The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's cast an eye over the next couple of weeks for La Caffrine and see what the ocean’s got in store for us.
It’s a slow start. The first few days look pretty marginal, with small, weak swell and not much energy to get excited about. The water’s sitting at about 77° currently, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year—nothing crazy, just a little treat.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Thursday, the 22nd of August. We’ve got a clean 6 ft swell rolling in from the SW with a 14-second period, and glassy conditions thanks to a light S wind. The energy is starting to build and this is shaping up nicely for experienced surfers. By the afternoon, it nudges up to 6 ft from the SW with 13-second periods, still glassy, and the energy jumps. This is a solid window of good, clean surf.
Things get a bit more serious over the weekend. Sunday the 24th of August is the standout here. The morning session is looking excellent: a 7 ft SSW groundswell with a very long 15-second period, and the wind is dead calm—glassy as a mirror. The combined energy is strong. This is the pick of the whole run for anyone with a bit of experience. That long period will produce some lovely, powerful lines, likely holding up well at this exposed spot, though it might get a bit straight for the beach breaks. The afternoon sees a bit of a side wind creep in, so aim for the early.
From the 25th onwards, the swell holds but the wind gets a little tricky at times, with some cross-off conditions popping up on the 26th. Wednesday the 27th of August offers another clean morning with 8 ft SSW swell and a moderate offshore breeze, but the energy is strong—it’s getting powerful. After the 28th, things get big. We’re talking 15 ft of SSW swell on the 28th and 29th, and the energy readings are massive. That’s too much for paddle surfing unless you’re a true charger; it’s more of a big-wave or kite-surfing setup at that size, especially with the cross-onshore winds forecast. The last few days of August and into September see the swell settle back down into the 3 ft to 10 ft range, but the longer-period groundswells from the south-southwest are best caught on the cleaner mornings.
So, for the best bang for your buck, pencil in Sunday the 24th of August morning for clean, glassy conditions on a solid, powerful 7 ft SW groundswell. Just be aware this spot can get crowded sometimes, so get in early.
Rusty.
