The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got the outlook for La Caffrine.
First up, we’ve got a solid run of surf coming through, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag with the conditions. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild there.
The first real chance to get wet kicks off on Friday morning, July 17th. We’re looking at a clean 4ft swell from the south, with a really long period of 17 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and with the wind glassy out of the WNW, it’s going to be smooth. The combined energy is moderate (690). This is a good one for the beginner-friendly break, but that long period might make it a bit walled at a beach break, so keep your eyes open.
That afternoon, the wind swings to the south-southwest and turns cross-on, and the quality drops off. It gets choppy and messy, so I’d call it a morning session only.
Saturday the 18th starts similarly glassy, with a 4ft south swell, though the period drops to 13 seconds. Still fun, clean surf for the morning. Afternoon gets a bit bumpy again.
Sunday the 19th is another glassy morning, with a 3ft groundswell from the southwest at 16 seconds. Clean and smooth. The afternoons are just not worth it this week.
Now, here’s the standout for the first week. Monday, July 20th is the one to circle. The swell jumps to 6ft in the morning, climbing to 8ft by the afternoon, both from the SSW. The period is a solid 13 seconds. But the wind? Dead calm in the morning, glassy in the afternoon. The combined energy jumps to strong (1551 and 1961). This is excellent surf, but at 8ft, it’s getting into the expert zone. Beginners should sit this one out.
Tuesday the 21st sees the swell holding at 6ft, but the wind goes cross or cross-on, making it a bit of a mess. Not the best.
The rest of the week into the 23rd and 24th offers smaller, cleaner windows with 4ft to 5ft swells and glassy or cross-off winds, but nothing that really jumps out compared to Monday.
Then we get to Sunday, July 26th. This is another big standout. The morning starts with a tiny 3ft swell, but with a very long period of 19 seconds from the SSW. That’s a lot of energy for a small wave (combined energy is 1395). The wind is glassy. It’s excellent for experienced surfers, but that long period means it’ll be better on a point or reef than a beach break. The afternoon, however, is a monster. The swell jumps to 7ft from the SW, period 18 seconds, and the wind is clean cross-off. The combined energy is very strong (2765). This is world-class potential, but again, it’s for experienced paddlers.
Now, from Monday July 27th through the end of the forecast, the swell gets seriously big. We’re talking 10ft to 12ft, with periods up to 20 seconds. The combined energy hits five digits (8554, 7165, 4387, etc.). The wind is often favorable, but the swell is just too big for this break. It’s going to be a washing machine, and the forecast clearly says it’s too big for this spot. This is more in the realm of big-wave specialists or maybe kite surfers. The 28th morning shows a 8ft swell with clean cross-off wind, which is excellent for experts, but by the afternoon, it’s getting messy again.
The very end of the month, July 31st, has a 6ft swell with super long period (20 seconds) and strong cross-shore wind, making it lumpy and tricky.
So, the two true standouts are Monday, July 20th for the clean, building swell, and Sunday, July 26th for the combination of very long-period groundswell and clean conditions. Both are for experienced surfers. The rest of the window has waves, but the conditions are hit or miss, especially in the afternoons. After the 26th, it’s just too big for a fun paddle.
Rusty.
