The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of surf lining up, mostly from the south-west. The real standout is a reef break that handles the angle beautifully, and we’re looking at a good stretch of offshore winds to keep things clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild there.
The action kicks off on Saturday the 18th with a clean 4ft SW groundswell (15 seconds) and a solid 19 mph offshore wind from the SE. The combined energy is moderate (783), and it’s going to be a rippable morning at Shipwrecks (Nusa Lembongan). That long period will make for some nice lines, but remember, with a period over 15 seconds, it’s a groundswell that can sometimes be a bit too straight for beach breaks – this reef setup is perfect for it. The wind stays offshore through Sunday and into Monday morning.
Now, Monday the 20th is where we start to get excited. The swell jumps to 6ft from the SSW with a 17-second period, and the combined energy is strong (1988). Monday morning looks fantastic with a moderate offshore wind. The waves are getting real, and this is a session for the experienced crew. Monday afternoon the wind swings cross-off, so it’s not as perfect, but still clean.
Tuesday the 21st holds a bit of leftover energy, but the wind is cross-off so the quality drops a notch. Wednesday the 22nd is back to clean offshore winds and a 4ft south-west swell. It’s a good, solid run of waves.
Thursday the 23rd has a small morning, but the afternoon picks up with a clean 3ft swell and offshore wind. That’s a fun little session. Friday the 24th is similar – small but clean, a nice way to finish the week.
The next real standout is brewing for the weekend of the 26th. Sunday the 26th morning sees a 7ft swell from the SE, but with a short period of only 8 seconds. That’s a windswell, and with a strong 22 mph offshore wind, it’s going to be a bit of a bumpy, gutless mess. This one is more for the kite surfers than paddle surfers, the energy is moderate (818) but the quality is poor.
Forget that. The real magic for the second week is Monday the 27th. The swell drops to 3ft, but the period is 21 seconds! That is a very long period groundswell, and the energy is strong (1646). With a 16 mph offshore wind, this is a glassy, clean, and very special morning. The waves will be lined up, plenty of power behind them, and paddling out will be easy. Tuesday the 28th holds similar energy with a 4ft, 18-second swell and offshore wind in the morning. This is a serious run of quality.
We roll into the end of the month with more of the same. Wednesday the 29th is a beauty with a 5ft, 16-second groundswell and a gentle 9 mph offshore breeze. Could be a magic morning.
Then, the biggest highlight of the entire forecast lands on the 31st of July. Friday the 31st morning is packing 6ft of SSW swell with a 17-second period, and the combined energy is a very strong 2154. The wind is a moderate offshore. This is the best session on offer: excellent surf for experienced surfers. The afternoon is just as good with 6ft and offshore wind. That’s a day to call in sick.
The run continues into the 1st of August with plenty of size, and then Sunday the 2nd of August delivers the biggest swell of the period with 6ft from the SSW, an 18-second period, and a combined energy of 2344. Offshore wind. That one is a monster for the advanced crew.
All in all, we’ve got two standout windows: the first around Monday the 20th, and the absolute best being the run from the 27th of July through to the 2nd of August.
Rusty.
