The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming at Ninja's.
There’s a nice run of Southern Ocean groundswell over the next two weeks. The water temp is 85°F, just a touch warmer than the long-term average, so it’s comfortable. The first few days are a bit messy, but the good stuff is on the horizon.
Monday 17th August is a no-go – the swell is small and the wind is cross-shore with chop. Tuesday 18th August morning is the first standout, with a 6ft SSW swell, a 18-second period, and a light offshore wind. The combined energy is strong at 2355. This is proper groundswell, and the reef will handle that long period well. It’s one for the experienced crew.
Wednesday 19th August morning holds decent 5ft SSW swell, clean conditions, and the energy is still solid at 1837. The afternoon drops to 4ft but stays clean. A good session for the more confident.
The swell fades through the end of the week into the weekend, with small, clean waves under 3ft. There’s a lull from Friday 21st through Monday 24th.
Tuesday 26th August morning is a hidden gem: 4ft SSW swell, 15-second period, light offshore, clean conditions. The energy is moderate at 952, but the conditions are perfect.
The real highlight comes Saturday 29th August. The morning delivers 5ft SSW swell, 16-second period, light offshore, and clean conditions. The energy is 1140, and the swell direction is ideal. The afternoon is just as good. This is the standout session of the second week.
From Sunday 30th August, the swell builds to 6ft with 20-second groundswell, and the energy hits over 2000 on Sunday afternoon. It’s powerful, clean, and for experienced surfers only. The run continues through Monday 31st with 6ft swells and strong energy.
Crowds are often a factor here, so time your paddle wisely. The best calls are Tuesday 18th for the biggest, and Saturday 29th for the perfect blend.
Rusty.
