The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for this stretch.
We've got a solid run of groundswell on the way for La Caffrine, but it's not for the faint-hearted. The water is sitting at a balmy 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thick rubber at home.
The first decent action kicks off on Saturday the 22nd. It's a bit of a tester, with 6ft of SW swell, a 13-second period, and light cross-shore wind. The energy's already pumping at 1345 (moderate to strong), but it's described as marginal, so don't expect perfection.
Then Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are where it gets really interesting. We're looking at 8ft of SW swell, swinging to SSW, with a 14 to 15-second period. The wind is glassy – completely off the chart. The energy readings are massive: 2590, 2290, 2810 and 2227 (strong to very strong wave energy). This is groundswell with real grunt, and with that long period, it's going to be powerful and clean. But, and this is a big but, at 8ft, this is strictly for experienced surfers only. The long period also means it might be a bit too straight for some beach breaks, but at an exposed spot like this, the power will be there. Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th still hold plenty of clean swell, dropping from 6ft to 4ft, with that glassy wind holding in.
Now, if that 8ft didn't get your attention, take a look at what happens later. Thursday the 27th of August through to Saturday the 29th sees a monster pulse. We're talking 10ft to 15ft of SSW groundswell, with periods of 16 to 18 seconds. The energy readings are off the scale: 5044, 5480, 10117, 11450, 7298, 6423 (very strong). The wind is cross-off and clean for most of it, but the files are clear: this is too big for this break. You'd need to be a madman or a tow-in expert. Kite surfers, this is your window.
After that big blowout, things settle down. Sunday the 30th offers a more manageable 8ft of S swell with clean cross-off winds, which is a great window for the confident surfer. The energy is still solid at 3782. After that, the surf really drops off. From the 31st of August, we're into much smaller, onshore and messy conditions for nearly a week, with tiny 2ft to 5ft swells and poor winds. The energy falls right off to below 1000, and by the 1st and 2nd of September, it's barely a ripple. There is a glimmer of hope on the 3rd of September with a clean 4ft SW swell (energy 556), but it’s not a standout.
So, the standout? It’s got to be the run from Sunday the 23rd through Monday the 24th of August. That’s your best shot: solid 8ft SSW groundswell, glassy conditions, and a strong, reliable energy. It’s a clean, powerful, classic setup for the experienced crew. Keep the big wave board handy for the 27th and 28th if you're a nutter.
Rusty.
