The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break this down.
First up, we’re looking at a stretch that starts slow. The first few days from Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 25th are pretty much a write-off—poor surf conditions, cross-shore breezes, and weak little waves that aren’t worth getting wet for. We’re talking 2ft to 3ft of messy, short-period swell, so don’t bother paddling out just yet. The combined energy is weak (303 to 277), and the wind just messes with what little shape there is.
Things start to change a bit by Wednesday the 26th. The swell picks up some period (16 seconds) and the energy jumps to moderate (548), but it’s still marginal. The wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not clean. We see that pattern hold through Thursday and Friday, with bigger swell (5ft on Thursday morning) but still not the right wind. The energy is getting stronger (1191 on Thursday morning), but the surf quality just isn’t there yet.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Saturday the 29th afternoon brings a clean cross-offshore wind and a solid 3ft swell from the SSW with a very long period of 19 seconds. That’s a groundswell, and it’s going to be better at a reef setup like Ninja's (a reef break). The energy is almost at 1000 (989) – moderate but solid. The water temperature here is 84°, which is about average for this time of year (0.5° anomaly), so no surprises there.
Sunday the 30th is the standout in the first week. Morning shows 4ft from the SW, 18-second period, clean cross-offshore wind, and energy at 1571 (moderate to strong). By the afternoon, it builds to 6ft with a 19-second period and energy at 2092 (strong). This is the best on offer for the whole outlook: good-sized, long-period groundswell with clean conditions. Crowds are possible at Ninja's, so keep that in mind. It’s a beginner-friendly reef, but 6ft might push it for total beginners—more of a fun intermediate zone.
Monday the 31st holds similar size (5–6ft) with clean cross-off winds in the afternoon, energy stays strong (2591–2684). But the wind is a bit stronger (12 mph), so it’s not as glassy.
Into the first week of September, the surf quality drops back. Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd have moderate cross-shore winds and smaller swell (4–5ft), with energy dropping. Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th turn choppy with cross-onshore wind and poor conditions. Not worth it.
But then, hold onto your board. Saturday the 5th afternoon turns glassy. Winds go calm, and we get 5ft from the SSE, 10-second period, and glassy conditions. Energy is moderate (428). Sunday the 6th afternoon also goes glassy with 5ft from the SSE. Monday the 7th is glassy all day with 4ft from the SSE, 10–11 second period. The energy is moderate (350–399). This is the second standout stretch: small but clean, glassy waves. Not big, but perfect for a longboard or a fun session. The 4–5ft is manageable for most surfers, and the glassy conditions make it worth the paddle.
Overall, the best days are Sunday the 30th of August (big, clean, long-period groundswell) and the glassy stretch from Saturday the 5th to Monday the 7th of September (small but clean and fun). For the rest, it’s mostly marginal or poor. Don’t bother with the first week unless you’re desperate.
Rusty.
