The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and let's talk La Caffrine.
It's a bit flat to start. Friday and Saturday are small, crummy, and blown out. Water temps are around 76°, just a touch warmer than average for this time of year, nothing crazy.
The first good news comes Sunday, July 19th. That morning, the wind goes glassy and we get a clean 3ft south-west swell with a long 16-second period. It's moderate wave energy (604), but with these conditions, it’s a super clean, easy-going session. The swell direction from the SSW is exactly what this break wants.
The big standout, the one you circle on the calendar, is Monday, July 20th. You’ve got 8ft to 8ft of SSW groundswell at 13-14 seconds. That wave energy is strong (2316-2553), and it’s glassy from dawn to dusk. This is excellent, powerful surf. But at over 8ft, it’s for experienced surfers only. The period is on the longer side for a beach, so watch for those sets to stand up a bit straight.
Tuesday the 21st is still solid with 6ft in the morning and glassy wind, but it drops off in the afternoon as the breeze turns onshore. Wednesday and Thursday (22nd and 23rd) offer clean, cross-off winds with waves in the 5ft range. Crowds can show up sometimes here, but the quality is undeniable.
Looking ahead to Sunday, July 26th, there’s a very long-period groundswell (20-21 seconds) from the SW. The morning is glassy, with strong wave energy (1323). This is the kind of swell that wraps perfectly around points, but at a beach, it might feel a bit straight and walled.
Heads up for Monday, July 27th and Tuesday, July 28th: the models are pumping out a massive swell. We’re talking 10ft to 12ft of SSW energy with 17-second periods. The wave energy is extreme (7044 to 7515). That is way too big for this spot—it’ll be a washing machine. Best left for the tow-in crew and the kiteboarders. The wind on the 28th is also strong cross-shore, so it's a messy, powerful beast.
Into August, the swell backs down to a fun 4ft to 5ft range from the south-west, with clean conditions under a stronger sea breeze. Not epic, but still surfable.
The call: Sunday the 19th is a nice, clean warm-up, but the absolute best on offer is Monday the 20th—a full day of glassy, solid, expert-level surf. That’s your session.
Rusty.
