The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the coming weeks.

The outlook starts with a bit of a slow patch, but there’s a solid window of fun, clean waves coming up, and then a real beast of a swell rolls in towards the end of the month. The first few days are worth getting wet for, but the real standout is likely going to be that big pulse at the end.

Ninja’s starts us off on Thursday, July 16th. We’re looking at a clean, lined-up 2.6ft SW swell with a nice 14-second period and a gentle cross-off wind. The water is a warm 85.1°, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year. The wave energy is moderate (466). It’s a reef break, and it’s fairly consistent, so you’ll get plenty of waves. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but with that quality and the offshore flow, it’s going to be a fun one for everyone. Do expect a few others out there though, as crowds can be a thing here.

Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th see the swell ease back a touch. Friday is a bit of a write-off with a cross-shore wind, but Saturday looks promising. Saturday morning brings a glassy 2.0ft SSW swell, and the afternoon picks up to 3.0ft from the SSE. Both sessions are clean, with light winds. Sunday the 19th is a mixed bag; the morning has a shorter period (8 seconds) and a cross-shore wind, but the afternoon cleans up nicely with a 2.0ft SSW swell and a light cross-off breeze.

The real quality run starts on Monday, July 20th. The wind is light, but it’s a cross-on, so the surf is a bit marginal. The next morning, Tuesday the 21st, is a gem. The wind goes glassy, dead calm, with a clean 2.3ft SSW swell (14 seconds) and moderate energy (273). That’s your best bet for the first week. Wednesday the 22nd is glassy again in the morning, but the swell is a bit short-period (9 seconds) and ordinary.

The end of the first week and into the second sees a building trend. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th have clean, cross-off winds and the swell pushes up to 3.9ft and 4.3ft from the SSE. The wave energy is climbing into the strong range (554 on Friday afternoon). This is still a solid, clean run for a reef break.

After a mellow weekend on the 25th and 26th, the real heavy stuff shows up. From Monday the 27th, the wind turns onshore and the surf gets messy. Then, hold onto your board. On Wednesday, July 29th, the energy jumps to a massive 1649 as a long-period S swell arrives. By Thursday, July 30th, we’ve got a 7.5ft SSW groundswell with a 22-second period – that’s very long period. The combined energy is a staggering 4873. This is big, powerful, and for experts only. The wind is a moderate cross-off in the morning, so it might be clean, but that size and period at a reef break will be a handful. This is the standout by a long shot, but it’s a long-range call, so keep an eye on it. Friday the 31st stays big but the wind gets messy, making it a real challenge.
