The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – if you’re hanging out for a proper surf over the next couple of weeks at Rapid Creek - Beach, you’re going to be waiting a long time. The whole 16-day window is a total flat spell, with barely a ripple to get excited about. There’s no standout, no hidden gem, just a whole lot of nothing. The first couple of days are especially grim, and the pattern never really breaks.

Tuesday morning the 8th kicks off with a tiny 0.7ft W swell at a short 4 seconds, with a cross breeze from the NE at 6 mph. It’s poor, combined energy is just 1 (weak) – not even worth paddling out for. That afternoon doesn’t get any better with 1.0ft onshore slop. Wednesday morning the 9th sees a glassy start with N wind at 3 mph, but the swell is still only 1.0ft and the energy is a measly 6 (weak). It might look pretty, but there’s nothing to ride. Thursday morning the 10th offers a clean little 1.0ft W swell with a light cross-offshore E breeze at 9 mph, but again, the energy is only 5 (weak). It’s a tease.

From Friday the 11th right through to Wednesday the 23rd, it’s the same story – swell heights drop to 0.3ft or even flat, with periods all over the place but mostly short to moderate. Combined energy stays in single digits or low double digits, maxing out at 12 on Sunday the 13th afternoon (still weak). Winds are mostly cross-offshore in the mornings which keeps it clean, but with no swell, clean conditions don’t matter. Afternoons tend to get a cross-onshore chop, but again, there’s nothing to surf anyway.

Water temp on Tuesday morning the 8th sits at 82°, about normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a spring suit – but you will need patience.

Honestly, this is a tough run. There’s nothing here for beginners, intermediates, or experts. The only thing this stretch is good for is a long walk on the beach. If the wind picks up enough on the afternoons with that cross-onshore breeze, kite surfers might find a bit of fun, but for paddle surfing? Forget it. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a blank run.
