The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Rapid Creek – Beach (Rapid-Creek-Beach) and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a dud run for the next 16 days. There’s barely a ripple to get excited about, and I mean that. The whole window from now through to August 30th is a write-off for decent surf. Let’s break it down.
From Saturday the 15th right through to Tuesday the 27th, the swell is flat or barely a whisper – we’re talking 0.3ft or nothing at all, with combined energy levels sitting in the single digits, like 4 or 5 (weak energy). The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. Winds are mostly cross-off in the mornings, like ESE at 9 mph, which keeps it clean, but with no swell, it’s just a flat lake. Afternoons get a bit messy with NNE cross-shore or cross-on breezes, but it doesn’t matter because there’s nothing to ride.
The very last few days, from the 28th to the 30th, tease a bit of a pulse – a tiny 1ft swell from the NE on the 27th and 28th, but with a period of just 3 seconds (short period, sloppy), and the combined energy is still pitiful at 3. Then on the 29th and 30th, it’s back to 0.3ft from the W with periods of 20-22 seconds, but the energy is still only 10-12 (weak). The wind on the 30th morning is cross-off from the E at 9 mph, so it’s clean, but the swell is too small to do anything with.
Honestly, there’s nothing here that’s worth paddling out for. The break is a beach setup, fairly consistent when there’s swell, but we’ve got a long stretch of nothing. For kite surfers, the moderate winds and flat water might be interesting, but for a surfer, it’s a no-go. The lack of consistency is normal for this area when the swell’s just not showing up, but it’s a tough run. Let’s hope the forecasts change, because right now, it’s a blank.
Rusty.
