The Lowdown
Hey mates, Rusty back at ya. We’ve got a solid run of surf on the radar for La Caffrine, kicking off this Friday morning, 21 August. This isn’t a tease; the swell is here and it’s hanging around.
The water temperature is about 77°F, which feels a touch warmer than average for the calendar – real nice, no rubber needed.
Friday morning, 21 August – A clean start. We’ve got a 4ft SSW groundswell running on a 14-second period with glassy conditions. The wave energy is moderate (739), but that long period and clean surface will give you some smooth, lined-up rides. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but expect a few other folks in the water.
Saturday, 22 August – The swell pushes up to 6ft, still from the SSW, with a solid 14-second interval. Energy jumps nicely (1188), and with glassy conditions all day, this is a top-tier session for anyone with some experience.
Sunday, 23 August – This is the big one for the first week. Swell hits 8ft from the SW with a 14-second period. The water goes flat calm in the morning. Energy is huge at 2590, and the call is excellent for experienced surfers. If you’ve got the skills, the morning glass-off is mandatory. It’s too big for beginners.
Monday, 24 August – Just as good. It holds at 8ft, shifting slightly to the SSW, with energy still massive (2495). Conditions are glassy in the morning. Another killer day for the experienced crew.
Tuesday, 25 August – Drops to 6ft, but still clean in the morning with light winds. The afternoon gets a bit of a crosswind, so get out before lunch.
Wednesday, 26 August – A smaller morning with 5ft SW swell and glass, good for a fun session. The afternoon serves up a 4ft SSW groundswell with a very long 16-second period (energy 1521) – it’ll be powerful for the size, but those long-period lines can be tricky.
Thursday, 27 August – Swell back up to 8ft with a very long 17-second period (energy 4141) in the morning, but the wind is onshore. Afternoon is 6ft and 18 seconds (energy 4155), but a 12 mph cross-shore wind makes it rough.
Friday, 28 August – Warning: the swell is predicted to be 16ft from the SSW. Energy is insane (12,237). It’s too big for this break. Experts only, and with caution. Saturday, 29 August is 15ft then 13ft – still way too big.
Sunday, 30 August – The recovery. Morning is still 10ft with a cross-onshore breeze. The afternoon is the second standout: 8ft from the S on a 14-second period, with flat calm seas and glassy conditions (energy 2650). If you missed last Sunday, this is your shot. Excellent for experienced surfers.
From Monday, 31 August onward, we settle into a nice run. Monday morning is 4ft SSW, glassy. Tuesday, 1 September is tiny at 2ft SW but clean – perfect for a beginner or a longboard. Wednesday, 2 September offers a 4ft SW groundswell with glassy morning conditions (energy 572).
The end of the outlook fades a little with smaller, wind-affected waves Thursday through Saturday morning, but Saturday afternoon, 5 September signs off with a clean 5ft SW swell, 16-second period, and glassy conditions (energy 1367). A beauty to close it out.
Best Bet: Sunday morning, 23 August. The 8ft SW groundswell with flat calm is the premier session.
Second Pick: Sunday afternoon, 30 August. The 8ft S swell with a glass-off is a serious contender.
The surf is consistent once it starts Friday, so you won't be staring at flat water for long.
– Rusty
