The Lowdown
Alright, your boy Rusty here again, looking at the same forecast for La Caffrine, but in feet and miles per hour.
The water is sitting at about 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing wild, but a nice little bonus.
The pattern starts off with some clean, small surf on Thursday, 20 August. That first morning is glassy with a 2ft SSW swell at 16 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 443. It’s a slow, long-period groundswell, so the sets are spaced out, but the shape should be decent for the size. Thursday afternoon stays glassy with a similar SSW swell.
Friday, 21 August sees a bump in size to 4ft, but the morning has a cross-on wind that messes with the surface. The afternoon cleans right up with glassy conditions and a 4ft SSW swell. The energy is ramping up – 701 – and it’s looking very good.
Now, Saturday, 22 August is where things start to get proper. The swell is up to 6ft from the SSW, period is 14 seconds, and the energy is strong (1188). The wind is glassy all day. This is a solid, clean, fun size for an experienced beginner.
Sunday, 23 August, the swell pushes to 8ft in the morning, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag with a cross-onshore wind messing the tide. The afternoon is the standout: glassy, 8ft SSW swell, energy at 2290. That’s big, clean, and powerful – perfect for the experienced crew.
The following Monday, 24 August, it’s still pumping. 8ft SSW swell, glassy, energy at 2611. This is the best of the run – clean, solid, and consistent. For the experienced, this is your window.
The swell drops a little on Tuesday, 25 August, to 6ft in the morning, still glassy, but the afternoon gets a bit of a cross-shore wind which makes it a bit messy. Still, the morning is a winner.
Wednesday, 26 August, the wind picks up and the swell is 5ft in the morning, but the cross-onshore wind kills the quality. The afternoon gets a 8ft SSW swell with a strong cross-shore wind – it’s a bit of a washing machine. This is looking more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle session.
From Thursday, 27 August through to Saturday, 29 August, the swell absolutely hammers the coast. We’re talking 12ft to 13ft SSW swell, with energy readings in the 7000 to 10000 range. The wind is offshore or cross-off, so the faces are clean, but this is way too big for this break. It’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s a serious mission. Unless you’re a charger, sit this one out.
Sunday, 30 August, we finally see the swell drop back to a friendly 6ft, glassy, and the energy is back down to 1124. The morning is excellent, and the afternoon is still very good.
Monday, 31 August, the swell drops to 4ft, but the wind is onshore and messy – not great.
Tuesday, 1 September, a small 3ft SSW swell with clean, cross-off wind. It’s not big, but it’s rideable for a beginner.
Wednesday, 2 September, a bit of a spike to 5ft, but the wind is cross-onshore and the quality is marginal.
Thursday, 3 September, is a nice surprise – 6ft SSW swell, glassy in the morning, excellent conditions.
The last few days, 4 September, drop to small, messy waves with a long 19-second period and cross-off wind. The energy is low (716), and it’s not really worth getting excited about.
So, the standout is the period from Saturday, 22 August through to Sunday, 30 August, but the absolute best is Monday, 24 August – big, clean, consistent, and glassy. For the experienced, that’s the one. The beginners should stick to the 20th to 22nd, and the 30th.
Rusty.
