The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break it down in feet and miles per hour.

The next couple of days are pretty flat, but hang tight – there’s a solid run of clean, powerful swell coming, especially for the experienced surfers.

First up, La Caffrine is a beginner-friendly spot, fairly consistent, and exposed to the south-southwest. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.

Wednesday the 19th is a dud: a tiny 3ft south swell at 11 seconds, light cross-onshore wind. Energy is weak at 358. Not worth suiting up.

Thursday the 20th: a bit more life. Morning brings a glassy 2ft swell from the southwest, but the period is a very long 16 seconds – groundswell that can sometimes break a bit straight on a beach break, but it’ll still offer a few fun ones in clean conditions. Energy is moderate at 443. The afternoon stays glassy with similar size and a 15-second period.

Friday the 21st: swell builds to 4ft from the southwest, 14 seconds. Morning has an onshore wind, so a bit bumpy. But the afternoon turns glassy – light offshore – and the energy climbs to 716. That’s the pick of the early days: clean, chest-high waves, decent shape.

Saturday the 22nd: swell bumps up to 6ft from the southwest, but the wind goes cross and cross-onshore, putting a bit of chop on the face. Energy is moderate-strong at 1188. It’s okay, but not the best.

Sunday the 23rd is the standout. Morning sees 8ft of clean southwest swell, 14-second period, and glassy conditions. Energy is strong at 2554. This is excellent for experienced surfers – too big for beginners. The afternoon holds with 8ft and glassy wind. The water stays clean, and the sets will have proper power.

Monday the 24th is nearly as good: 8ft from the south-southwest, glassy all day, with strong energy (2611 in the morning). Another day for the experienced crew only.

Tuesday the 25th: the morning drops to 6ft with onshore wind – messy. But the afternoon comes back with 7ft from the south-southwest, a very long 16-second period, and glassy conditions. Energy is strong at 2266. This is a solid session if you can time the tide right.

From Wednesday the 26th through Saturday the 29th, the swell goes big – 10ft to 12ft from the south-southwest, with periods up to 17 seconds. That’s way over 8ft, so experts only. The wind is mostly cross-offshore, so the faces will be clean, but the energy is huge (up to 7335). For a beach break setup, this is really more of a kite-surfing zone than paddle surfing – the waves will be heavy and the currents strong.

Sunday the 30th: the swell drops back to 8ft from the south, 14 seconds, glassy in the morning. Energy is strong at 2216. This is a good, clean day for experienced surfers again.

Monday the 31st: smaller at 5ft from the south, 12 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze. Clean and manageable. Energy is moderate at 1034.

Into the first week of September, the swell stays around 4ft to 6ft, mostly from the southwest, with periods between 14 and 17 seconds. The winds are a mix of cross and cross-offshore, so conditions will be clean but not glassy. Energy stays moderate to strong, around 1400 to 1800. These are fun, solid days for intermediate to experienced surfers, but nothing that will blow your mind.

So, to sum it up: the real gold is Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th – big, clean, powerful southwest swell with glassy conditions. For the rest, keep an eye on the afternoons when the wind drops. Don’t bother with the 26th to 29th unless you’ve got a kite.
