The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, checkin' in with the outlook for La Caffrine. We're startin' off Sunday the 23rd of August with some absolute magic on the cards, so let's get stuck in.
First thing, the water's sitting at 77°F, which is a touch warmer than we usually see this time of year – real nice for a long session.
This first block is the clear standout of the whole run. Sunday morning the 23rd, we've got a solid 8ft SW groundswell, rolling in with a long 14-second period. The combined energy is pumping (2590), and the wind is glassy out of the WSW at just 3 mph. It's gonna be clean, lined-up, and powerful. This is waves for experienced surfers – that size means it's no place for beginners. Sunday afternoon holds the same quality, glassy again, just a touch smaller at 8ft.
Monday the 24th picks up where Sunday left off. The morning is absolute perfection: 8ft on the face, period dropping to 15 seconds from the SSW, and the wind is dead calm. That's a zero on the wind meter, glassy as a mirror. Combined energy is even bigger at 2846. Monday afternoon turns a little cross-off with a 3 mph ESE breeze, but the 8ft SW swell cleans up beautifully, still giving you excellent waves.
Tuesday the 25th, we start to see it back off. The swell dips to 6ft, and a light cross-on breeze creeps in. Still rideable for the keen ones, but the magic is fading.
Wednesday the 26th is a bit of a lull in the morning with 6ft and cross-on wind, but keep an eye on Wednesday afternoon. The swell drops to 4ft, but the period jumps to a massive 18 seconds – that's a very long period groundswell. The wind goes glassy again (0 mph). For a spot like La Caffrine, this long period will be a bit straight on the face, so it's a refine-your-turns sort of session, but the conditions will be pristine.
Now brace yourselves for the 27th of August. The swell jumps to a serious 10ft with a 17-second period, and combined energy is blasting over 5300. Wind is cross-shore. This is a beast of a wave, but honestly, it's too big for this break – expert only, and even then, it's a handful. This massive energy continues right through the 28th, 29th, and 30th, with waves hitting 15ft on Friday the 28th and energy numbers over 10,000. The wind stays cross-off for most of it, keeping the face clean, but the sheer power makes it a kite-surfing playground more than a paddle-surfing one. If you're a big-wave charger, go for it, but know your limits.
Things finally drop back on Sunday the 31st of August into Monday the 1st of September. We get a 10ft swell on the 31st with glassy conditions, but the direction shifts to ESE with a shorter period (10 sec). Still big, still not for the faint of heart.
After that, we hit a proper flat spell. From Tuesday the 1st of September right through to Friday the 4th, the swell is tiny – mostly under 3ft with weak energy and onshore or cross-on wind. It's a write-off for the most part. You might snag a 3ft wave on Thursday the 3rd with a 14-second period, but it’s marginal at best.
Then, out of nowhere, we get a glimpse of hope for the second weekend. Saturday the 5th of September sees a little pulse with 3ft clean waves in the afternoon.
But the real long-range standout is Sunday the 6th of September. The swell jumps back to 7ft with a 20-second period – that is a *very* long period groundswell, packing a massive 3501 combined energy. The wind is glassy in the morning. This is the one to circle on your calendar. It's a long way out, so keep your fingers crossed, but if it holds, Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th (with 8ft and glassy conditions again in the afternoon) will be the next proper swell window.
So to wrap it up: this Sunday and Monday are your gold standard. The middle of the week is big and gnarly, best left to the chargers or the kiters. Then a flat spell hits, and we're looking at Sunday the 6th of September as the next promising return of clean, powerful swell.
Stay stoked, stay safe.
Rusty.
