The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into a solid run of surf for La Caffrine. This spot is a consistent little performer, and the window ahead has got some real highlights.
The water is 76°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s a bit of a treat.
We start with a bit of a dud today, Sunday the 19th. Small, weak swell around 3ft from the SW, but with a cross wind and marginal conditions, it’s not worth suiting up. The energy is weak (523) – just a messy, gutless affair.
Monday the 20th is where it properly kicks off. Overnight, the swell jumps to 8ft from the SSW, and the wind goes dead calm – glassy. The energy is strong (2514). This is a big, powerful groundswell with a period of 14 seconds, meaning better shaped waves and more push. For a break like this, that’s a serious standout. It’s pushing into the expert range though, so if you’re not confident, sit this one out and watch the show.
Tuesday the 21st keeps the quality high. The swell drops a touch to 7ft from the SSW, but the wind is still glassy in the morning. Clean, powerful waves with moderate energy (1293). Another top morning.
Wednesday the 22nd is a beauty early. The swell swings a little more south, holding at 6ft. Glassy conditions, period at 13 seconds. The energy is strong (1452). The onshore breeze arrives in the afternoon, so get your session in before lunch.
Thursday the 23rd is a step down. Swell drops to 4ft, and the wind turns cross-offshore, keeping it clean but the wave size is small. Energy is moderate (818). Still a fun option for a smaller board.
Friday the 24th morning is a gem. The swell is 4ft from the SSW, but the period is a long 15 seconds. The wind is light cross-off, making for clean, lined-up waves. Energy is moderate (1269). This is a classic groundswell pulse that will reel nicely.
The weekend of the 26th and 27th gets messy. Saturday the 26th has some onshore wind and a poor outlook, and Sunday the 27th – just look away. The swell builds to 10ft, but it’s listed as too big for this break. Energy is massive (4634), but it’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddle day.
Now, for the real standout in the second week. Monday the 28th of July morning is huge again – 10ft, glassy, but again too big for this break. The afternoon settles to 8ft with glassy conditions and excellent energy (4023). This is the one for experienced surfers.
Tuesday the 29th and Wednesday the 30th hold solid 8ft to 8ft SSW swell, with clean morning conditions. Energy is well into the strong range (3095, 2479). These are powerful, punchy days.
The final standout is Friday the 31st of July. Morning session: 8ft from the SSW, period 16 seconds, clean cross-off wind. The energy is very strong (3687). This is a long-period groundswell that will be a freight train – perfect for a reef or point setup, but at a beach break, it might be a bit too straight.
The run continues into the first few days of August with solid, clean 6ft to 6ft SSW swell, fading out by Monday the 3rd to a smaller 5ft, and then a final glassy 3ft on the afternoon of the 3rd with a very long 18-second period.
Overall, the best of the best is Monday the 28th of July afternoon and Friday the 31st of July morning. Both offer big, powerful, clean SSW groundswell for experienced surfers. Get it while it’s good.
Rusty.
