Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at La Caffrine over the next couple of weeks.
We’re looking at a solid run of surf, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The water is sitting at a mild 76° right now, which is about normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real action starts Monday the 6th of July, but honestly, it’s a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a 7ft SW swell with a 13-second period, but the wind is a messy cross-shore from the SSE at 12 mph, creating a nasty cross-chop. The energy is moderate (1832), but the conditions are marginal. Afternoon gets a bit smaller at 6ft, but the wind picks up to 16 mph, and it’s a no-go.
Tuesday the 7th is where it gets interesting. The morning is still a bit messy with a 6ft S swell and cross-off winds, but the afternoon? That’s the standout. A solid 10ft S swell with a 12-second period comes in, and the wind goes clean cross-off from the SE at 16 mph. The energy is strong (2845), but this is big. Over 8ft means it’s expert territory only. Beginners, stay on the beach.
Wednesday the 8th cleans up nicely. The morning has a 7ft S swell with a light cross-off breeze, and it’s clean. The energy is moderate (1843). The afternoon drops to 8ft but from the ESE with a shorter 8-second period. It’s still clean, but the period is short, so the waves will be a bit weaker and more crumbly. Still good for experienced surfers.
Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th are pure glass. Thursday morning sees a 5ft SSE swell with glassy conditions from the WNW. The energy is weak (489), but it’s clean. Friday is even better with a 4ft SW swell that has a very long 15-second period, meaning proper groundswell energy. The energy is still moderate (660), but that long period will make for some beautifully shaped waves at this break. Saturday the 11th morning is another glassy standout with a 5ft SW swell (15-second period, energy 1048), but the afternoon turns cross-on, so get it early.
From Sunday the 12th through to Wednesday the 15th, we’ve got a consistent run of 7ft to 8ft SW and SSW swells with very long periods of 14 to 17 seconds. The energy is strong (1728–3447). The mornings are often glassy, making for excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The afterdays get a bit cross-on, but still very surfable for the skilled crew. This is a great stretch for the confident surfer.
Thursday the 16th drops off a bit, still 7ft S swell but with a light cross-on breeze. The energy is strong (3535), but the wind is not ideal. Then Friday the 17th is a beauty: 4ft S swell, 12-second period, glassy conditions all day. The energy is weak (890), but the quality will be high for a smaller board.
After that, there’s a lull. Saturday the 18th is tiny and messy, but Sunday the 19th morning sees a 7ft SSE swell return with a short 8-second period and glassy conditions. The energy is moderate (798). It’s punchy but short period. Monday the 20th morning is a solid 6ft SSW swell with a long 14-second period and glassy conditions – very good, but the afternoon gets ruined by a 12 mph cross-shore.
Finally, Tuesday the 21st morning brings a big 10ft ESE swell with a 9-second period and clean cross-off winds. The energy is strong (2249), but again, that’s expert-only size. The afternoon drops to 6ft.
The best bets: Tuesday the 7th afternoon for the big, clean swell for experts. Then, the whole stretch from Sunday the 12th to Wednesday the 15th mornings for consistent, powerful, long-period groundswell with glassy conditions. If you want a smaller, cleaner day, Friday the 17th is a gem.
Rusty.
