The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Ninja's. It's a reef break that's fairly consistent and works best on a southerly swell. The water's sitting at a warm 85°, which is a touch above the norm for this time of year – feels nice.
Alright, the honest truth is, the first week is a bit of a slow burn. The surf is small and the wind is a bit messy. Thursday the 17th and Friday the 18th of July offer some small, clean waves in the afternoons – we're talking 2ft to 2ft from the SSW on a nice 13 to 14 second period, but it's nothing to write home about.
We get a bit of a flat spell around Sunday, but then Tuesday the 22nd of July morning brings a moment of pure magic: glassy conditions with 3ft of short-period SSE swell. It's not big, but it'll be clean. The real standouts start to build on Thursday the 23rd of July. The swell picks up to 4ft from the SSE, with a period of 9 to 10 seconds, and the wind is either glassy or light cross-off. The energy is moderate (375 to 465), and it's clean. That Friday the 24th is similar—glassy again in the morning with 4ft swell and moderate energy (451). That Thursday and Friday morning are the best of the first week, hands down.
Now, the second week gets interesting, but it's more for the experienced crew. There's a big groundswell showing up. From Wednesday the 29th of July, we see a massive jump in energy (over 2100) with a very long-period SSW swell (21 to 22 seconds) pushing 5ft to 5ft. The wind is cross or cross-off, but the period is so long that these waves will be super powerful and a bit unpredictable on a reef. It's not beginner territory. The real standout of the whole 16-day window looks like Saturday the 1st of August. It's still a big swell, 6ft from the SSW with a 16-second period, but the wind switches to a light cross-off from the NW, cleaning things up nicely. The combined energy is pumping (2152). This is the one to circle on the calendar – it's a promising call for experienced surfers, but remember, it's a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
The gap between the small clean stuff on the 24th and the big groundswell on the 29th is a few days of small, windy, or cross-onshore junk. It's not a total loss, but the real juice is in that last weekend.
Rusty out.
