The Lowdown

G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's be real, the outlook for Rapid Creek Beach is a tough one. We're staring down a long, flat spell with barely a ripple to get excited about for the entire 16-day run. This isn't unusual for the area, but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

For the first ten days, from Saturday, September 5th right through to Tuesday, September 15th, we're talking about surf that's barely a whisper. The swell hovers around a pathetic 0.3 ft to 1 ft. The energy is a joke, hitting a measly 4 (combined energy of all swells directed here) most days. There's a bit of a tease on Monday, September 14th, with the morning turning glassy and the energy bumping up to 25 (combined energy of all swells directed here), but the swell is still only 0.7 ft. It's a flat, clean, glassy lake, but it’s not surf. That's the best we've got, and it's heartbreaking.

The wind is variable, but mostly onshore or cross-onshore, adding a bit of chop to the nothingness. A few mornings offer a light cross-off or glassy conditions, but there's no swell to clean up. It's a real doldrum period.

Come Wednesday, September 16th, through to the end of the run on Sunday, September 20th, hope is a faint, flickering candle. The swell remains stuck at 0.3 ft for most of it, with the energy staying in the low double-digits at best, reaching 25 (combined energy of all swells directed here) on the 14th. The only real standout is the morning of Thursday, September 17th, with a glassy, dead calm sea and a swell of 0.3 ft from the west. It's going to be a sheet of glass. There's a late-breaking change on the afternoon of Friday, September 18th, with a new 2 ft swell from the northeast, but the energy is still low at 11 (combined energy of all swells directed here) and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore. It's a slight tickle, but that's about it.

The water temperature is sitting at 82°F at the start of the forecast, which is a little warmer than average for this time of year. It's a small comfort.

Look, I'm not going to sugarcoat it. There are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The best advice I can give is to wax up your longboard for a glide, or just take a break. The forecasts can change, but right now, it's a flat, blank run. Rapid Creek Beach is a fairly exposed spot, but it needs a swell to work with. This stretch of weather is a total write-off for paddle surfing.

Rusty.
