The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break down La Caffrine in feet and Fahrenheit. Water temp is 76°, which is about 1° warmer than usual for this time of year – nothing wild, just a nice little warmth.
We’ve got a slow start. Thursday and Friday are pretty average. The swell is small, around 2ft to 4ft, but the wind is all over the place – cross-off, cross, cross-on – and the wave energy is just moderate (244 to 780). Not worth getting wet. The short period and chop will make it a grind. Saturday is the same story.
Then Sunday the 19th is the first real standout. Both morning and afternoon go glassy with a clean 3ft to 4ft SW groundswell, and the period jumps to 15-16 seconds. That’s long-period energy, giving proper shape and power. Wave energy is solid (550 to 593). For a beginner-friendly break, this is about as clean as it gets – no wind, easy paddling, and good shape. Crowds are possible, so get out there early.
Monday the 20th is a step up in size and quality. We’re looking at 6ft to 7ft of SSW groundswell, still glassy, with a 13-second period. Energy jumps to four digits (1085 to 1567) – a serious step up. This is excellent surf, but at 7ft it’s pushing into the zone where beginners might get a bit thumped. Experienced surfers will be grinning. Tuesday morning holds similar size and quality, still glassy, but Tuesday afternoon the wind goes cross-shore and the quality drops.
Wednesday the 22nd is another gem. Morning is glassy with 7ft SSW groundswell, 13-second period, and energy hitting 1743. That’s a proper wave. The afternoon stays clean with cross-off winds. This is a day to clear your schedule.
Thursday the 23rd starts glassy with 5ft S swell, but the afternoon gets blown out by a 12 mph cross-shore. Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th are mixed – some clean windows, some wind-affected, but the swell is moderate and the period is good.
From Sunday the 26th of July through to Tuesday the 29th, the swell gets massive. We’re talking 10ft to 15ft with energy readings over 5000 and even hitting 19161. That’s huge, and well beyond what this break can handle. The reports say it’s too big for the break, so unless you’re a big-wave charger, stay on the beach. The swell direction is SSW, which is right on the optimum, but the size is just too much.
Wednesday the 29th onwards, the swell drops back to a more manageable 7ft to 8ft, and the conditions are glassy again. Thursday the 30th is clean in the morning, and Friday the 31st of July is a ripper – morning glass, 8ft SSW groundswell with a 17-second period, and energy hitting 4298. That’s a long-period groundswell with plenty of power, but it might be a bit too straight for a beach break. For experienced surfers, it’s top shelf.
The best on offer? Sunday the 19th for the clean, beginner-friendly perfection, and Monday the 20th and Wednesday the 22nd for the bigger, more powerful stuff. The second week is promising but less certain – the big swell mid-week is a no-go, but the end of the month looks tasty.
Rusty.
