The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for La Caffrine. This is a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent, exposed to SSW swells, and it can get crowded sometimes. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The week kicks off with a solid pulse of groundswell. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are the real standouts here. We’ve got a SW swell pushing 8ft with a long 14 to 15 second period, and the wind is dead glassy. That’s about as clean as it gets. The combined energy is strong at 2590, so there’s plenty of push. This is excellent for experienced surfers – the waves will have real shape and power. Beginners might find it a bit much with the size over 5ft.
Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th morning see the swell backing off a touch to 5-6ft, but the wind goes cross-on, so the surface gets a bit bumpy. It’s still surfable, but not at the same level. Energy drops to moderate (885-1204). Wednesday afternoon, the wind glassies up again and the swell goes super long period at 18 seconds, but only 4ft. That long period at a beach break can make it break straight, so it’s a bit of a caveat, but the conditions will be clean.
Then things get serious. Thursday the 27th through Saturday the 29th, the swell absolutely pumps up, hitting 10ft to 15ft from the SSW with massive energy (4927 to 11309). This is expert-only territory. The wind is cross to cross-off, so the waves will be clean, but the size is too big for this break. It’s more of a spectacle than a paddle. For a beginner-friendly spot, this is really only for very experienced surfers in the know.
Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st calm down a bit, with swell dropping to 7-8ft and cleaner cross-off winds. Energy is still moderate to strong (1955-3683). The period drops on Monday to 9 seconds, so it’s more of a windswell, but conditions are clean.
We hit a flat spell from Tuesday the 1st of September through to Thursday the 3rd. Only tiny waves around 2-3ft with weak energy (168-304). It’s glassy, but you’ll be struggling for a ride.
Things pick back up on Friday the 4th with a 5ft SW swell, 14 second period, and clean cross-off wind. Energy is moderate (1025). Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th see a mix of glassy mornings and clean afternoons, with swell around 3-5ft and very long periods (15-19 seconds). That long period will give great shape at this break, but it means longer waits between sets. Energy is moderate (857-1055). Monday the 7th of September looks promising with a 4ft SSW groundswell at 16 seconds and glassy conditions – another excellent call for experienced surfers, with moderate energy (1225).
Overall, the best on offer is Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th of August. That combo of 8ft SW swell, 14-15 second period, and glassy wind is as good as it gets for a clean, powerful session at La Caffrine. For the second week, the Monday the 7th of September morning stands out as a promising, clean groundswell day.
