The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.

The first proper chance to get wet rolls in on Tuesday, 21st July. It’s been a slow start, with Monday only offering knee-high, weak dribble from a short-lived SSW pulse, so give the first day a miss. From Tuesday morning though, things start to look up.

Ninja's is the only break on the radar, and it’s a reef setup that’s best with swell from the south. We’ve got a building window from Tuesday through to Sunday the 26th. Tuesday morning is the real eye-opener: glassy conditions, a clean 2ft of SSW groundswell with a period of 14 seconds, and combined wave energy sitting at 310 (moderate). The offshore wind is light, and the water temp is about average for the time of year, so no thermal surprises. That’s the session to target if you want uncrowded, clean lines – though do note that this spot *can* get busy, so be prepared to share.

Wednesday through Friday the 24th keep a consistent 4ft to 4ft of SSE swell, with periods around 8 to 9 seconds – a bit shorter, but still offering clean, fun waves thanks to light cross-offshore winds. The energy stays moderate (227 to 376), and the surf is reliable. By Saturday the 25th, the swell mixes up with a longer period SSW pulse (13 seconds) and combined energy climbing to 413 (moderate), and then Sunday the 26th sees the best of the week: 4ft of SE swell, 10-second period, and very high energy at 657 (strong). Winds are light offshore, and conditions are clean. That Sunday is the standout – the kind of day you call in sick for.

Come Monday the 27th, the wind shifts onshore, and the quality drops off. From there, the outlook gets messy. The end of July and start of August brings a few pulses of bigger SSW swell (5ft on the 30th, with energy hitting 1681 – very strong), but the wind is moderate to strong, often cross or cross-off, and the surf quality is described as marginal or poor. The 30th of July and 1st of August might offer something for experienced surfers willing to wrestle a bit of chop, but it’s not the clean, glassy stuff we had earlier. There’s a long gap of poor to marginal conditions from the 27th through to the 4th of August, with only a few fleeting windows of cleaner but still tricky surf.

Bottom line: get it while it’s good from Tuesday the 21st through Sunday the 26th, with Sunday the 26th being the absolute best on offer. After that, it’s a waiting game.

Rusty.
