The Lowdown

Hey, Rusty here. Let’s call it straight: the next sixteen days are a desert for surf. No standout sessions, no hidden gems. Just a whole lot of flat.

We’re talking a long stretch of tiny, weak swell. The energy never gets going, and most of what shows up is from the west with periods that make it feel like a dead lake. The combined energy sits between 6 and 12, so it’s all in the weak bucket.

From Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th, it’s a wash. A whisper of 0.1m west swell with a 17-second period – groundswell yes, but it’s so small you couldn’t ride a teacup. Winds are cross-off or cross, so the surface is clean, but there’s nothing to catch. Monday the 14th through Wednesday the 18th, we get some clean mornings with gentle offshore ESE winds, still only 0.1m of west swell. That’s ankle-deep dribble. Same story, different day.

A quiet patch hits around Sunday the 20th and Monday the 21st with even less energy. Into the second week, Wednesday the 23rd afternoon shows a 0.6m swell from the NE, but the period is a shocking 3 seconds – that’s pure wind chop, messy and short. Wind is cross-on, so it’ll be choppy and blown-out. Thursday the 24th and Friday the 25th are similar scraps of 0.2m to 0.3m from the NE and NNE, still with those terrible short periods. By the last weekend, Saturday the 26th and Sunday the 27th, the combined energy is zero to 1, with a faint 0.2m west swell on Sunday morning and a light breeze.

The only spot in the game is Rapid Creek - Beach. It’s a beach break, fairly exposed to WNW swell, rated for intermediates. It’s fairly consistent, but that means nothing when there’s no swell. The wind goes offshore from the ESE some mornings, which keeps the water glassy, but with no waves, what’s the point? Crowds are rare, so if you’re just after a float, you’ll have it to yourself.

Honestly, this setup looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing – those constant cross-off breezes are all we’ve got. For us wave riders, this is a normal blank run for the area. Forecasts can change, so don’t write it off completely.

Rusty.
