The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board, let’s have a look at what’s comin’ for La Caffrine over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, so right now, we’ve got a bit of a slow start. The first couple of days are looking pretty marginal, with small swell and not the best conditions. The water is sitting at 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first real sign of life comes in on Saturday, August 22nd in the morning. We’ll see a solid 6 ft swell from the southwest, with a period of 14 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and with the wind going glassy, it’s going to be clean. The combined energy is moderate at 1090, so there’s some push behind it. This is for the more experienced crew though, as it’s a bit much for beginners.
Then things really start to fire up on Sunday, August 23rd. The morning is looking like a standout with a 7 ft SSW swell, 14-second period, and glassy conditions again. The energy jumps up to 2039, which is strong. The afternoon is just as good, with the wind dropping to zero and the swell holding. This is the kind of day you call in sick for.
The quality continues into Monday, August 24th with a clean 6 ft SW swell in the morning under glassy skies. The energy is still strong at 1460. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might get a bit of company, but it’s worth it.
Tuesday, August 25th afternoon is another one to circle. That 8 ft SSW swell with 14-second period and glassy wind is a serious proposition. The energy is very strong at 2531 – this is for experienced surfers only. It’s going to be a big, powerful day.
Now, after that, things get a bit wild. From Wednesday, August 26th through to Friday, August 28th, the swell gets huge – we’re talking 10 ft to 18 ft. The wind is favourable, but it’s just too big for this break. This is definitely kite-surfing territory, not a paddle session.
The surf starts to settle back into a more manageable range from Saturday, August 29th onwards. The morning of the 29th has a clean 7 ft S swell with cross-offshore winds, which is good for experienced surfers.
The last real standout of the run is on Monday, August 31st. The morning has a clean 6 ft SSW swell with a very long 16-second period, and it’s glassy. The energy is strong at 2754. This is a proper point-break or reef wave, that long period should make for some beautiful, lined-up walls. The afternoon is clean too.
Looking further out, Tuesday, September 1st afternoon looks fantastic with a 6 ft SSW swell, 14-second period, clean conditions, and a score that suggests this is the best of the whole run. The energy is very strong at 3715, but it’s still a manageable size.
So, my pick for the best sessions? You’ve got two. Sunday, August 23rd morning for pure power and perfection, and Tuesday, September 1st afternoon for the best all-round combo of size, condition, and energy. Don’t be late.
Rusty.
