The Lowdown
Alright, surf’s on the brain, so let’s get into it. The next two weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, with some clean windows and some sloppy ones, but there’s definitely a pulse of energy building towards the end.
First up, we’re looking at Ninja’s, a reef break that’s fairly consistent, but the opening days are a grind. Wednesday the 19th shows a cross-shore breeze and some lumpy conditions, with a 5ft SSW swell at 16 seconds. The energy is there, but it’s messy, and the 1848 combined energy reading is getting strong, but the surface is chopped up. It’s a day to be patient.
Thursday the 20th cleans up a touch with a cross-offshore wind, but the swell drops to 3ft and the energy falls to 911. It’s small and clean, but not really worth getting excited about. Friday the 21st keeps the clean trend with a cross-offshore wind and a short-period S swell at 8 seconds. That short period is a bit of a let-down; it’s going to be weak and wonky, even if it’s clean. The energy is down to 326 in the morning.
A bit of a gap forms here—there are a few days, from Saturday the 22nd through to Tuesday the 26th, where things are tiny, cross-shore, and just marginal. It’s all sub-3ft waves, energy readings in the low 200s to 400s. There’s not a whole lot to chase here. You're better off finding something else to do.
Now, here’s where it starts to get interesting. Thursday the 27th sees a pulse of SSW swell at 15 seconds and 4-5ft, with the energy jumping to 991. Still cross-shore, but the size and period are starting to build. It’s still marginal, but there’s a bit more push.
Then we finally get a standout. Saturday the 29th afternoon is the first real green light. The wind swings to a cross-offshore W breeze, and the swell bumps up to 3-4ft from the S with a long 19-second period. The combined energy is a strong 1274, and the wave comment calls it “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is the call. The long period will make it line up nicely on the reef, and clean conditions will make it glassy. It’s a Saturday, so expect crowds to be likely, but the quality should be worth it. This is the one to be on.
Sunday the 30th keeps the vibe going with a cross-offshore wind and a 4ft SSW swell. The energy is up to 1604, but it’s a little more jumbled. Still clean, but not as crisp as Saturday.
Now, the second week brings in the bigger stuff. Monday the 31st is a serious step up: 6-7ft of SSW swell at 18 seconds, with strong energy readings around 2635 and 2782. The wind is cross-offshore and clean. This is big and powerful. It’s over 5ft, so it’s pushing into expert territory, and at over 6ft, it’s definitely for the experienced crew. The period is 18 seconds, a proper groundswell, which is excellent on a reef like this. This could be the biggest, most powerful session of the window.
Tuesday the 1st of September holds on with 7ft of SSW swell, but the wind is a bit lighter and still cross-offshore. It’s big and clean, but the energy reading (2569) is a touch lower. Wednesday the 2nd sees it start to drop back to 5ft and the wind turns more cross-shore, making it less ideal. The rest of the week fades off with small, cross-shore waves in the 3ft range.
So, overall, the best of the session is Saturday the 29th afternoon—that clean, long-period pulse on a Saturday. It’s got everything going for it. And for you big-wave hounds, the 31st and 1st are the ones to circle, but bring your A-game and your big board. There’s a lot of average in between, but these two windows make it worth paying attention.
Rusty signing off.
