For the whole stretch, the wind is blowing cross-onshore from the east or east-northeast, which keeps things choppy and messy. The swell is on the small to modest side, and the period is short, so we’re looking at weak, wind-affected waves rather than proper groundswell. There’s no standout period of clean, glassy conditions. The overall pattern is a long, drawn-out run of marginal surf where you’ll be scratching for a decent wave. The water temp is sitting at about 80°F – that’s pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The only break in the mix here is Point Pelua. It’s a point break that’s inconsistent and only occasionally breaks, so you can’t bank on it firing. The swell direction coming from the east-northeast is not the optimum for this spot, which prefers north-northeast. The wind stays cross-onshore across the entire forecast, so forget about any glassy windows. Even at the start, on Thursday morning August 6th, we’ve got 12 mph cross-onshore wind and a 4 ft east-northeast swell with a short 6-second period. The combined wave energy is weak at 99 – barely enough to push a surfable face. Surf conditions are poor and the score is zero. That sets the tone.

We move through Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – it’s the same story. Swell height hovers between 3 ft and 5 ft, period never gets past 7 seconds, wave energy is low to moderate (best is 186 on Friday morning), and cross-onshore wind from the east or east-northeast keeps the surface choppy. The afternoon of Sunday August 9th has a risk of thunderstorms and only 6 mph wind, but it’s still cross-onshore and the wave energy is only 103. Not exactly a call to arms.

The second week – from August 11th through to Friday August 21st – doesn’t offer any reprieve. Swell remains small, 3 ft to 6 ft, period occasionally nudges up to 8 seconds but that’s still short-period junk. Wave energy climbs to 509 on the morning of August 16th, which is moderate, but the wind is still cross-onshore at 12 mph, so the quality is trashed. The water temp anomaly remains unremarkable. This is just a long, flat feeling stretch where the surf stays poor. There is no moment in the 16 days where conditions align for a good paddle. With the consistent cross-onshore wind and short-period swell, this spot is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing – if you’re looking for a pull rather than a paddle, you might get something out of it.

So, to sum it up: there are zero standouts here. The entire 16-day window is a run of poor surf. If you’re desperate, maybe dawn patrols on the lighter wind afternoons like Sunday August 9th or Wednesday August 12th could offer a sloppy waist-high wave with a light breeze, but expectations should be low. This isn’t a blank run that’s unusual – for an inconsistent spot like Point Pelua, this kind of stretched-out flat spell is pretty normal. Forecasts can change, but right now I’d say keep the board in the car and check something else.
