The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at the stretch ahead. It’s gonna be a slow burner for a while, but there’s some serious juice on the horizon if you can wait it out.
The next few days are pretty lackluster. Swell is small and the winds, while light, are all over the shop. It’s more of a “sit on the beach and watch the horizon” kind of vibe than a “get wet” one. We’re looking at a quiet start, with the first real glimmer of hope showing up on Friday the 21st.
Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th are flat and forgettable. We’ve got some ankle-biters in the 3ft to 4ft range, but the light winds are mostly cross or cross-on, making things a bit lumpy. The water’s a touch warmer than normal at 77°F, which is nice, but it’s not enough to get me excited. Thursday the 20th drops off further, with a tiny 2ft of long-period swell, but glassy conditions will make it look better than it is. Still, you’re hunting for a ripple, not a wave.
Friday the 21st is where the pickup starts. We’ve got a clean 4ft to 5ft of SW swell pushing in with a 14-second period, and it’s glassy. This is the first day you’d actually paddle out with a bit of stoke. The energy is moderate, but the quality is what counts. Things start to build over the weekend.
Saturday the 22nd sees the swell jump to 6ft, but the winds go a bit cross and cross-on, taking some of the shine off. It’s still surfable, but it’s getting a bit more challenging. Then Sunday the 23rd is a proper standout. We’re looking at a solid 8ft of SSW groundswell with a 14-second period, and it’s glassy in the morning. This is a big step up in energy and quality, but it’s getting into the territory where it’s for the more experienced crew. The wind swings light cross-off in the afternoon, keeping it clean. Monday the 24th stays in the 6ft to 6ft range, with clean conditions in the morning before the wind gets a bit messy later.
The real monster arrives on Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th. Watch out, because this is when it gets serious. We’re talking 10ft of swell, and the writing is on the wall: it’s just too big for La Caffrine at that point. The energy readings are off the charts, but that’s not a good thing for a paddle surfer. This setup looks far more interesting for a kite surfer than a regular surfer. Stay off the board if you’re not a pro.
After that, the swell eases but remains substantial. Thursday the 27th is a write-off as it’s still too big and gusty with strong cross-off winds. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th keep that powerful pulse going, with 8ft to 10ft of swell. It’s powerful, but Saturday afternoon might offer a window as it drops to 8ft with clean cross-off winds, making it a maybe for the brave.
From Sunday the 30th onwards, we see a downward trend. The swell backs off to the 5ft to 6ft range, and it becomes more manageable. The winds are mostly cross-off or glassy, keeping things fun. The start of the second week, Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd, shows some clean, smaller surf around the 4ft to 5ft mark. It’s not huge, but the quality is okay. The long-range stuff is promising but less certain.
So, the standout days are Sunday the 23rd with the glassy, solid SSW groundswell, and Monday the 24th morning, which offers a slightly smaller but still clean swell. Those are your best bets for a proper session. The rest of the time, you’re just waiting for the ocean to decide what it wants to do.
Rusty.
