The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking.
Right off the bat, the outlook for La Caffrine is a slow burn. We’ve got some average waves this Friday the 21st, with light cross-onshore wind and 4ft swell from the southwest. That’s not really worth paddling out for. But hold on—Saturday morning, August 22, is where it starts to come alive. The swell bumps to 6ft from the SW with a solid 14-second period, and the wind goes glassy. That’s clean, lined-up, proper surf. The water temp is about average for this time of year—nothing weird going on there.
Sunday morning the 23rd cranks it up again: 8ft of SW groundswell, still glassy. The combined energy is a strong 2603 (moderate-to-strong energy), and the long-period swell at 14 seconds will give it good shape, though at that size it’s more for experienced surfers only. Through Monday the 24th, the swell holds at 8ft, glassy conditions again with zero wind in the morning—absolutely clean. Still expert territory.
The standout of the whole period, without a doubt, is Wednesday morning the 26th, and then Saturday the 29th onwards. Wednesday the 26th afternoon has a glassy 4ft swell from the SSW with a very long 17-second period—that’s proper groundswell energy (1538) and should offer clean, powerful lines at this break. Then Saturday the 29th through Sunday the 30th sees more big surf: Saturday morning the swell is 13ft from the SSW with 16 seconds—that’s way too big for anyone except absolute experts, cross-off wind though, so it’s clean. Sunday the 30th morning, the swell drops to 8ft from the S with glassy wind and excellent conditions. That’s the sweet spot for strong experienced surfers. The combined energy on Sunday afternoon is a burly 4068—real grunt.
From Monday the 31st, the swell backs off steadily. The mornings get smaller, and by Tuesday September 1st, it’s only 2ft, though with a remarkable 18-second period—long gaps between sets, but you’ll need patience. After that, it becomes a mix of marginal and small surf right through to Friday September 5th. There’s a promising window Thursday afternoon September 4th with 4ft and a 16-second period and clean cross-off wind, but it’s not a standout compared to the big days earlier.
One thing to mention: La Caffrine is an exposed break and it’s fairly consistent, but beginners should steer clear entirely when the swell is over 5ft—which it is for several days. This spot can get occasional crowds, so be ready for company on the glassy mornings.
Overall, the best of the best is Sunday August 30, both morning and afternoon: 8ft to 8ft S swell, glassy or near-calm wind, excellent conditions for skilled surfers, and high energy. That’s your session.
Rusty.
