The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s cut to the chase. We’ve got a long stretch ahead, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. For the next week and a half, it’s a flat spell. No wave energy at all (0 energy). The wind is clean offshore in the mornings from the ESE, but without any swell to push, it’s just a pretty view. The afternoons turn cross-shore or light onshore, but that doesn’t matter because there’s nothing to ride. A solid 10-day gap, with no surf on offer.

Then, on the 5th of August, the ocean starts to remember what it’s supposed to do. A tiny, tiny pulse shows up in the afternoon – a 0.3ft, 18-second long-period groundswell from the west. The combined energy is still super weak (6). That’s not enough to get excited about, but it’s a sign that something is shifting.

The real glimmer in the whole 16-day window hits on Friday, 7th August. It’s still not world-class, but it’s what we’ve got. The morning shows a tiny 1ft, 3-second swell from the northeast, with clean conditions and a light ESE cross-offshore breeze. The energy is a measly (1). By the afternoon, it bumps up to 1ft, still 3 seconds, from the NE, but the wind turns cross-onshore and choppy (energy 3). The break is Rapid Creek - Beach, and it’s a fairly consistent beach break that’s fairly exposed to WNW swell, so this little NE windswell is a bit of an odd angle, but it’s the only game in town. The water temp is about average for the time of year. This is a spot for intermediate surfers who are keen to get wet, but don’t expect any punch. The crowds are rare, so you’ll have it to yourself.

The rest of the run through to the 9th of August is back to zero or near-zero surf. The 9th shows a whisper of a 0.3ft, 18-second west swell again (energy 7) in the morning, but that’s a tease.

So, the standout? It’s that 7th of August. If you’ve got cabin fever, it’s your best bet. It’s nothing to drive across the country for, but it’s a chance to get the board wet. The long-range stuff in the second week is just too weak and uncertain to call. Hang in there, the ocean might come good eventually.

Rusty.
