The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at the next 16 days for our little slice of the coast. It's a bit of a slow starter, but there's some proper firepower building for those who can wait and know what they're doing.
We've got a bit of a gap to kick things off. The first few days are pretty marginal, with small, weak swell and less-than-ideal wind. Nothing to get excited about until we hit Wednesday afternoon. Then things get interesting. The water's sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 77°, which is a nice little bonus if you're paddling out.
The real standout, and I mean the one to circle on your calendar, is Saturday the 22nd of August. La Caffrine is going to be pumping. You've got a solid 6ft to 6ft swell rolling in from the SW with a good 13-14 second period, which means plenty of energy and shape. The combined swell energy is strong, around 1107 to 1637. But the best part? Both the morning and afternoon are glassy – dead calm wind. It's going to be clean, lined up, and proper fun. This one is for the experienced crowd though; the wave state is calling it excellent for experienced surfers, so leave the foamies at home.
Another real beauty is shaping up for Sunday the 30th of August and Monday the 31st of August. The Sunday afternoon glass-off is a cracker with 6ft from the SSE and clean conditions. Then Monday the 31st runs right into it with 5ft of long-period SW groundswell, a 16-second period, and glassy conditions again. The combined energy is strong, over 1400. This is another day for the crew who can handle it, but the waves are going to be sleek and powerful. That long period will have the waves peeling nicely, but at a beach break it might jack up a bit straight.
Be warned though, there are a few days here that are simply too big for this spot. Sunday the 23rd of August, Wednesday the 26th of August, and Thursday the 27th of August all see swell heights over 8ft, hitting 10ft to 13ft. That's expert-only territory at La Caffrine, and the wave comment suggests it's predicted to be too big for the break anyway. The combined energy on those days is massive – in the thousands. Unless you're on a gun and know the reef, give it a miss. It might look more interesting for kite surfing than a paddle session.
So, to wrap it up: a slow start, a big fat gap of nothing, then a clear golden window from the 22nd and again at the end of the month. Don't sleep on Saturday the 22nd of August or Monday the 31st of August – those are your best bets.
Rusty.
