Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking for our coast, now in good old feet and knots.
We’re starting on Saturday the 4th of July. Swell is about 5ft from the SSW, but there’s a light cross-on breeze at 6 mph, leaving a little wrinkle on the surface. The water is 77°, running about a degree warmer than usual for this time of year – nice and pleasant.
Sunday the 5th sees the swell holding around 5ft from the SW, with a long 16-second period, but the wind is still cross and messy. The combined energy is moderate. By afternoon, it jumps to 8ft from the SW at 14 seconds – that’s getting solid, but still a little chopped up. This is getting too big for beginners.
Monday the 6th is bumpy with a moderate cross breeze at 16 mph and swell around 7ft. Not the most inviting.
Now, Tuesday the 7th is the big one. Swell hits 10ft from the S at 12 seconds, and the wind goes cross-offshore, cleaning it up real nice. The energy is strong. But listen – 10ft is proper heavy. This is for the hardcore crew only. Clean, but not for the faint of heart.
Wednesday the 8th morning is still a big 10ft from the SE, but the wind drops to near nothing – glassy and clean. The afternoon eases back to 7ft from the SSE, glassy, with moderate energy. That window Wednesday afternoon is looking like a real winner for experienced surfers.
Thursday the 9th morning serves up 5ft from the SSE, glassy, with a 10-second period. Clean and fun for a wide range. The afternoon turns onshore and gets smaller.
Friday the 10th morning is tiny, around 3ft from the SSW, but with a long 15-second period and glassy conditions – a log day if ever there was one.
The standout for me is Saturday the 11th afternoon. We’ve got 7ft from the SW, a long 14-second period, and the wind is completely glass. The energy is solid. This is the kind of session you call in sick for. Just remember, long-period swell can be a bit straight on beach breaks – but if you’ve got any kind of point or reef, this will be epic.
Sunday the 12th stays strong with 8ft from the SSW, 15-second period, and light cross-off winds in the afternoon. Another expert session.
From Monday the 13th, the swell slowly drops. Monday has 7ft, then Tuesday the 14th is around 4ft, and by Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th, we’re looking at 3ft and 2ft, really small. The 16th morning is glassy but tiny.
Then, on Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th, we get a little pulse back. Friday morning has 6ft from the SSW, 15-second period, glassy – that’s clean and fun again. Saturday the 18th stays around 4ft and clean.
If I had to call it: Saturday the 11th afternoon is the session to chase. Glassy, solid size, long period. Wednesday the 8th afternoon is a close second. La Caffrine can get a crowd sometimes, so expect company, but with that quality, it’s worth it.
Stay sharp and watch the wind shifts.
Rusty.
