The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what we’ve got coming down the line. We’re looking at a classic run from small and clean, building into some serious grunt, but you’ve got to be smart about where and when you paddle out.

First up, La Caffrine is the only game in town. Water temps are sitting at a nice 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a springsuit.

We start off Thursday the 20th real small. Glassy conditions with a 2ft swell from the SW, with a long 16-second period. The wave energy is moderate (443), so it’ll be weak but beautifully clean for the longboard or a foiler. Friday the 21st sees the swell bump up to 4ft, and while the morning has a bit of cross-chop, Friday afternoon goes glassy again with some real clean lines. This is a solid entry-level window.

Now, Saturday the 22nd is where things start to cook. That swell pushes to 6ft from the SW with a 14-second period. The wave energy jumps to strong (1188) and with glassy wind all day, La Caffrine will be firing with proper, powerful walls. This is the first real standout of the forecast. It’s a beginner-friendly break, so if you’re looking to step up, this glassy morning is your shot.

Sunday the 23rd morning, we’re looking at a solid 8ft SW swell with glassy conditions and massive energy (2590). This is getting into expert territory, but the quality is undeniable. Sunday afternoon the wind swings a bit cross-on, dropping the quality, so stick to the early session.

Monday the 24th is the peak of this run. An 8ft swell from the SSW, still with that long 14-second period, and completely glassy conditions all day. The energy is massive (2966). This is the absolute best of the forecast. If you can handle a heavy, powerful wave, this is the session to circle.

The swell starts to back off through Tuesday the 25th and into Wednesday the 26th, dropping back to 5-6ft, but the wind gets messy with cross-shore and cross-onshore breezes. The quality dips here.

Then we hit a wall. Thursday the 27th through Saturday the 29th morning, the swell absolutely detonates, hitting 10ft to 15ft. The energy readings are off the charts (over 10,000). The wind is clean, but this is simply too much water moving for La Caffrine. This is strictly for the tow crew or the kamikaze. Better to watch from the cliff or take up golf.

It settles back down from Saturday the 29th afternoon onward. Saturday afternoon offers a solid 8ft SSW swell with clean cross-off winds – a good call for experienced surfers back in the water. Sunday the 30th drops to a fun 5ft with glassy morning conditions. We get another shot of clean, long-period swell on the 4th of September with 5ft from the SW and glassy wind, wrapping up the run in style.

The Takeaway: The window from Saturday the 22nd through Monday the 24th is your absolute best bet. Saturday morning for the bigger beginner/intermediate, and Monday the 24th for the expert looking for a proper, clean beast. The middle of the second week is a write-off for paddle surfing unless you’ve got a death wish.

Rusty.
