The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break it down. I’m looking at the next 16 days at Playa El Cocal, and I gotta tell ya, it’s a total washout. There’s absolutely no good surf options in this whole window. Every single forecast shows poor surf conditions, with a zero rating. It’s a bummer.

The problem is the wind. It’s blowing from the east and east-northeast, which is a cross-onshore for this break. That means constant chop and lumpy water. We start with a tiny swell, about 3 feet, but it’s a weak, short-period windswell of just 5 to 6 seconds. No real push or shape. The combined energy is weak, way under 100.

As we get into the second week, the swell does build. From the 13th of August, we see waves of 5 to 6 feet, and by the 15th and 16th, we’re looking at 7 feet. The period improves a bit to 8 seconds, and the energy jumps into the moderate range (200 to 539). But the wind just won’t let up. It’s still cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy. For a beach break like this, with that kind of swell and strong onshore wind, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one. The water temp is 84°, which is about normal for this time of year.

The only break here is Playa El Cocal, and it’s an inconsistent spot. It rarely breaks clean, and even with the bigger swell, the conditions are just wrong. The ideal swell direction is from the SSE, but we’re stuck with east and southeast swells, so it’s not a good match. Crowds are possible sometimes, but with surf this poor, it won’t be a problem.

So, it’s a dry spell. That’s just how it goes sometimes around here when the trade winds lock in. Don’t give up – the forecast can always change, and it usually doesn’t stay this bad for long.

Rusty.
