sunday holds a similar size, but the wind is fresh and the period shortens to 13 seconds – still fun, but the shine is off.
Then we hit Monday, July 20, and it’s a stormy-looking day with rain showers, but the swell jumps back up to 6ft from the SSW with a 17-second period. The combined energy rockets to 2086 – that’s very strong. This is another serious session, but the wind is a moderate to fresh breeze, so it won’t be as glassy as that first day. Still, the power is there for the experienced crew.
The rest of that week and into the next, from the 21st to the 26th, we see a slow fade. Swell drops from 5ft down to 3ft, periods hang around 13-14 seconds, and the wind stays offshore but picks up at times. It’s still good, clean surf, but nothing to write home about. The energy is mostly in the 500-900 range, so moderate.
Towards the end of the run, on Monday July 27 and Tuesday July 28, a new, shorter-period swell from the SE moves in at 5ft to 6ft, but with a period of only 7 seconds. That’s a short, weak windswell. The energy is low (541-756), and the waves will be choppier and less organized. The longer-period groundswell returns on the 28th and 29th, but it’s smaller, around 3ft, and the wind is a fresh 19 mph. The conditions are marginal, and the last few days of July look like a washout with strong winds and questionable tides.
For the absolute best, you’re looking at Wednesday afternoon July 15 and Monday morning July 20. The 15th is the cleanest, the 20th is the biggest. Don’t sleep on the 15th.
Rusty.
