The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s cut to it. It’s a slow start, but there’s some real size and quality heading our way. Don’t get too worked up about the early days—the ocean’s a bit tangled—but if you can pick your moment, it’s going to be worth it.
We open with a couple of so-so days. Monday the 17th sees some chest-high, 5ft swell from the south with a 13-second period. There’s some energy there, about 1949, but the wind is crossing onshore and messing up the surface. Tuesday drops to 4ft, energy down to 1013, and it’s still not clean. Wednesday is smaller, down to 3ft, with the period dropping to 11 seconds and the energy in the 300s. It’s weak and uninviting.
The first real sign of life comes Thursday the 20th. It’s small—only 2ft to 3ft—but the swell has shifted to the southwest and the period has jumped to 16 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and the wind goes glassy, so the surface will be clean. The energy is still modest, around 443, but it’ll be the best-looking waves so far. Friday the 21st pushes up a little to 4ft from the southwest with a 14-second period. The morning is cross-onshore, but the afternoon glass-off is promising, with the energy at 759. That Friday afternoon session could be fun on a longboard.
Now, this is where it gets good. Saturday the 22nd brings a real jump. The swell is 5ft from the southwest, with a 14-second period. The morning is glassy, and the energy is over 1000, at 1020. That’s the first proper pulse. This is a decent size for La Caffrine (Côte Ouest), and with clean conditions, it’s looking like a good day to get some waves. Sunday the 23rd is where it gets serious. The swell builds to 10ft on Sunday morning. That’s a big step up, and with a 14-second period, it’s got some serious power, with the energy hitting 3338. That’s just too big for this spot, especially for the average punter. This is expert-only territory. The afternoon drops to a still-chunky 8ft, which is more manageable but still heavy. Monday the 24th is still solid, with 6ft to 7ft from the SSW, and the energy is around 1359. The morning glass is good, but it’s still pushing limits.
Then we hit a bit of a lull. Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th see the swell stick around 6ft to 8ft, but the wind becomes cross-onshore and messy, with the energy jumping between 1326 and 3328. The conditions just aren’t cooperating. Thursday the 27th is a bit cleaner with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell has backed off to 7ft, and it’s not as crisp.
But hold on. Friday the 28th is the one to circle. The swell jumps right back up to a solid 10ft from the SSW with a 16-second period. That’s a big, powerful groundswell, and the energy is absolutely pumping, hitting a huge 4904. The wind is cross-offshore and clean, which is the perfect combo for this break. But again, at 10ft, this is only for the experienced crew. It’s way too big for beginners. If you’re not confident, give it a miss. Saturday the 29th eases off a touch to 7ft from the SSW, with the period dropping to 13-14 seconds. The wind is still cross-offshore and clean, so the surf will still have some good shape. This might be a better option for the more competent surfer who wants a piece of the action without the maxed-out size.
After that, the swell fades. Sunday the 30th drops to around 4ft, and the energy is back under 1000. The wind is glassy in the morning, but it’s looking pretty cruisy. Monday the 31st is small, around 3ft, with a long period again. Tuesday the 1st of September shows a bit of life with 4ft from the SSW, and the morning is glassy, which would be a nice, clean end to the run.
So, where’s the best surf? If you’re an experienced surfer, the standout is that early pulse on the 22nd and 23rd, but especially the 23rd morning if you have the skills for that size. But the real gem, the one that’s got it all, is the 28th. The size is maxed, the energy is huge, and the wind is clean. It’s not for everyone, but it’s a proper day. For the rest of us, that Saturday the 22nd morning and the 29
