The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days at Rapid Creek – Beach are a real drought. There’s nothing on the table that’s worth paddling out for. The water temp is sitting at 80°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there, but that’s about the only thing going for it.
From Wednesday 15 July right through to Thursday 30 July, the forecast is a flat spell. The combined swell energy is zero for most of the period, and even when a tiny pulse of 0.3 ft from the west shows up on Friday 17 July afternoon, it’s got a long period of 15 seconds, but the energy is a measly 4 (weak). It’s not enough to break properly, and with a cross-shore breeze, it’s just a tease. The biggest reading comes on Wednesday 22 July afternoon with a 1 ft from the northeast, but that’s a tiny 2-second period – basically wind chop – and the energy is just 1 (weak). The wind is cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and messy.
The offshore winds that pop up, especially on the mornings, are clean, but with no swell to work with, it’s like having a perfectly waxed board and no waves. The setup is a beach, so when there’s no groundswell, it’s a flat, sandy expanse. This isn’t unusual for the area – a blank run like this is just part of the deal here. If you’re looking for a paddle, you’re out of luck. The only thing that might move is a kite, because the fresh offshore breezes and flat water could be fun for that, but for surfing? Save your energy.
Keep an eye on the charts, things can change, but right now, it’s a solid no-go.
Rusty.
