The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s coming down the pipe for the next couple of weeks.
We’re looking at a pretty quiet run for a while, to be honest. The first proper surf worth getting out of bed for doesn’t kick off until the morning of Wednesday the 15th, and even then, it’s not exactly setting the world on fire. We’ve got a gap of no serious recommendations right at the start, so don’t hold your breath.
The first window of interest is around Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th at Ninja's. It’s a reef break, beginner-friendly, and fairly consistent. The swell is coming in from the SW at 3ft, with a period of 16 seconds dropping to 15 seconds. That’s a nice long-period groundswell, which means proper energy and shape, but it can be a bit straight at spots. For a reef, it should be fine. The wind is holding from the W and WNW, so it’s cross-offshore, keeping things clean. The water is sitting at 85°, which is about normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate at 580, so it’s surfable and fun, but nothing to write home about. Thursday morning looks similar, with 3ft SW swell and clean conditions. It’s small, but it’s clean.
Saturday the 18th brings a slight change. The swell drops to a shorter 9-second period from the S, still around 3ft. The wind holds cross-off from the W, so it’ll be clean again. The energy drops to 270, so it’s weaker, but it’s still a goer for a small-wave session.
Now, the real standout pops up on the horizon. Keep an eye on Wednesday the 29th and especially Thursday the 30th. That’s the one. We’ve got a SW groundswell building, with a 19-second period on the Wednesday morning hitting 3ft, then the Thursday morning sees a massive S swell at 3ft but with a 23-second period – that’s an incredibly long groundswell. The energy rockets up to 1165 on the Thursday, which is strong. By Thursday afternoon, the swell jumps to 4ft from the SSW with a 21-second period, and the energy is a whopping 2163. That is very strong wave energy. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the W, so the surf will be glassy and clean. This is the highlight of the whole period. It’s worth noting that long-period swell like this can be a bit straight at beach breaks, but at a reef like Ninja's, it will be a dream. The Thursday afternoon conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers, and I’d agree. This is a long-range call, so it’s not locked in, but if it comes together, it’ll be the best of the two weeks by a long shot.
Between the 15th and the 30th, there are a few other days with surfable 2ft to 4ft waves, mostly from the SSE and SW, with clean conditions. But nothing else really stands out like that final Thursday and Wednesday. The 24th of July has a 4ft SSE swell, but it’s shorter period, so it’s more of a fun little session.
Overall, the first week is small and clean, but the second week’s finale is the one to circle on the calendar. Keep your fingers crossed for that long-period groundswell.
Rusty out.
