The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for La Caffrine.
The week starts off a bit slow, but there's some fun little waves on Wednesday morning, July 15. We’re looking at a clean 4ft SSW swell with glassy conditions – that’s about as good as it gets for a small day. The water’s sitting at 76°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there. The swell energy is moderate (682), and with that 12-second period, those waves will have a bit of shape to them. Perfect for a beginner or anyone wanting a longboard session. Crowds can show up here sometimes, but on a Wednesday morning, you might dodge the worst of it.
The next few days are a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday (July 16) has a smaller 2ft S swell with clean offshore wind in the morning, but it’s not really building. Friday and Saturday get a bit messy with rain showers and cross-shore winds, and the swell is inconsistent. Nothing to get too excited about.
Then Sunday morning, July 19, things start to look up again. Glassy conditions again, with a 3ft SW swell that has a long 16-second period. The energy is moderate (521). That long period means the waves will have some punch for their size, but at a beach break like this, it might be a bit straight. Still, a clean Sunday glass-off is always worth a look.
Now, the real standout is further out. From Monday July 20 onwards, the swell cranks up. Monday morning sees a 8ft SW swell with a 15-second period, and the energy jumps to strong (2380). That’s getting into proper territory. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it won’t be glassy, but it’ll still be surfable. By Tuesday July 21, it’s holding around 7-8ft, but the wind is a bit more cross-shore, so expect some chop.
But the absolute best of the whole window is the last week. On Sunday July 26, we’ve got a 7ft SW swell with an 18-second period and glassy conditions – dead calm wind. The energy is very strong (2915). That’s a serious groundswell. Then Monday July 27 keeps it going with 8ft SW swell and clean offshore wind. The energy is massive (3607). This is expert territory – over 8ft, you need to know what you’re doing. On Tuesday July 28, it’s still pumping with a 8ft SSW swell and a super long 19-second period, energy through the roof (4594). That’s a proper groundswell that will be peeling nicely if the sandbanks are right.
The last few days of the month, July 29 and 30, continue with excellent conditions. The 30th has a 8ft SSW swell with 18-second period and glassy conditions – an absolute dream for experienced surfers. The energy is off the charts (4531). Keep in mind, these later dates are a bit further out, so the forecast is less certain, but if it comes together, it’ll be the best run of the whole forecast.
So, to sum it up: the best of the best is Sunday July 26 through to Tuesday July 28, with the 30th also looking incredible. Get your board ready for that second week.
