The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next 16 days are a total write-off for a wave. That’s a long stretch with nothing to offer, and for this area, a blank run like this is more normal than you’d hope. The swell just isn’t there, and what little shows up is tiny and weak.

Rapid Creek - Beach is the only break on the cards, and it’s a frustrating watch. The water temp is sitting at 81°F, which is about average for this time of year – nothing to get excited about there.

From Sunday the 30th of August right through to Monday the 14th of September, it’s the same story. Swell heights are a pathetic 0.3ft to 2ft, with periods that are all over the shop – some long-period groundswell readings like 16 seconds and even 21 seconds, but with absolutely no height behind them. The combined energy is pitiful, barely scratching 18 on the best day, and often just 2 or 3. Winds are generally light to moderate, with a few mornings offering clean conditions thanks to an offshore or cross-off breeze, like Monday the 31st of August morning with ESE 16 mph offshore, or Saturday the 5th of September morning with glassy ENE 3 mph. But it doesn’t matter one bit – you can’t surf air.

The only slight tease comes on Monday the 7th of September afternoon, with a 2ft swell from the WNW and a 3-second period, and Tuesday the 8th of September morning with 2ft from the WSW and a 4-second period. But these are short-period, weak wind swells, and the winds are either cross-on or cross-shore, leaving it choppy and ugly. The combined energy is 6 and 15 respectively – still hopeless. The break is fairly exposed to swell, but there’s just nothing to expose.

I wouldn’t even bother paddling out. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those rare afternoons when the onshore picks up – but for a surfer, it’s a solid two weeks of watching the horizon do nothing. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s no light at the end of the tunnel.

Rusty.
