Male Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, this is Rusty coming to you from the shores of the Maldives. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but it’s a game of two halves. The first week or so looks pretty average, but the end of the run is shaping up to be something special.

We’re looking at Male (Male) for the whole forecast. The water is sitting at a warm 85°, which is about normal for this time of year.

The first real surfable day kicks off Thursday afternoon, August 6th. We’ve got a 4ft south swell with a moderate 10-second period. The wind is cross-shore from the WSW at 15 mph, so it’s a bit messy. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 639. It’s a "poor surf conditions" kind of vibe, so don’t expect much.

Things don’t improve much through the weekend. Friday and Saturday are a mix of 5ft to 5ft south swell, but the wind stays cross-shore, keeping a chop on the surface. The waves are there, but the quality is just marginal. The energy fluctuates a bit, hitting 740 on Friday afternoon, but it’s still not clean enough to get excited about.

Monday afternoon, August 10th, is where we see a flicker of hope. The swell drops to 3ft, but it’s a long-period groundswell from the south at 20 seconds. The wind goes light and cross-offshore from the west, making for clean conditions. The energy is up to 802. It’s a "very good surf conditions" call, but it’s a small wave. A long period like that can make a reef break like Male a bit tricky, but it’s worth a paddle.

The rest of that week stays in the marginal zone. The swell sticks around 4ft to 5ft from the SSE, with a mix of cross-offshore and cross-shore winds. The energy is moderate, generally between 400 and 700. It’s clean enough on some afternoons, but nothing is really standing out. The consistency is there, but the quality isn’t.

Then we hit a bit of a lull over the weekend of August 16th and 17th. The swell drops right off, the wind is cross-shore, and the reports are all "poor surf conditions." There’s a gap of a couple of days where it’s just not worth it.

But hold on to your board, because Tuesday, August 18th is when the real deal arrives. There’s a new SSW groundswell pushing in at 6ft with a very long 18-second period. The combined energy is massive: 2046 on Tuesday morning, and 2008 in the afternoon. That’s strong to very strong energy. The wind is light and goes cross-offshore from the west in the afternoon, cleaning it up perfectly. This is "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." That 6ft is getting into the size where it’s good for those who know what they’re doing.

Wednesday, August 19th, is probably the standout of the whole forecast. The swell drops a touch to 5ft to 6ft from the south, but the period is still a massive 19 seconds. The energy is absolutely pumping at 2423 and 2494. The wind is light, with morning glass and afternoon cross-offshore conditions. This is the one. The long period makes it a groundswell that will really wrap into Male reef, offering powerful, hollow lines. The crowds are usually "often" here, so expect company. This is the call of the entire 16 days.

Thursday, August 20th, is still firing. The swell is 4ft to 5ft from the SSW with a 16-17 second period. The energy is still very strong, around 1479-1619. The wind stays light and cross-offshore in the afternoon. It’s still excellent.

The final days of the forecast, Friday, August 21st, see the swell drop back to 5ft to 5ft south swell, and the wind turns cross-onshore, chopping things up. The energy drops to 883. The magic is over.

So, to sum it up: the first week is a wash. The real gold is the window from August 18th to the 20th. If you can get out on Wednesday the 19th, you’ll be scoring the best waves of the month. The long period groundswell and light winds are a dream combo at Male. It’s a reef break, so it’s not for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s going to be absolutely pumping.
