The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let's break down what's coming for us.
We've got a slow start, no doubt. Don't bother paddling out for the first few days because there's nothing doing. The first chance to get wet is on Saturday, August 22nd in the afternoon. Ninja's will see some small 4ft S swell, but with a 20 km/h cross-off wind, it'll be clean but weak. It's just a teaser.
Sunday, August 23rd through Tuesday, August 25th are a total loss. The swell vanishes and the cross-shore wind will chop everything up. Leave the board in the car.
Things get going on Wednesday, August 26th. The afternoon has a tiny 2ft S swell, but with an 18-second period. That's proper groundswell energy, but it's just too small to do much with in the cross-wind.
Thursday, August 27th is your first real go. The morning brings 5ft SSW groundswell at 16 seconds, with very strong energy. The wind is a light cross-shore from the SW at 10 km/h, keeping it clean. The water temp is 84°, which is right on the money for this time of year. That long period will give it some punch, but at a beach break it might run straight. Find a bank and you'll be set. The afternoon drops a bit in size but stays okay.
Friday, August 28th and Saturday, August 29th have smaller waves and stronger wind, so the quality slides.
Now, the big one: Sunday, August 30th afternoon. This is the day. We've got a solid 6ft SSW groundswell with a 19-second period, and the energy is huge. The wind is cross-off from the W at 20 km/h, so it'll be glassy. This is a serious swell – expert territory for sure. If you've got the skills, this is the session to target.
Monday, August 31st through Thursday, September 3rd keep the swell pumping, but a constant cross-shore wind puts a chop on everything. There's size, but it's ugly.
After that, from Friday, September 4th onward, the swell fades and the wind turns onshore. The second weekend (September 5th and 6th) is back to small, choppy junk.
So, your best bets: Thursday morning, August 27th for clean but powerful waves, and the absolute standout is Sunday afternoon, August 30th for the biggest, cleanest swell of the run. Don't miss it.
Rusty.
