The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
We’ve got a solid run of swell coming into La Caffrine, but the start is a bit of a dud. This Sunday is small, weak, and cross-choppy – not worth paddling out. Monday morning, though, it lights up. The wind goes glassy, and we’ve got a clean 2.5m SSW groundswell on a 14-second period. The water is warm, about 76°F, a degree or so above average for this time of year. The combined energy is strong at 2514. This is one for the experienced crew – it’s a big, clean swell. The glassy conditions are a huge plus. Monday afternoon holds the same quality.
Tuesday stays glassy, with 2.0m SSW swell and a 12-second period. The energy is still strong at 1313. The wind stays light offshore or glassy all day. Another excellent session.
Wednesday the swell holds at 2.0m, but shifts to a southerly direction at 13 seconds. The wind is cross-off and clean. Energy is still solid at 1691. Thursday drops a bit to 1.4m, but still clean. Friday sees a 1.2m SW swell with a 15-second period and cross-off breezes.
Now, the real standout comes the following week. Sunday 26 July brings a 1.7m SSW swell with a 19-second period – that’s very long period groundswell, which will juice up the shape but might make it a bit straight at the beach. Take note.
Monday 27 July is the absolute gem. Morning shows 2.5m SW swell, jumping to 3.0m in the afternoon. The energy is massive at 3857 and 4565. The morning session is the best of the whole run – light breeze, clean, 2.5m SW groundswell at 16 seconds. That’s a proper session. The afternoon is too big for this break, only for experts.
Tuesday 28 July is still huge, with 2.1m SSW swell and glassy conditions in the morning. The afternoon gets a bit of rain and cross-on wind. The morning is the go.
The run continues through the end of July and into August, with consistent 2.0m to 2.1m SSW swell, all glassy or light cross-off. Crowds are only “sometimes” an issue, so you might have it quiet if you’re early.
The first week of August sees the swell get ridiculous – 3.0m to 4.5m – and it’s too big for this break. That’s for experts only, if anyone.
The best call is Monday 27 July morning, with Monday 20 July morning a close second. Both are clean, powerful, and well-shaped.
Rusty out.
